Rating: Summary: Tripods: Affecting more than surveyors and photographers Review: I read this book during my later elementary school days. As I would later regret, I scarcely read on my free time back then; I do not understand why I did not read more frequently, considering that those books that I did read (this and Stephen King's Eyes of the Dragon come to mind) I found delightful. Anyway... The White Mountains was probably written for a younger audience, but I recommend this for science fiction aficionados of all ages. In contrast to most pieces from the genre, the future is depicted as technologically-backwards. (This is reminiscent of Ayn Rand's Anthem. In both literary works the primitiveness relates to a lack of individualism, except that in White Mountains the population is enslaved to the tripods, instead of their "brothers.") The protagonists of this novel are children fleeing the sovereign tripods, lest they be "capped" and thereby surrender control of their minds to the huge machines. Intriguing! ~pythia~
Rating: Summary: amazing Review: I am in 4th grade and as a victom of the Tripod triology I would have to say that this book is extremly captivating . I highly recomend it!
Rating: Summary: An old favorite which I still remember after 30 years! Review: This book was one of my favorite books while I was growing up. It was my introduction to the world of science fiction, and I found myself lost in the world which the author created. The writing is superb and for parents who want to recommend books to their teenagers and pre-teens to get them away from the television, video games and computers, this is the perfect book to get them reading again. I actually came looking to see if this book was still being offered. The premise of the book is not out of date, and this is a great series for even adults who enjoy The Hobbit, Asmivov and Bradbury's books to spend an evening curled up with. Rating: Summary: a thrilling and invigerating tale Review: The White Mountains is a suspensfull tale that will keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time you read it. It is simply the kind of book that makes you never want to stop!
Rating: Summary: Good book, but a little slow Review: John Christopher is a great author, but this book can get slow at times. This story has the same characters that are in "The Pool of Fire" and "The City of Gold and Lead," but it is the first (writen) in the series. To get a better background for this book i would suggest reading "When the Tripods Came" (the prequel) first. Then "the white mountains" then "city of gold and lead" and then "pool of fire." these are all very good books when read in that order. the prequel establishes a lot for this book and it should be read first. "the white mountains" itself goes very slowly at times but it also is great action and characters. "The Dusk of Deamons" is also good but a bit creepy.
Rating: Summary: One of the Best EVER! Review: Some 20 years ago while in the boy scout program I got hooked on a little cartoon featured each week in "Boys Life". The title, "The White Mountains". I remember waiting on pins and needles until the new segment came out each month. It finally struck me to check in my local library and to my surprise there was not just one book but a series. I checked these out, read all of them that night, and to this day still vividly remember the story and characters. This is a great book, a fantastic series, and one of the most memorable reading experiences of my life. An outstanding series for both young and old. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: The White Mountains Review: I realy enjoyed reading this book. I am a really big fan of Animorphs and if you too enjoyed the books about the Animorphs, you will enjoy this book. In both, something is taking over characters' brains and a few people are trying to stop it. I can't wait to read other books that the author has written.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic science fiction! Review: "The White Mountains" is one of the best pieces of science fiction that I have ever read. It struck me as a combination of "Brave New World," "1984," and "The War of the Worlds" except it is written in an easy to understand prose which is perfect for younger readers. I think younger readers will relate to the main character, Will. He is not a perfect, hero-type personality. He can be self-centered and very selfish at times which makes him quite believable. My only complaint about this book is its cover. One of the worst covers I have ever seen for any book. It shows three very modern looking boys, with their 90's haircuts and clothing, which is odd considering the novel is set in a primitive society in the 21st century.
Rating: Summary: Awesome Review: I love this book! I find it very interesting, especially for a school reading assingment. The book will go very fast, and will be your favorite book in no time!
