Rating: Summary: Incredible Detail Review: When I recieved this atlas as a gift last year I was ecstatic. No more rellying on torn, bent, and small front page maps any more. This is an incredibly comprehensive work. Not only is there a wonderfully clear and easy to read map on nearly every page, but also commentary on how that map relates to the text. I definetely recommend this to any true Tolkien fan. Lots of detailed building layout maps are also included.
Rating: Summary: An impressive atlas Review: If you love LoTR, you'll love this. It's a very detailed atlas with not only maps from LoTR, but the Hobbit and the Silmarillion. I recommend this one.
Rating: Summary: Indebted to the Author Review: I hardly think I could say something original in my particular review of this book. What I can say is that, by any measure, the author did Tolkien fans the greatest of favors and paid Tolkien a serious compliment by creating a wonderfully written and well-researched atlas of a detailed fantasy. I became absorbed in Middle Earth simply by reading Tolkien's words. The Atlas has succeeded in fueling my fascination with all of Tolkien's M.E. writings, and adding texture to an already rich experience for me. I gladly push this book on anyone who has read Tolkien and is hungry for more. This book is the next best thing to being there.
Rating: Summary: If you love Tolkien, ya gotta have this book! Review: A few errors but all in all a wonderful companion to Tolkien's works. These maps take you 'there'. There's a comparison chart tracing Bilbo's steps to the Lonely Mountain by way of Rivendale and then traces the Fellowship's footsteps to Rivendale and then on to Mordor. Charts showing buildings and caverns make these places come alive. I keep this book and The Guide to Middle Earth next to whatever Tolkien book I am reading or re reading! Ya just gotta have this book!
Rating: Summary: A Different Look at Middle-earth Review: Karen Wynn Fonstad's Atlas of Middle-earth is the result of many long hours of scholarly study of the various clues in Tolkien's writings about the physical makeup of Middle-earth. If you are both a Tolkien fan and a lover of histories and maps this is a wonderful resource. Amid all the wonderfully intricate speculations and detailed analysis you find in The Atlas of Middle-earth is yet more evidence of Tolkien's genius. How could anyone have produced such a detailed and true to life world as Middle-earth over a period of many years without producing contradiction after contradiction? Tolkien did it, and Fonstad's Atlas demonstrates his magnificent achievement as wonderfully as any of the Professor's works themselves. An essential part of any Tolkien lover's collection.
Rating: Summary: A highly useful resource for Tolkien Fans Review: As most printings of the Trilogy include a map, this book may seem unnecessary. In my opinion, the converse is true. The small map printed in the Trilogy is nothing but an appetizer compared this atlas. While the book was printed in only two colors, it has excellent detail. I found the maps of the battles quite useful, giving a better idea of how the battles progressed. The book also details the times covered only slightly in the books, as well as the era of the Silmarillion. In addition, this book is highly recommended as a supplement for those watching the movie. Tolkien created a universe so vast that it is easy to get lost, especially in Peter Jackson's excellent movie.
Rating: Summary: Good Guide for Good Books Review: Tolkien was a genius. He created a giant world and it is hard to keep track of everything. This atlas helps greatly and would be a good buy for anyone who has read or wants to read the Middle-Eart books.
Rating: Summary: This book is a must-have supplement for every Ringer. Review: This book has it all. Have you ever wondered exactly how deep a hobbit-hole goes, or the path Gandalf took after his fight with the Balrog? This book will show you, with maps, text, and even dotted lines showing where the characters went. It covers everything, from "The Silmarillion" to "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings". To get the most out of Professer Tolkien's books, you need to see the whole picture. This book lets you do that. J.R.R. Tolkien did not draw these, but if you compare the maps in this book to the few maps Tolkien did draw and the description he gave in his writings, you will find that the author really did her homework. It is a perfect atlas, and if you are interested enough to be looking at this page, you need it. Thanks for reading my review, I hope it helped you!
Rating: Summary: A Great Complement To the Books Review: Again, this review is addressed to LOTR fans who have wandered onto this page and are wondering whether this book is worth their hard-earned money. Karen Fonstad brought the eye of a scientist to the art of Tolkien to produce one of the must useful supplements to LOTR and especially the Silmarillion that I've ever found. Fonstad fills in many of the details of Tolkien's world, using her skills as a cartographer to make incredibly detailed maps and drawings (many taken from Tolkien's own maps and drawings that never made it into LOTR) of the locations in the books. You will now know exactly where everything in the novel is located and what it looks like. However, this book is not really that much of a complement to LOTR. Tolkein described everything in that story in fairly explicit detail. The REAL strength of this book are the maps and detailed decription of the events BEFORE the journey of the hobbits. It includes many many detailed maps of the world during the first three ages, as well as summations of the history. You will finally know where the wainriders came from, how the war of the Last Alliance was fought, where numenor was, how the War of the Jewels was fought. The section on the Lord of the Rings is actually the least interesting part of the book (which is praising with faint damnation -- the only way you could know more about the journey of Frodo is if he'd been on CNN).
Rating: Summary: THE ATLAS IS GOOD TO USE WHILE READING THE BOOK. Review: THIS ATLAS HAS MANY GOOD THINGS TO LOOK AT AND A LOT OF USEFUL INFORMATION. I HAVE LOOKED AT ALL THE MAPS AND READ SOME OF THE BOOK. IT TELLS HOW FAR THEY WENT IN ONE DAY AND ANY IMPORTANT THINGS THAT HAPPENED, ALONG WITH GREAT MAPS. AND THE BATTLE MAPS ARE WONDERFUL WITH DETAILS ABOUT HOW MANY MEN,ELVES,ORCS ECT FOR EVERY BATTLE!! IF YOU WANT A DETAILED MAP ALL ABOUT THE JOURNEY, THEN GET THIS BOOK IT IS VERY HELPFUL IN VISUALIZING THE WORLD. TheLoneRoman2002
