Rating: Summary: There and back again , A hobbit's tale Review: Tired of all those romance novels? Looking for a book full of adventure? Ready to leap right into the middles of a world full of magaic, danger, wizards, dwarves, elves, trolls, dragons, and little people no taller than three feet? Searching for a book where the hero is the one who appears to be unlikely or unworthy of the title hero? Then the hobbit is the perfect choice to fulfill your reading desires. It is a tale of a Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, venturing out into the great big world. He takes risks, makes new life long friendships, and grows more mature and wise on his journey. Just when you things can't get possibily any worse, they do. The book presents a life learning lesson, that life isn't worth living if you don't explore it and get out into the world. In doing so you are setting goals for yourself, you never know what to expect but in the end you are a better person for getting out there. I thought this book was great! I recommend it, if one has the patience and the understanding to read it. It is the book right before The Lord Of The Rings. It introduces some of the characters in the up coming books. Tolkien is an extraordinary author, his words put me right in the story. The images were brought to life through is his words. This book is a must. However, let me warn you that once you get started you're hooked.
Rating: Summary: An Adventure Review: The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien is about a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. Gandolf, a wizard, and thirteen dwarves ask him to accompany them on their journey to regain their mountain and treasure. A dragon named Smaug had stolen thier mouintain home and their glorions treasure. They traveled to the misty mountains and were captured by goblins and three days later they escaped. Then they journeyed to Mirkwood forest and made their way through after many adventures. From there they traveled to their last stop, Smaug's mountain. Bilbo finds the dragon sleeping and steals a cup to prove that he was there. Smaug finds the missing cup and was furious. He assumed that the town nearby, Lake Town, was guilty and flew off to take revenge. The dwarves and Bilbo take advantage of the empty mountain and go inside and explore. At Lake town the dragon is killed and the treasure is free to take. There is a war because everyone wants some. The dwarves win and Bilbo takes a share of the treasure home. I would reccomend this book for all ages. It has a beautiful and exciting plot that keeps you on your toes. It is full of suprises and the characters variety of personality keeps you interested interested.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing! Stick with the Minds Eye or BBC versions. Review: I found Mr. Inglis' voice characterizations to be poorly conceived and executed, and consequently this audiobook pales when compared to the two fully dramatized versions of The Hobbit by Minds Eye and the BBC, both beautifully realized. I grant that this is an unabridged reading, not a dramatization, but for an example of how the characterizations could have been accomplished, and for sheer listening pleasure you must compare this to the Harry Potter audio books read by Jim Dale. Jim Dale brings the characters to life in his reading with amazingly diverse voice characterizations, speech affectations, differing accents and pacing, such that the voices really suit the characters. In comparison, Mr. Inglis has a very narrow range of voice characterizations, and to my taste his characterizations were distinctly amateurish, flat and one-dimensional really, which was surprising in light of his Shakespearian credentials and disappointing after my experience with the triumph that Jim Dale brought us in the Potter series. In addition there are some rather horrible errors which should have been caught, and these now seem telling in the overall sparkless, indifferent and uninspired performance of this classic. An example of one such error: "Confusticate and bebother those dwarves!", which was flubbed by Inglis, saying "Confiscate" instead of "Confusticate". It is possible that Mr. Inglis thought to correct the text, as there is really no such word as Confusticate, nor "Eleventy-One" for that matter, but this may also underscore Mr. Inglis' ill-suited understanding of The Hobbit.
Rating: Summary: The Hobbit is awesome Review: I read Lord of the Rings first, and then read the Hobbit afterwards. I had heard of it my whole life and finally after reading it want to punch myself in the face for not reading it sooner. Tolkien rules. I am hopelessly addicted to reading his books for the rest of my life. But I don't mind...
Rating: Summary: A great story and a beautiful edition Review: If you are reading this you probably already know that a hobbit is a really fascinating epic story and the prequel of the lord of the rings. I just wanted to say that this hardback edition illustrated by Alan Lee is near brilliant. The art of the book: the inside as well as the outside are a real sight to behold, even if you are not a fanatic Tolkien fan, but just someone who likes great stories, I would still recommend this. It's just a great story in a beautiful edition. It is really worth the extra money because this a book you will treasure for a long time and for sure you are gonna read or just look in it another time too.
Rating: Summary: KES Evenstar Review: Bilbo Baggins, the hero of the book, is hurried out of his home by the wizard Gandalf. He went through many fantastic adventures with his dwarven companions who view him as nothing more than useless luggage. He slowly earns thier respect and survives a world too large for a hobbit. For he faced goblins, wargs(wolves), huge spiders, gulllom(repulsive remains of a hobbit), and the dragon smaug. On the journey he made friends and enemies and returns home wealthy.
Rating: Summary: prelude to the greatest Review: I read this book and it was great!it is really exiting because it has lots of battles, and it is high adventure. After a long chain of events the Elven Ring some how gets to Bilbo bagins (the Hobbit) on his quest. Read this book and find out what happens in this book. I would recomend this book to anyone who likes books with high adventures and battles.
Rating: Summary: The Hobbit Review: The Hobbit is the story of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit who lives in Hobbiton. He enjoys a peaceful and care-free life but his life is interrupted by a surprise visit by the wizard Gandalf. They are embarking on a journey to recover lost treasure that is guarded by the dragon Smaug, at a Lonely Mountain. On the journey, Bilbo and the dwarves encounter all sorts of villains and obstacles. They have not traveled very far when they stumble upon a group of trolls.Gandalf leads the group to a place where they can get a short rest and they pass through the country of the elves.Bilbo has outwitted a creature called Gollum, and gained a ring that makes him invisible. This is certainly helpful in battling the Giant Spiders and getting the dwarves out of the Elvenking's prison. This is about all i can say without telling the rest of it. I thought that this was a good book because I was able to get into it.
Rating: Summary: Best Book! Review: This book and the Lord of the Rings Series are the best books i have read. They are planned out and are set up in such a way that you would think it is a real world. The book even has maps and a glossary of terms and dates. Definatly something you should read!
Rating: Summary: A large adventure for a small person Review: Wow, where do I begin this review, first of let me say that JRR Tolkien is one of the best storytellers of all time. He is my favorite along with Stephen King. This book is full of surprises and twists that will kepp you turning. I don't really agree with some other reviews that it is intended for children and adults. I am 17 years old and I still love this type of story-telling, with magic and dragons. This book, in fact, is one of my favorite. Tolkien does a fantastic job of character development and describing the surroundings. I was enthralled with the ending. I really could not find anything wrong with the book, it is consistent and it kept me turning the pages. It also does a good job setting the pace to the other Lord of the Rings books. If you are ever bored and with a few hours to kill, definately pick this one up.
