Rating: Summary: Frodo Lives! Review: The sufferings of the reluctant Frodo, the stoutness of Samwise, the heroic endurance and faith of Aragorn, the fall of Beorn, the slimy humaness of Gollum-Smeagol, the old wizard Gandalf -- I have run into readers that cite only one of these characters as the lone reason they must continue to read the Lord of the Rings again and again.I was introduced to this masterpiece by a strange, elderly woman while a sick grade-school student in the early 1960s. I bless her again and again now almost four decades later for letting me into the mind of J.R.R. Tolkien. This dark, inspiring work was written in England during World War II, although Tolkien began thinking about Middle-Earth before he served in World War I. Middle-Earth truly is a masterpiece of imagination, created by a word archeologist. It's long been time for you to delve into its depths.
Rating: Summary: Pure fantasy at its best. Marvalous Review: I've read the Hobbit & Triology (3) times now and it is still pure enjoyment. The CD set is just as good. Just open your mind and let the story flow and it makes you feel like you battled the Balrog yourself, or confronted a band of Orks with an elfen blade. Just a note to AKFDLJS, open your mind for once and just enjoy it for what it is, "Pure Fantasy".
Rating: Summary: A Bonafide Masterwork Review: I was Trekker reading Trek novels for years before finally picking up LOTR at age 20. In 7 fantastic days I read through The Hobbit and LOTR, an awesome experience. The deliberate pacing of sections of Fellowship and Two Towers only served to make my heart race wildly in the Return of the King. J.R.R. Tolkien has few equals in the use of imagery save perhaps C.S. Lewis. I can see with clarity the Palantir clouded with the hands of Denethor, the coming of the fleet of Umbar flying the standard of Elendil flying to the rescue of Gondor. The regal majesty of Aragorn hiding under dour Ranger garb. The perfect beauty of Arwen. Even after dozens of readings over 15 years the picture in my mind becomes ever more clear. As for my bookshelf, Tolkien has overtaken Trek - and well he should. Trek is simplistic compared to the intricately detailed arc that Tolkien created. Frodo Lives! Indeed!
Rating: Summary: Relax and enjoy the ride... Review: If you think this is the greatest book ever written, then you need to expand your library. But it is still a literary milestone for millions of people, and a must for anyone interested in Fantasy/Fiction. I am half way through reading The Hobbitt to my 6 year old daughter (which I am enjoying as much as her) and look forward to reading TLOTR with her next. It is a thrill to share this wonderfull story with her. I Strongly recommend an illustrated version, when sharing this with children.
Rating: Summary: The King of Middle Earth Review: Tolkien is just the greatest in my opinion! "The Lord of the Rings" is also my favorite writing of his. To me it takes on much more meaning than just a "book," "fantasy novel," or anything of that sort. It is another world that is a concrete possibility in my mind. His writing style(s) of course have a great influence on this. While reading it many a time, I could not help but to become so involved in this world that it was as if I were in it myself. Night after night, staying up for hours into the morning (as I am now), reading, reading, and reading again. What an experience!!! Tolkien has put forth a wonderful world...I would much sooner classify his writings of Middle Earth, primarily "The Lord of the Rings" and the "Silmarillion," as "Theoretical" rather than "Fantasy." Indeed, many a time have I mused over the possibility in my mind that he played the role only of a translater of an ancient script, or of many. However it was that these wonderful writings came about, I am extremely grateful for the gift given us in them. Middle Earth is not a fictional place to me, rather another dimension, possibly another time and place in this dimension of reality. I will never neglect these writings.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: J.R.R. Tolkien is one of the best authors! My dad read me the book when I was little and I wouldn't let him stop! My favorite part of the story is the elvish city of Lothlorien. The way Tolkien describes them is beautiful. I rate this book ten and it should be above all others. It's much better than "The Hobbit."
Rating: Summary: The Best Fantasy ever written Review: I have read The Lord of the Rings so many times I lost count! I have totally worn out my paperback editions. I was thrilled to find the trilogy in one bound edition and can't wait until I can afford to get one of my own. I received my first copies of this trilogy for a christmas present and still keep tabs on all the loose pages that have separeated from the bindings. I would recomend this book to anyone intrested in fanatsy work. They were the first fantasy books that I read and I was Hooked! I beleive many will try to copy this work and all will fall short. For me there is only one Middle Earth and weak copies only make me angry. The only complaint I have with this work is I wish Mr. Tolkien would have given females a better role in the premier fantasy trilogy.
Rating: Summary: Legendry Review: I am ( as am sure many are ) enthralled by the Lord of The Rings. For days I could not sleep for fear I would have to put the book down - the creation of this world is so extensive and well thought out that it baffles even the concept of what fiction is to me - for I believed that every charachter lived and breathed - Gandalf surely has a temper to be feared, I shivered when I could see it begin to smoulder in his eyes and I certainly cried when I thought the Barlog had defeated him. Every charachter was fascinating - Tolkien's gift was that of life and a superior imagination - one that created a world in which no other author can contest, complete and whole. I have read this book 13 times and suspect that I will keep reading it till my eyes fail me, by which time I am sure I will have my grandchildren well enough trained to be reading it to me. Obsession you say ? Nay - just pure admiration for the great mind which has created such a work, such a masterpiece. Thoroughly recommended for all ages !!!
Rating: Summary: Tolkien was an artist who painted pictures with tiny details Review: Tolkien was so special because he created not only characters who were true to themselves, but also species who were true. They had their own languages, songs, poems, traditions, characteristics. . . in short, they were embodied of their own cultures. Keeping track of all these things, so he wouldn't be caught in inconsistency, is why Tolkien was a genius who is, so far, unmatched. I have re-read this series many times. If I were stranded on a deserted island with five books, the LofR and the Bible would make up my five. I highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: I'm Sorry! Review: I can't stand this book! These fantasy things are really getting to me! I don't see how someone could read such un-true and so unbelievebly weird stuff! Sorry if I offended you. And don't say these are the greatest books. Try reading something more true like Gone With the Wind or A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.
