Summary: Just as good?
Review: With the release of Peter Jackson's film, my husband and I were compelled to re-read a favorite from our adolescence. We were cautious because we heard one reviewer note that...well...the book just wasn't as good as it was when he was 14. Not true! The book is even better than we remembered. We've discovered levels of imagery and sensation that eluded us the first time. In fact, I'm loving it so much that I'm designing a course on environmental images in the trilogy for my first-year college students.

What's most fun about this edition is that all three titles are published in a single volume--as Tolkien originally intended. It's not pocket-sized, but the volume is well-bound and lovely. The illustrations are okay, but I still prefer my own mind's eye. Enjoy!

Summary: Lord of the Rings
Review: This trilogy of books is one of the finest works of fantasy or any other genre of the twentieth century, it is the yard stick that all subsequent fantasy works must measure themselves by.
Tolkien has woven a rich tapestry with these books, crafted with a nod to epic poems of the past, a definitive style and mostly with a deep love. I would recommend that anyone who has not read these books to rush out immediatly and purchase the set of them and prepare to be capivated and amazed. As for those with children who enjoy the "Harry Potter" books, I would highly suggest these books, without them I doubt J.K. Rowling would have found such rich soil to grow her fantasy novels in.

Summary: Lord of the Rings
Review: I love all the books that J.R.R. Tolkien but this has always been my favorite he has always wrote adventurous and different stories from any other fantisy tale.
A wonderful read! You won't be able to put it down until you are finished.

Summary: Great Story, Mediocre Writing
Review: Why can't the Tolkien fanatics be honest. The Lord of the Rings is a great story, but the author (despite his credentials) is a mediocre writer. His sentences run on and on, and often times become jumbled. The narrative reaches five stars during the action scenes, but then comes the laborious descriptive narrative. You know, where the writer actual has to tell the story. Yikes! It is like reading a Henry James novel without the benefit of Henry James. Nonetheless, it is a great story with superb irony. To destroy the evil, one must also destroy the good. That's a brilliant story line. Also, the Elvin language is very interesting and colorful. If you want great fantasy, this is the book. If you want to read great writing try Hemmingway, Faulkner or Fitzgerald. These are writers that knew their craft, not just their imagination. And please, stop comparing this guy to Shakespeare!!!

Summary: This edition is not worth the money!
Review: I do love 'The lord of the rings'. I red it in German first, as this is my mother-language. My cousin gave me this edition as a present. Well, it is not a very good one. The print is sometimes light and sometimes dark, it often looks like 'The neverending story'- there it is ment to be. If you want to have a super-edition, you should rather wait, untill somebody publishes one! For the German readers I hope, that some day, Artemis& Winkler will publish a thin-print-edition!

Summary: My favorite book in the world
Review: The Lord of the Rings trilogy is an awesome piece of literature. J.R.R. Tolkien was a very intelligent man. I mean, to come up with a whole other world.....that's amazing. He even made up a language for the characters in his book to speak. And talk about characters! Hobbits, Men, Orcs, Wizards, Evil Ringwraiths, a Dark Lord, Ents, Elves, Dwarves, Eagles, Heroines and Heroes, this book exceeds the imagination and genius of any other book I've read. The loyalty and friendships that are portrayed in this book are some of the most precious ever. They all must stick together for the better good, without being destroyed themselves in this raging battle between good and evil. I highly recommend this book to any bibliophile!

Summary: It's true; this version is wretched.
Review: Please listen to the other reviewers here who have said how awful this rendition is. I borrowed it from a friend because I'd just read the trilogy and was excited to hear it enacted, but I was sorely disappointed. The man reading the part of Frodo is so completely abysmal that I had to stop listening partway through disc two. I was so psyched to hear the story enacted that if Frodo had at least been passable, I would probably have listened to the whole thing. Instead, I bought the BBC version and am quite pleased with it. One caveat is that this version does include some sections that are omitted from the BBC rendition. In my opinion, if you really want to enjoy those sections, read them in the book. If you want to listen to a well-done and entertaining audio version of these books, please buy the BBC recording instead.

Summary: A great book for anyone...
Review: This is the "red book" as referred to by Bilbo in the lord of the rings. It is a collectors item and should be cherished by anyone who owns it. It is a wonderful book to have, though it is the same as the lord of the rings (3 in 1). A MUST HAVE for any Lord of the Rings fan.
