Rating: Summary: Greatest Book's Ever Review: I Have not read many books in my lifetime... But I can tell you that this book is one of the greatest pieces of litureture in exitience, only a close second to the bible and ten times better than Moby Dick or The Catch In The Rye. I Recomend this book to every person.
Rating: Summary: Do not be fooled Review: Don't get me wrong. I am a Tolkien fan. I am not, however, a fan of this edition. Being in publishing myself I can spot a quality product versus an inferior one. This "Collector's Edition" is horrific. From page to page the type is either light or so dark that the print seems to blur. Leather bound? It's not worth even mentioning. Please think twice about spending the money on this one folks. Finer editions surely abound. The publisher should be ashamed for reproducing such a fine tale in such a poor package.
Rating: Summary: Silly packaging Review: LOTR is a great story. One of the greatest. These comments pertain to the Millennium edition seven volume set.LOTR was written as a single book. Due to WWII era paper shortages it was broken up and published in three volumes each a few years apart. It seems silly to break it up further. If you want a portable LOTR, buy the paperback boxed set. If its a bookshelf copy to replace your worn out paperbacks, get the single volume "red" collector edition.
Rating: Summary: The greates book and the greatest edition Review: First I want to say, that this is not a review on LotR, but on the edition, bacause everybody knows how great and greater and greatest Lord of the Rings is. I just wanted to say thank you to the editors and publishers for such an amazing work. And thank you to amazon.com - I really wasn't sure whether to buy the book ( store price 75 dollars ) but when I saw it on amazon.com I was relieved-I ordered and it cama almost immediately. I was a little bit scared-I read a review incorporating some misprints, but that is not hte case-it is just great. Thank you, I love it.
Rating: Summary: for LOR readers Review: Lord of the rings is an interesting and exciting classic. It's about a ring that was handed to this one guy, Frodo Baggins. The ring has appeared again. The ring with dark powers. Now, dark forces are trying to find the ring, and where ever the ring is, the dark forces can sence it. Frodo Baggins, leading his group of friends are trying to save the world by destroying the ring. But the only way to destroy the ring would be to cast it into the Cracks of Doom. Will they succeed? Will they be able to even get through the middle earth... alive? The Lord of the rings is a sequal to the Hobbit, so i would suggests all LOR(Lord of the Rings)readers to read the Hobbit before starting this book. It would also be helpful to make a chart of the characters since it's a long book with many characters in it. The Lord of the Rings is definately a wonderful book. It's the only book that is able to be compared with Harry Potter books, just that they are two major different kind of books. LOR is more for all ages. A word for people who haven't read the book: U're just missing out!!! Better start soon!
Rating: Summary: The LOtR Chest Killer Review: It is hard to not love the material itself...i'd probably like it if it was printed on toilet paper, but just a couple of comments. 1. This book is heavy. If you are a person who reads in bed, get some padding to put between the book and your chest. 2. I like a lot of the Lee art, but found myself wishing for some of the Howe art as well. Might have been interesting to choose best versions from the many good artists doing Tolkien art. 3. Other than the weight, this is a handy version to have. I have mowed through several paperback sets during my many, many, many readings of the material. This version seems much sturdier than any of my sets.
Rating: Summary: Don't Skip the Entire Appendix... Review: The main story (i.e. the 3 books) is about 1000 pages long. The remainder of the book is a collection of appendices. It includes some maps, family trees, description of the language used, references to time and events of Middle Earth around the period The Lord of the Rings was written in. While I found most of them not very useful, there are some sections in the Appendices which are interesting. The most poignant part of the book I actually found in the appendix. It's the story between Aragorn and Erwyn. It talks about how they met and what their love for one another made them do. Don't miss that part. This is by far the best "unabridged" version of the books I've read. It also comes in one book, not a boxed set like most other versions of this book. I think the movie released by New Line Cinemas with the same title does the book justice. A little trivia about the movie: 1) The whole film was shot in a continuous 2 year period in New Zealand. 2) The Tolkien family does not support the cinematization of this book. 3) Vigo Mortenson does most of his own stunts in the film. Go watch it!
Rating: Summary: No spoilers here Review: I'd hate to give away the story -- this review is specifically on the single volume, movie art cover, hardcover edition of LOTR. - 1008 pages of text, not including Appendices - There are INDICES! When's the last time you saw an index for a work of fiction? Very, very useful. - Appendix A: Annals of the Kings and Rulers, 45 pages - Appendix B: The Tale of Years, Chronology of the Westlands, 15 pages - Appendix C: Hobbit Family Trees - Appendix D: Shire Calendar (for hardcore fans, I guess) - Appendix E: Pronunciation guide for Elvish, etc. and some characters called Tengwar? And, other scripts as well. - Appendix F: Languages and People of the Third Age; "On Translation" -- very amusing section - Index is organized by I. Songs and Verses; II. Persons Beasts and Monsters; III. Places; IV. Things - Finally, several pages of MAPS - Dust cover: well, you can see it here at Amazon.com. The spine contains that cool logo made from combining the author's initials. It kind of looks like the Chinese character for 'book'. - The naked hardcover is black with gold lettering. Printing, font, margins, etc. are good enough. The book is fat and compact, not much longer or wider than a college dictionary. Hope this helps.
