Rating: Summary: The greatest novel of all time! Review: I have read a lot of period novels about the Arthurian age of ancient Britain, but this is by far the greatest novel I have EVER read, hands down!
Rating: Summary: Definitely overrated Review: I can't understand why there are so many positive reviews of this. I began reading this book at the suggestion of a friend. I anticipated stories about the powerful women behind the men of Arthurian legend but instead found it to be more a typical story of the chauvinism of the era. I found myself constantly frustrated with Igraine as she constantly doubted her own powers of "Sight" and questioned her own judgement and allowed herself to be pushed in directions she was at first unwilling to go. All right already! She was so wishy-washy as was every other female character and the men were just oafs. Thumbs down.
Rating: Summary: My favorite book of all time!!!! Great book! Review: As you can see by all the reviews, this book has impressed a great many people! This book explores the King Arthur story from a woman's point of view, specifically that of his half-sister Morgaine (AKA Morgan Le Fay). Each character is richly developed. There are the great, the wonderful, the evil, the tragic, the doomed characters ... This book is full of magic and wonder. Fantasy lovers, if you are looking for dragons, look elsewear. There is mention of one mythical dragon being slayed by one of the heroes of the story, but it is mentioned after the fact, which was just fine for me. This book has just the right blend of magic and wonder, without the incredible -- dragons, faeries and the like. There is an alternate place, called Avalon, which can only be visited with the help of magic. It is veiled from the world, but still looks much like the real world. Though such a place could qualify for some as incredible, could never really be, Ms. Bradley wrote about it so well, that you don't think it's so incredible after all, that such a place could really exist. When you finish this book, you could almost believe that it is all true, you could almost believe that all of it could have really happned. You don't have that, wow, what a great fantasy, but that could never really happen feeling. This was the first fantasy book I ever read and now I'm hooked! I have a keeper copy on my shelf and know that I'll be reading it again and again in the future. Once you get your hands on a copy, you won't part with it either!
Rating: Summary: A great read! Review: My sister recomended this book to me, and being a great fan of fantasy, I gave it a try. it was an enchanting experience. You can see that it's made for women though, but the sometimes sappy content was forgotten thanks to the suprisingly realistic characters and interesting drama. I was lost in its deep embrace for days. It made me see Gwenhwyfar in a different light too ( a disgusting woman).
Rating: Summary: Epic tale from a unique viewpoint Review: When my mother bought this book for me I looked at it somewhat in awe because of its massiveness. She said it took her about a year to read it on a casual basis but it was well worth it...I have to agree. Although I think the size of the book could intimidate the most avid of readers, the story is a riveting and refreshing look at the long lost kingdom of King Arthur and the struggle for freedom of religious belief. The most prominent factor which sets this epic aside from other tales of Camelot, however, is that it is beautifully written from the perspective of the women both in and out of Arthur's court. Giving a voice to the characters which are usually left on the backburner in many Arthurian legends, mainly from the view of Morgaine and Gwenhywver, was a wonderful twist of plot. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in historical epics.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: This is an amazing book. Most other books on Arthurian Legend focus on the males, christianity, and have you loving Gwenythvar and Lancelot and hating Morgaine. This is MUCH different because you will mostly fall in love with Morgaine if you read this book. Yes, it is long, but I feel that it is well worth it. It gives the reader a whole different prespective of Camelot and life.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Review: I have read thousands of books in my life and The Mists has remained my favorite. No other book has so drawn me into the story and made wish I could be there. In the six years since I first read Mists I have recommended it to everyone I know with no complaints. This is the perfect book for anyone who has a love for history magic or strong female charectors.
Rating: Summary: Simply Amazing! Review: The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley is a masterpiece that is just as well written as J.R.R. Tolkien's classics, i.e., Hobbit, The Lord of Rings etc. What Zimmer Bradley has been able to is to conjure up an incredible tale with in-depth characters and a storyline that is very compelling to say the least. My favorite part of the book is when Morgaine describes situations. I also found the theological fights and tribulations to be very thought worthy and intelligent. I must admit that it is very hard to capture this incredible novel within this review: Since it is filled with so many analogies and thought provoking ideas; that this review is merely scratching the surface.
Rating: Summary: Instantly absorbing... Review: What Mary Stewart started in me )my fascination with the Arthurian legend) Marion Zimmer Bradley encouraged to new heights. This book is my favorite retelling of the legend - MZB writes an involving book. Do yourself a favor, pick up this book and set aside several evenings to do nothing but read - you might try to do other things, but you'll be drawn back time and again.
Rating: Summary: A Wonderful Representation of the Arthurian Legends Review: The Mists of Avalon is by far the best Arthurian novel I have read. It presents a unique view of the story from the various points of view from the women involved in this epic. I have read the book several times and it captivates me every time I pick it up. If you have any interest in the tales of King Arthur then this book is a MUST READ!
