Rating: Summary: What can I learn from this book? Review: My concern about this book is not about the way it is written (even if it is not so accurate and closes some situations in a rather silly way), but about the meaning of the book itself. Three of the charachters are suicide, and their choice is well seen by the author. The message is: suicide is a privilege of the Great (only the masters of songs are allowed to commit suicide, as RRUK says). This is not a good message according to me. There are some other views I don't share with the author, like his attitude towards sexuality. On the whole my rate is three stars becouse it evokes powerful emotions, but almost everithing said in the book about emotions is not true ...... according to me!
Rating: Summary: One of the best books every Review: This was one of the best & most emotionally powerful books I've ever read. The story of Ansset, from his stolen childhood to emperor of mankind reaches out and grabs you. I cried when I finshed reading it.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful!!!!!!!!!!! Review: this is a book about a young child who is put in the middle of many disasters. It is written wonderfully. The emotions are great, they make up the story. the charecters are all very likeable. It is a story about a child who has an amazing gift to interprut other peoples emotions better then they do. he is also the most talented singer ever. he is sent to the emporer of mankind. The plot twists an dturns from there making it unpredivtable with great sences. PICK UP THE BOOK AND READ IT.
Rating: Summary: AMAZING!! Review: This is a great book about a child who is kidnapped and sold to The Songhouse. The songhouse is a place where songs are the only importent things, and you spend your whole life learning to sing. At the age of around 11 you are sent off to sing for someone who pays for it. Allmost all are singers, but every 5 years or so there's a songbird. Someone who has an amazing voice. the child is the best singer the Songhouse has ever had. He is sent to the emporer of the galaxy, who is kind to him. Then, though, the child gets caught up in a palace plot and is mentely wounded. the emporer dies and a new one comes. He puts him in the job of the maneger of earth. he does well, but another nasty thing happens, I wont tell you what. this book is wonderful. I'd read it many times just for the ideas, but the emotion tops that. The emotion is toped by the charecters, who are in turn, topped by the style. a must read for anyone.
Rating: Summary: Card Puts the Reader in the story Review: OSC once again used his magnificent talent of creating a central character who you feel you know like a good friend. Songmaster was pure brilliance. He puts you in the book and the only dissapointing feature to an OSC book is when there isn't a sequel.
Rating: Summary: The Best of Orson Scott Card Review: I have read almost every Orson Scott Card book, and I find Songmaster to be the best. It is the most touching, and interesting book he has ever written. I think every OSC fan should make a point of reading this book at least once. I have never read a book more than once, but so far I have read this book four times.
Rating: Summary: This is one of his good ones!!! Review: I had been read and bought all of Orson Scott Card's books. This is the scecond favour (after Ender's Game) book of his. I know that he had written some really really bad books but this is a must read. Orson Scott Card have the abilities to make you see how LOVE can lead to hate and mistrust through misunderstanding. In one chapter, I wanted to scream at the charactor because he had miss read the other's action. In another, I cried because of the horrible mistake the one character is making. In this book you go through the cycles of growth and wonders of a child to his death. How the choices he made affect the people around him and his life down the road.
Rating: Summary: A Tale That Will Touch Your Soul Review: Orson Scott Card is one of those rare authors that has consistently turned out top notch stories throughout his career. And Songmaster ranks right up there with his best. A Card trademark is his utilization of a young child (in this case 'Ansset') as the central character. Reminiscent of the King Saul and young boy David story of the Old Testament, Card paints a beautiful picture of how the innocence and purity of youth can soothe the savage beast. But there is a price to pay...and again, Card's portrayal of this cost unfolds as a very moving tragedy. Once you've read this book, you'll still be thinking about it for days to come
Rating: Summary: Excellent. An early work, but one of Card's best. Review: Have you noticed there are two Orson Scott Cards? One writes brilliant, complex, character-driven novels and short stories ("Postwatch", "Ender's Game", "Hart's Hope", etc.), but his evil twin brother churns out the most dreadful stuff ("Memory of Earth" or whatever they were called, and the "Alvin Maker" series). "Songmaster" was definitely written by the former. Fascinating characters, excellent pacing of the storytelling, and crisp writing...there were several scenes so powerful and unexpected, I had to read them over several times. Card has a tendency in his later work to get a little too complex (e.g. "Xenocide"), but this is an early work. A must read for literary SF fans
Rating: Summary: A wonderful replay of the King David and Saul bible story Review: This novel retells the story of King David, as a lowly singer who ultimately achieves great power. The story is fast paced, the characterization is fairly good, and world created is entertaining and interesting
