Rating: Summary: Important point in book not in film. Review: To be honest I liked the book better than the movie (but isn't that always the case?). The thing that always bothered me about the movie was that an important point made in the book was never brought in to the screenplay of the film; and it could have been, without much trouble. The important point I'm talking about is the fact that it is the future and there almost no "real" animals left to have as pets. Everyone has electric sheep or dogs or cats, etc. It is very prestigeous (in the book) to own a "real" animal. Decker figures at $1000 per killed android, he could make the $5000 necessary to acquire the pet goat he wanted. Also, the goat is pivotal late in the book when Rachel (replican) gets mad at Decker for killing her replican friends, and goes to his apartment and throws the goat off the roof to its death (to get even with Decker). This point was important to me and I was amazed they didn't mention it in the film... I think it would have made the "morality" message a little more substantial if they had. Read this book
Rating: Summary: Dick's "Do Androids..." Review: Philip K. Dick believes his scrawl, and it definitely comes across to the reader. A very believeable tale that is written with tremendous conviction. "Do Androids..." is one of the best Sci-Fi books ever written -- just behind Frank Herbert's DUNE.
Rating: Summary: Truly great science fiction Review: I read this book after seeing the movie. This book has what the movie lacks: a plot. It's extremely clever, profound, entertaining and insightful with the wonderful sense of twisted irony that Dick imbued in all his work. I highly recommend it. It's not the action movie Hollywood turned it into. This is a book with brains.
Rating: Summary: Dick's Personal Universe Review: First I saw the film; then I bought the PC Game, the Soundtrack and, finally, the Book. In "Do androids dream of electric sheep?", Phillip Dick managed to create a world of his own, a universe that is, in a way, wonderful and fantastic. Sometimes it is good to feel that things can still get worse, and that we can't take anything for granted. Afterall, the best things in life, like friends, like the air we breathe ou like life itself, are the simple things.
Rating: Summary: Many interesting themes Review: I think the book " Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" is great and make you think how the future could be. It is interesting to think about a world in a few years more where almost all living things are extinct and how has changed the social and emotional mentality of people like the book shows. For me it is almost impossible to imagine that people being classified because of their intelligence, or attach importance to animals just to be not criticise by others or appear to be an antisocial when nowadays always less people do care about them. It is also interesting to think about human androids which think by themselves and may be have feelings. And that they are used to attract people to move on Mars because each family to move on will get one. Also the thing with the mood organ or the empathy box is interesting because of the fact that people have to use some kind of mashine to feel better or feel like doing something, or to belief in something like mercerism. To my mind the book is pretty good written, you can analyse the characters or the different situations and create your own opinion or perspective. It also give you a lot to think about.
Rating: Summary: The best book I ever read Review: An interesting and personal opinion about the book " Do Androids Dream of Electric sheep"The science fiction novel " Do androids Dream of Electric Sheep", written by Philipp Dick, is a drama of a bounty hunter named Rick Deckard, who gets involved in a strange mission. Afterwords he is considered a hero, but he is not happy at all, he is unsatisfied. This novel was the first one that I really liked, I mean in English, I got so involved in the drama that I just read and read. This book was written in the early sixties and everything seemed so possible.- Philipp had a really good sense of seing the future, because everything could be a real story in the next 20 to 30 years. It also reveals a controvertial theme. That is the religion. The book is split in two different ways. One against and the other is supporting the so called "mercerism". I would recommend this book to everyone. It is like a typical hollywood movie but with more details....but....you should read it yourself!
Rating: Summary: Atmospheric, Dark, Inventive Review: Now I know why most people who like the book also like the movie or vice versa. It works because both are original in their own way. If Ridley Scott had made his movie 1 to 1 from the book, he would have bored us to death. The book thrives almost entirely on dialogue (internal and external) and on description of minutae (just think of the scene with Isidore, the Andys and the Spider!). PKD is such a great writer, he doesn't need movement to captivate the reader, he simply creates his dark and surreal world, populated with reluctant protagonists driven by powers beyond their control.
Rating: Summary: Shorter than the movie and different but good. Review: This is a pleasant and amazing book, easy and quick to read, quite original. Do not expect to find Harrison Ford, he is not there. I also liked the psychology of the various characters.
Rating: Summary: Maybe you're an android. Review: American society in the 90s is at a point which many people would fail an empathy test. This concept alone makes reading this book a lot of fun. To think that one might have to pass an empathy test (much like a lie detector test) to remain among the living is scary. Would the police administer the test in our society as they do in this book? Spine chilling!
Rating: Summary: A long time coming... Review: I'm reading this book currently and am almost done with it. I bought the book back in '88 because I'm a Harrison Ford freak. 11 yrs. later I'm just now getting to it. What an idiot I am! This book is pretty good. The only thing alike with the movie is certain names of characters and the detective vs. replicants theme. The book has its own delights though. Consider when this book was wrote (1968) and the elements are unique. Post holocaust planet, replicated humans, humans whose biggest thrill is to own an animal, etc. Pretty good. Think I'll watch the movie again when I'm done with the book.
