Rating: Summary: Dull and cliched. Review: For all the years I've been a reader of fantasy fiction, I've been told that I should read The Lord of the Rings, that it was an absolute classic, and so on. I tried, really, I did. I went in with high expectations, wanting to like these books.Unfortunately, I could barely make it through the first novel. I found myself having to force my way through a sea of overwrought description. Tolkien's writing style, if one can call it a style, is dull and overly wordy. His characters are flat, especially his female characters, who all just seem to be waiting by the sidelines for the men to come home. I couldn't bring myself to care about any of them; they were not -real- to me. The protagonist is a rather stereotypical "reluctant hero" with a group of strong warriors pledged to defend him. The antagonist is the ever popular -and boring- evil incarnate with no motive other than to be evil. While I -do- admire Tolkein's creation for the depth he put into the world and the construction of the languages, his story is a carbon copy of a number of famous myths and stories, most notably Wagner's Opera, The Ring of the Nibelungen. It's not nearly as original as many seem to think. It's been written better both before and since. ...I hope I've given at least a few people some food for thought. Thanks for reading.
Rating: Summary: A let Down Review: Tolkien is way over-rated. Read some Martin or Jordan instead.
Rating: Summary: The longest dream I ever had Review: Long time after closing the last book, I wouldn't wake myself up from the dream that Tolkien had woven with his amazing imagination. If you ever wondered what's the largest satisfaction a reading could bring you and how it fells, simply go for this trilogy. Many sucessful books can please you or move you but few of them has the ability to drag you into itself and rouse your desire to be part of the story and such desire can not be quenched after weeks, months and even years. I regret that I didn't have the chance to read it(or even know of it,for I'm from a non english speaking country) during my tender age, but I'm glad that I didn't miss it out finally. I can't stop fancying the scenes that how I would tell those tales to my own children(well,if i have any later) for this trilogy is such a precious that I want to share with all people are beloved by me.
Rating: Summary: Time & Money Well Spent! Review: What can I say that hasn't already been said. I purchased this box set back in mid 2001. I bought it to actually brush up before the "Fellowship". I had forgotten how exciting this book, this trilogy is. I have my husband reading them, and he hates fantasy books and movies. He is now a huge Tolkien fan. Great BuY, FAntastic ReaD.
Rating: Summary: The best series of books I've ever read!!! Review: This is definately the best series of books that I have ever read!! I HIGHLY recommend this series for the fantasy/adventure lovers. I'll leave the story up to your imagination... but I also recommend watching the movies too.
Rating: Summary: LOTR is still outstanding after all these years Review: As a youngster I had always found Tolkien to be a little on the dry side but that still did not dissuade me from reading the LOTR series multiple times. Tolkien may be dry & a bit too flowery worded for some tastes however this series still remains the best epic adult fantasy ever conceived. If you haven't read it by now then you are missing out on the creative genius of the one of the 20th century's most talented writers.
Rating: Summary: A Great Gift for Yourself and Anyone Else Review: This is one of the greatest gifts anyone has given me. A friend of my brother gave me the 4 book set about a year before the movie came out and I have been thankful ever since. I recommend you purchase this for yourself and for anyone who has yet to read it. The movies have been great but there is much more to this tale then can be captured on film (though they came very close). Parts of book II may be a bit slow but it is worth it to read at a very slow pace to ensure you get all of the character depth and Tolkien's vast symbolism. The smallest details can come back later to have a very large and meaningful impact on the story...much like a Hobbit (sorry, I had to throw that in). And please do not get turned off after reading the Hobbit. This is a great story which will seem like a child's tale. Rest assured, the remaining trilogy is an entirely different story which uses the Hobbit as a preface. As my friend told me after I finished the Hobbit, "The Hobbit is a good story, The Lord of the Rings is an epic tale."
Rating: Summary: Cause I mean really, Who Doesn't Like The Lord of the Rings? Review: This guy is nearly as high on my respect list as Shakespeare! That has got to be one of the hugest complements I have ever given! Sure, the movie is good, but the books are a Masterpiece! If you like action and adventure (and really, who doesn't) Then pick up one of these books, open the cover, and read. I don't know anyone who has read these books and not liked them. Some people find the first few chapters boring (like me!) but you just have to sit back and read it because you will not be sorry. WARNING! And do not skip any pages or you will become hopelessly and utterly confused!
Rating: Summary: THe Hobbit Review: The Hobbit is an excelent book where a hairy creature is whisked away from his comfortable hole of a home by a wizard and twelve dwalves. He comes across a ring, fights a dragon and becomes a burglar. You must read this book NOW!
