Rating: Summary: Absolute Briliance Review: The Lord of the Rings is without doubt the best fantasy novel ever written. I know of no other author that comes close in detail, imagination, language. Modern novelists like Eddings and Brooks are fine but their prose is like high shool writings compared with the beauty of Tokien's language. His characterisations are superlative. How many of us wanted to be Aragorn or Frodo. He doesn't rush into the action but builds the tension bit by bit to a terrifying climax. This must be the only fantasy novel where the villain (Sauron) doesn't even make an appearance in the climax of the story. There is no sword fight etc. But it works and wonderfully too. I have read the book 5 to 6 times cover to cover over the past 15 years and it is still wonderful to read. For the audio dramatization I would highly recommend the BBC 13 hour adaptation with Ian Holm as Frodo. It is engrossing and wonderfully performed by all the actors. People who would compare Tracy Hickman to Tolkien ought to be shot. That is like comparing Sidney Sheldon to Dickens.
Rating: Summary: I have a certain affection for Tolkien but not his book. Review: But perhaps I'm missing something. Perhaps my little brain is too demanding of logic and order. If I come to a description of a waterfall, the water must fall in no other direction but down. I feel I'm missing something for a good reason. From the documentary on Tolkien, I sensed that he was an extraordinary man. Extraordinary in that he had a true grasp of that melodic beauty of England ... how it's people and landscape had co-existed for so long. This is the "melody" that plays in the background of his many stories. I feel that they memorialize the England that's now almost dead. It made sense when I heard that one could sense an undertone of sadness in the usually jovial and happy Tolkien. One of the reasons for his melancholy, apparently, was the slow but sure destruction of the English countryside--part of the fading away of that Melody of England. Perhaps those of us who didn't find beauty in Tolkien need to live a little longer.
Rating: Summary: Phenomenal book. The best ever fantasybook created. Review: I have read all the bad reviews, and I must agree that the book is not your basic fantasy novel. There is far between the battles, and it is very cinematic in its writting. But even so it's exceptionally gripping and beats all other books of the genre by miles. I have read 50 or 60 fantasy novels before this one and had heard a great deal about it. An even so what I had heard could not even compare to the gripping tale which is enclosed within those pages. When people say it probably was phenomenal in its day I totally disagree with them. This book is one in a trillion. Buy it if you have any sense.
Rating: Summary: LOVED IT Review: I'VE READ IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN BECAUSE THIS IS SUCH AN ENCHANTING AND WONDERFUL BOOK
Rating: Summary: Nothing compares Review: This story transformed forever the way I feel about reading. I first read it (after reading 'The Hobbit') about 20 years ago, and have read it eight or so times since then. Every autumn I have the urge to pick it up; like in the famous Led Zeppelin song, I can hear it calling me... This is not a book that you just read. You step out your front door, and the adventure carries you away to places that become a part of you forever. But it's not a fairy tale, in which the characters all live happily ever after, or a dungeons and dragons fantasy with little depth or imagination. This a story, in the most magnificent and perfect sense of the word, that moves you in a fundamental way and changes your expectations of what a story should be. And that's unfortunate, because like the characters in The Lord of the Rings who learn that you can never really go back home, you will learn that you can never find a story like this one again. But you can read it again, and if you're like me you will dare to step out your front door many more times, and follow the roads where they may take you.
Rating: Summary: Let it take you away Review: My Mom practically forced me to read this book when I was a kid. I didn't care to since I did not have the slightest interest in fantasy literature. Since then I read it again and again, for different reasons and in different languages. Being a classics kind of girl, I know that, from a literary point of view, there are better books out there, but no other book has ever satisfied my cravings for mythology the way this one does, nor touched me in a deeper place, nor send me into spasms of daydreaming, nor made me want to pack my stuff and head on down the road on those clear days in autumn. If there is any imagination in you at all, you'll know what I mean.
Rating: Summary: Best fantasy book ever ! Review: This is the best fantasy book I have ever read. The Lord of the Rings contains everything a good fantasy book should contain, and then some more. It's undoubtedly worth reading !
Rating: Summary: excellent rendition of a timeless story Review: As a child, my parents began buying me and my brothers Mind's Eye tapes to listen to while travelling. My absolute favorites were always the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings sets. I read the books when I was a teenager and was not disappointed in the comparison between the spoken and written versions. While, like any abridged audio version, some portions were skimmed over or lost, the story itself remains remarkably intact and accurate. The dramatic telling of this story fascinated and stirred my imagination. It is actuallly a recorded drama with characters read by various actors/actresses who do an excellent job of conveying the emotion and tone of the story. A few years ago, I bought both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings on CD and I still love to listen to them as I travel on business or pleasure. I believe that you will find this to be a great story that you can enjoy time and again with each retelling.
Rating: Summary: My favorite book ever! Review: I would have given this 99 or 100 stars (out of 100)if I could have. It is a great book and I pity anyone that does not read this great book for any reason. I have reaad also "The Sillmarillion" that is my second favorite book and "The Hobbit" my third favorite both from J.R.R. Tolkien that I recommend to anyone who likes "TLOTR". Beware though "The Sillmarillion" starts off boring and gets better to the end and "The Hobbit" starts off boring but gets better the more you read except in the middle (at Flys and spiders). Please feel free to e-mail me.
Rating: Summary: The Greatest Fantasy Novel Ever!!!! Review: I first read the Lord of the Rings in 1968. Since then, I have read the entire series at least once a year since then. No other book matches its depth and vision. This is a story that is a privilege to read. The only regret that I have is that I never had the chance to communicate to the great master, J. R. R. Tolkien, how much I really loved his work.
