Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: Do not view these as five individual books, but as five pieces of a whole saga. To read only one would be to cheat one's self of seeing an entire picture. The epic begins with an child with no memory being raised by a mysterious woman in a small village. Both of them are regarded as local oddities and driven to live in a convent. The boy is known as Emrys, but never feels that that is his true name. As he matures, he develops gifts and wonderous powers, along with an increasing need to know who he is. Eventually, he goes upon a quest in search of his heritage, one that will lead him to the lands his mother's stories spoke of, the Hidden World outside of time and this life. He finds himself in the midst of a battle between warring demigods, and finds a new name for his own, Merlin. As Merlin journeys through the five books, he makes new friends and bitter enemies. This is a world filled with dragons, witches, goblins, and lost treasures. Secrets that are as powerful and painful as a two edged blade are discovered. Otherworlds are crossed, time itself bends to give the boy a glimpse of his own destiny, and choices musst be made that will affect far more than just Merlin. ***** Elements of other classics are hinted at, but applied in new ways and familiarity only serves to endear. This is a grand saga without the weightiness of other epics. Rather, it is easy to read and charming. This Merlin can stand alongside Tolkien's hobbits or Harry Potter proudly. ***** Reviewed by Amanda Killgore.
Rating: Summary: Merlin makes a Great book Review: The Seven songs of Merlin is a pheonominal book written by T.A. Barron. The book tells of Merlin bringing his mother to the island of Fincayra but he has to pay a terrible price. Now he must learn the Seven Songs of Wizardry and master them before it is too late!
Rating: Summary: A younger Merlin Review: This magnificent story is after the Lost Years of Merlin. It all begins when there is a council on who should own the treasures of Fincayra. Surprising even himself, 13-year old Merlin obtains the Flowering Harp, an instrument that brings forth the spring anywhere it is played. With the treasure, Merlin accepts a mission to rekindle the life in the Dark Hills, before the spirit Rhita Gawr could ever come back. After a breif visit with his friends though, Merlin abandons his quest to bring his mother to Fincayra. When he does so, an illness strikes at her, one sent from Rhita Gawr himself. Now, acompanied by two friends, Merlin must master the Seven Songs of Wisedom in order to save his mother. If he does manage to master all seven songs though, he still has to find the Otherworld Well and travel to the Otherworld to retrive the cure from the great spirit Dagda. All this must be done within one month or else his mother will die and adding to his problems, an Ogre guards the Otherworld Well, an Ogre who managed to defeat Merlin's grandfather the greatest wizard known so far. I found this book with no fault except that it all seems a bit too immense a first.

Rating: Summary: The Wizard's Songs Review: The Wizard's Songs By: T.A. Barron This book the "The Seven Songs of Merlin" is the sequel to the first book, "The Lost Years of Merlin". This book is about a boy, 13 years old, named Merlin and his quest to save his mother. He needs to find the seven wizard's songs before he can go up against Balor, the guard of the door to the Otherworld. He has to find the songs in this order, starting with, Changing, Binding, Protecting, Naming, Leaping, Eliminating, and Seeing. After he finds those then he will have to defeat Balor and go to the Otherworld where Dagda will give Merlin the elixir to save his mother. First he goes to where the treelings used the live, and he finds out that Changing is when all living things, have the potential to change. Next, he goes to the Lake of Face where he finds out that Binding is that the strongest bonds are of the heart. Third, he goes to the tunnels where the dwarves live, where he finds out that Protecting is when something is to be set free. Fourth, he goes to Slantos where he finds out that Naming is, for a true name holds true power. Fifth, he goes to Varigal where he finds out that Leaping is that everything is connected to everything else. Sixth, he goes to the sleeping dragon's lair where he finds out that Eliminating is that everything is precious somehow. Now, all Merlin had to do was go to the Forgotten Island to get the Seventh song, Seeing, but he thought that he wouldn't have much time because he only had one lunar month to begin with and he was on his last day so he decided to go to where Balor was, with Rhia and Bumblewy, his friends that were with him during the whole trek. When he got to the great gorge where Balor was, he told his friends to stay behind. When he went to the gorge he saw Balor and Merlin know not the look into Balor's one eye because that would kill him instantly. Before Merlin knew it he and Balor were fighting, swords clashing. Then Merlin tripped over a rock and Balor was about to bring down his sword over Merlin but Rhia jumped out of nowhere and threw herself at the ogre. Balor got mad and got her from her grasp and threw her at the rocks. Then, Balor picked up Merlin by the neck and..........................If you want to know what happens next, you should read the book. I thought the book was GREAT! The first book was also good too but, the second one is better. The second one was better because it had more action in it and also Merlin was a bit more experienced with his magic, which made it more interesting. Any fiction or fantasy book lover should read this book.
Rating: Summary: The Best of the Lost Years of Merlin Series! Review: After reading the entire Lost Years of Merlin series cover-to-cover in less than a week, I was absolutely enchanted with them all. However, one stood out to me, and that was The Seven Songs of Merlin. Like a typical race-against-the-clock book, but with a little twist; the main character in this book is young Merlin, the greatest wizard of all time. As he hurries to find the soul of seven songs that were written by Tuatha himself, time is running out, for his mother, Rhia, and also himself. After swallowing the Dark Shadow, Merlin's mother is battling death and has one month to live. The only thing that can cure young hawk's beloved Elen of the Sapphire Eyes is the Elixer of Dagda, the blood of the great spirit himself. All over the island of Fincayra he searches, finding the magic within the songs and also himself. A great read for nearly any age, The Seven Songs of Merlin is the 3rd book in this enchanting and wonderful series for young adults by T.A. Barron.
Rating: Summary: The seven songs of wizardry Review: In this wonderful sequel to the lost years of Merlin, he must race to master the soul of each of the seven songs before time runs out. If he can master all of the songs souls, he must still face the Cyclops, Baylor. As Merlin and his friend Rhia race to find and master the soul of each song, they meet up with all of their old friends and some old enemies. It has been prophesized that only a child of human blood, like Merlin himself, can defeat Baylor, but as his grandfather, the great wizard Tuatha said, "The truth has many faces".
Rating: Summary: Entrancing and suspenseful Review: After the Great Council selects Merlin to carry the flowering harp to restore life and nature to the lands of Fincayra, Merlin decides to bring his mother to Fincayra, as well. The evil Rita Gawr sends down a curse that reaches Merlin's mother instead of Merlin. To save her, Merlin must master the souls of the Seven Songs of wizardry. He must then enter the Otherworld Well, which is guarded by an ogre with a single eye, an orb that brings death to all those who look into it. The Seven Songs of Merlin was the March selection for the local library's teen book club, and I neglected it until just days before our meeting, although after I reached page ten, I was hooked. So far, T.A. Barron's Merlin series is entrancing and suspenseful. ~ JFS
