Rating: Summary: Boring Incarnate Review: I cannot believe all the hype this series gets, it is a boring, stereotypical fantasy that leaves all its wizards being REALLY old farts with long white beards, diminutive characters in more way then one (Yes, I know that this was a really bad pun)I have never disliked a fantasy other then this one, and I have read more then enough to make this claim (well over 300 books of this genre in the last 5 or so years) His Dwarfs are well, Dwarfs, his elves stray so far from the Traditional Celtic and Norse types it is pathetic. Sorry to anyone who still worships from these books; but if you need a good story Read Robert Jordan's Wheel of time, C.S. Friedman's Coldfire trilogy, and and Gene Wolffe's book of the New Sun Series. All these books have a fresh, wonderful setting that will hopefully convince you that the "Lord of the Rings" is no longer king. But don't get me wrong, I do still respect Tolkien for getting this genre of to a good start. But the simple fact is that a story this boring, (the detailed descriptions of every blade of grass being foremost in my mind) with undetailed, unhuman characters(yes, I do know that they are not really human in most cases, but they do not seem to have any flaws whatsoever until they get the Ring, and even these few flaws seem to get them out of trouble rather then into it!) Although I have tried, I just cannot get into this series and cannot believe that so many people let themselves get caught up in all the hype and become very stuck-up about it. (I will be the first to admit that at one time "The Hobbit" was my favorite book. But Tolkien seemed to lose his creativity after that book and could not get it back and that was a long time ago)
Rating: Summary: Fantastic, Breathtaking and all out great! Review: It's incredible how Tolkien set it all up, and described the people so well you almost knew them.
Rating: Summary: These set of books are the best books I've ever read. Review: One summery cannot express how wonderfully great these books are. In my opinion, JRR Tolkien is the most imaginative, most creative writer the world has ever known. In the hobbit, he takes a common, not heroic charector, and turns him into a very important charector. However,I felt that certain charectors like Gandalf and Strider were a little too perfect, but otherwise, no author and no book can compare to these set of books. If you can find the time to read all of them, I highly recommend you buy these fantastic books. You should also check out JRR Tolkien's illustrations, they are magnificent. JRR Tolkien is (was) a very talented man.
Rating: Summary: Be patient with this lengthy work. Review: I just read many of the reviews for the trilogy to my great delight. I love to hear such a wide variety of people so enthusiastic for the work! Yes, it truly is a classic among classics. I am currently re-reading the trilogy at a reduced pace. I am taking months to read it, savoring each passage. Now that I know the story and outcome I can enjoy the work for all its intricate delight. When Tolkien wrote it he obviously loved creating the world of Middle-Earth with its magical lands, socio-political movements, and marvelous characters (Tom Bombadil, Treebeard!). Tolkien's goal for writing wasn't to teach a lesson but to tell a great story. But any great story will teach many lessons for those who have the eyes to see. Be patient with the reading of this work and allow the story teach you lessons for life. It's a story that makes the heart happy and the soul strong!
Rating: Summary: These books are one of the best series I've read. Review: These books are one of the best series I've read ans keep reading. I first had this series read to me when I was the age of 4 and I still like it and I'm 14.
Rating: Summary: Lord of the Rings is the best book of its type! Review: A truely awesome story of epic proportions. I have read it many times, and each time is a pure joy. Key to the story is the struggle of the great and small, seemingly insignificant hobbits, as they struggle to save all of middle earth.
Rating: Summary: These books are cool! Review: I read the Tolkien books some time ago and I enjoyed them thoroughly. The books are very well written and I could feel myself moving with the story. I could read the trilogy over and over. .
Rating: Summary: The one book others look up to Review: As far as i'm concerned this is THE work other Fantasy writers have to measure up to. Even though the story in terms of action and plot turns is a little bit outdated; the first thing you have to remember is the year it was written. Those were different times and there were other factors and circumstances that might have influenced the author. All in all, i think the Tolkien collection is a must have for any fan of this genre.
Rating: Summary: Over rated Review: I dont want to give anyone a heart attack or something, but this trilogy isnt that great... in fact, it was rather crappy. The entire thing was more like a really long childrens book with no pictures... and i read it when i was a kid. (well, i still am, 14, but then i was 12) sorry if i offended anyone
Rating: Summary: I cannot rate these books. Review: These books deserve more than a 5. These books are so highly rated by me because of their ability to hold you in Middle Earth and make you jealous of Frodo and the others. I only wish it were possible to have a time porthole where I could just go and live in Middle Earth. That is the ideal heaven, to live in Gondor with Aragorn II as my king. Oh what a world that would be.
