Rating: Summary: Awsome Book! Review: Ms. McKinley's version of Beauty and the Beast was the best one I ever read(or heard). It far surpasses the Disney version and the classic version! I have always loved fairy tails, and I also love Ms. McKinleys books. The Blue Sword, Hero and the Crown, A Knot in the Grain, there all wonderful books! Beauty tells the same story of the original Beauty and the Beast, but it has a few flicks that only Ms. McKinley could add. In this version Beauty's real name is Honour and she does not believe herself to be beautiful despite her nickname. She has two loving sisters ~ Hope and Grace, and a loving father. I like the imaginary servents in this book more that the servents in other books ~ talking clocks and such. Also I feel the reader really gets a look at Beauty ~ in fact she seems just like me ~ she always has her nose in a book! The Beast also seems more real in this book and more alive. All in all I think this is a brillent book and sould have gotten an award or something! If you love Beauty and the Beast; love fairy tales; or just love reading this is a great book to add to your shopping list!
Rating: Summary: my favorite book of all time Review: Robyn McKinley's retelling of Beauty and the Beast is one of the best books a girl can read. I read it the first time when I was 10; I'm 18 now, and it's still my favorite book. (In fact, I mentioned it in my college application essay.) This book shows that the world is a beautiful place full of hope and joy, even if it is not sunny every day.
Rating: Summary: Enchanting Retelling Review: I really enjoyed this retelling of the Beauty and the Beast. I loved the change of Beautys' appearance to ordinary and more emphasis on her intelligence. I found the story very enchanting. You are able to lose yourself in this fairy tale and become completely engrossed in Beautys' world. The in-depth backround of Beauty was nice and also more details about the Beast. Overall, I recommend this wonderful story for all ages.
Rating: Summary: I really like fairy tales, so this book was great! Review: This book was very good. All of the descriptions used in the book made it so realistic. Beauty was really beautiful, but so unself-aware that she couldn't see her own inner and outer beauty. I thought it was funny how in this version the beast didn't have any mirrors, but in other versions he had at least one. Also this version made the sisters sound really loving and nice. In lots of other versions the sisters come off spoiled. This was such a great story that I am going to read other books by Robin McKinley.
Rating: Summary: I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Review: It was filled with lots of descriptions to help the reader visualize the settings. The author included foreshadowing in Beauty's interest in the portrait of the young prince. I did, however, get disinterested in the novel's beginning because of the long amount of time that it took to get to the point of the plot. Over all this was an entertaining book that kept me wondering what would happen next.
Rating: Summary: THE best book-i recommend it to EVERYONE!! Review: I read this book a little while ago, and i absolutely <3 loved it!!!! Robin Mckinley tells or should i say, retells this story sooo well. i recommended it to all of my friends and they all loved it...fullproof for almost anyone!!!
Rating: Summary: Lovely little story Review: This is one of the most gentle, loving, and subtle stories I have ever read, and takes the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale to the highest heights. Well-written, with a truly wonderful heroine and a fabulous beast, I read this book in grade school and, as a freshman in college, still pick it back up from the shelf. The writing is very gentle and subtle, and all of the characters are sweet and kind (except for the cranky wizard, but he never actually makes an appearance); in fact, the characters are SO good and sweet they're almost parodies, and at times I feel restless and stifled by the dreamy sweetness of the novel. The whole novel is practically spun out of sugar, which can be irritating to readers who like a little more... oomph? However, the take on the fairy tale is wonderful, the twists to the tale make it a classic, the two main characters are great, and the themes and views and personalities are complex and subtle. Great read for when you're in the mood for a little light confection!
Rating: Summary: a wonderfull retelling... Review: ...to a classic fairy tale. Robin McKinley is my favorite author of all time; and probably always will be. I can relate to almost every thing that she writes. She certainly does paint a very vivid picture w/ words. and her characters seem so real they could almost jump out of the book! Beauty is not my fav. book of hers, but anything she writes is fabulous! If you like McKinley's writeing I would definetly recommend The Hero And The Crown, or Deer Skin... two of my favs!
Rating: Summary: Vivid, Fantastical Scenes Review: "Beauty" is a spectacular fantasy. Though it includes little suspense or action, it is a very fulfilling read. The clearness of the pictures McKinley paints is unreal; I have a complete picture of what all the characters and settings look like. This is a romance, but it is tasteful. Beauty is a lovable character. This book combines humor with drama and magic, a truly magic mix of styles.
Rating: Summary: If you want this real story this is it Review: I have been an elementary teacher for many years and am always looking for something to read aloud to my students. This book grabbed the students and took them along for a wonderful ride. They are captivated by the idea that someone can find a place, after not fitting in. This story has all of the imagination that one would wish for. There are no villians,it is simply a story about a family fallen on hard times with the moral fortitude to do what is right and to make it when the odds are against them. I love this story. My students love this story. It is a winner all of the way around
