Rating: Summary: gripped by her words Review: The Mists of Avalon is the most amazing book I have ever had the good fortune to read. The way the author put her words on to the page had me lost in a world arthurian legend, I felt characters hopes, dreams, and fears in every page..... this book is a must for any reader, simply a delight.

Rating: Summary: An awesome version of King Arther in a female body! Review: I absolutely love this book. I would say this is one of Marion Zimmer Bradley's best book! She brings you right to the time period in what every fantasy lover wants. You will lose track of you own time. You will fall in love with Morgaine and her family. The magic with sweep you off your feet and leave you thirsty for more. Margaine learns as well as teaches you all about her life and others as a priestess. This is about as close to the Arthurian series as can get to truth. I totally recommend it!
Rating: Summary: wonderful in so many ways Review: this book is the 1st one in a long time that i can't put down. maybe since i read The Virgin Suicides, & that was months ago! i knew next to nothing about Morgan Le Fay, etc before this book, & was worried that that would hold me back, but not at all. the characters are great, they have many sides, the setting is beautiful, the writing, amazing. all the good adjectives you can think of are in this book.
Rating: Summary: A truly delicate and fine pen Review: When carefully and slowly reading this book, I got transported back centuries in time. The delicacy with which the author treats each character, each scene, each place and event makes reading this book probably one of the most superb reading experiences I have ever had. Whoever is interested in ancient history, tales or mythology will be delighted by this magnificent experience. Read it slowly, re-read it, enjoy each word, sentence and paragraph. Truly, writing at its finest.
Rating: Summary: I'd read it all over again!! Review: I read this book many years ago and would gladly read it all over again! That there is a movie being made out of this book is fantastic!! I have recently read the three other books associated with this one, and I adore the amount of detail and depth MZB gives to all of her characters. Arthurian legend, meaningful characters and lyrical romance, a beautiful combination!
Rating: Summary: ok but definatly long winded! Review: this story was ok, just ok. it was pritty dry as far as i was concerned. and it was very much a book more for girls than for guys although not dramaticaly so. it was just boreing.
Rating: Summary: I LOVED it! A Wonderful book!! Review: I love this book! The plot is fantastic, and the charectors are so real! I t's definatly one of the best books I've ever read, and I would reccomend it to anyone!
Rating: Summary: Captivating read Review: No one could deny that this is a work of masterful story-telling. The characters are some of the most well developed and well thought out that I have ever come across, and the story kept my interest to the very end, which is saying something, as it IS a large book. However, I was disappointed at the ending. None of us like to be confronted with age and failure, and it was a harsh lesson in this story. Also, the book truly is full of a battle of religions, which can be a little offensive at times (and would likely turn the sensitive away). Still, I can tell this book will be fondly remembered, in my mind, for years to come.
Rating: Summary: Pagnism versus Christianity - Chivalry, Revenge of the Gods Review: "The Mists of Avalon" was engaging, provocative, creative. The most vivid descriptions for me were of the mists of the Lake-- the ritual for calling the barge that carried the main characters across the Lake-- Vivian, Morgaine and the loving regard and descriptions of the little people. "The silent little people moored the boat..." The silent movement of the barge made me feel the mystery and tranquillity and serenity of the Lake. The contrasts in the description of the Isle of the Priests and that of Avalon were provocative as were the constant discussions by the characters-- Arthur, Vivian, Morgaine, King Author, Queen Qwenhwyfar-- about religion versus pagan rituals. Lancelet was tormented about his earnest love for both King Arthur and Queen Qwenhwyfar and Christianity versus Pagnism. Queen Qwenhwyfar-- while professing devout beliefs for Christianity and contempt for the pagan religions did not seem too troubled by her active adultery. Frankly, her character came across as very shallow, extremely intolerant, and hypocritical; although, to her credit, she protected her ladies in waiting from being ravished and from harm. I like the movie versions of her character better. She seemed mean and petty in this book. I have not seen the television movie yet and am looking forward to comparing this. King Arthur was not nearly as awesome as in the movie character of him in First Knight and Camelot. But King Arthur was very kind and gentle in this version. The concept of the round table came through as I've alawys understood the "round table" myth. Laqncelet was so tormmented.I was not disturbed by the characters struggle with paganism versus Christianity, although I have no intereste in paganism. This book is not my usual type of book to read as I have never been caught up with Greek gods and goddesses or pagan gods and goddesses. Despite this, the great respect accorded those who believed in paganism was convincingly argued by the author. I liked her treatment of this topic. I am not dashing off to do research on paganism and never will. It is just not my thing. Regarding this, I felt the persuasion and sympathy for the high regard of the author for the little people and the old religion. It was interesting that Vivian was buried at the Isle of Priests and the discussions near the end of the book by Morgaine with a Sister. The Holy Grail experience and the Search for the Holy Grail was somewhat under developed. The rush by the knights to search for the Holy Grail right after the description of the experience in the church seemed not as thought out as other parts of the book. While this should have been a very strong part of the book, it was almost comical in her treatment. I felt the son of Lancelet, Gwydion fizzled out at the end of the book after he came on strong in the middle or 4th part of the book. Finally, I liked the idea of the women being strong, in-charge, powerful creatures. The men of the world to a greater or lesser degree are still struggling with this concept. That is the amazing part--that today in modern times, men in America, Africa, the Middle Eastern countries, Asian countries, most of the world still have a difficult time accepting women as equal creatures on this earth. I believe the movie will appeal to me more than the book. However, I recommend the book to anyone who is curious and likes provocative discussions or is mad about mythology. After all, the Christian Crusades, the modern religious wars throughout the world are just as bloody awful.
