Summary: 3 1/2 stars actually - A good Star Wars Novel for a change
Review: Probably the best written Star Wars Novel (Outside of the Origonals) since "Shadows of The Empire." I have been so dissapointed with the Star Wars books that I almost didn't pick this one up. I was pleasantly surprised and highly recommend it. Skimming through many of the reviews, I've noticed a lot of comments on character development - either it was good or there wasn't enough. In my opinion this book picks up where the NOVEL "Phantom Menace" by Terry Brooks left off. The movie didn't capture the characters'developments the way the book did and I suggest that you read that book if you really want a better look at Anakin and Obi Wan. Greg Bear expands on that development in "Rogue Planet" as we witness both Master and Apprentice maturing three years after the events of PM.

I didn't go higher than 3 1/2 stars because the book started to drag on and on. The cover claimed to have a lot of action - which it really didn't - although the first couple of chapters were pretty intense (can't wait to see that video game when it comes out).

All-in-all I liked it - it was good to see some real sci-fi within the Star Wars genre for a change too.

By-the-way could somebody email me concerning the "New Jedi Order" series. Should I even bother reading those - or would it be a waste of my time.

Summary: The characters were too complex in description and boring
Review: I tried to keep up with the book but with aliens offering their children to be eaten and the descriptions of the aliens were so bizarre...this author should stick to Star Trek. I don't think Qui-gon and Obi-wan's relationship was portrayed right either because it seems like these two were very distant in life after reading this book. I wish Jude Watson wrote this book instead

Review: this book is good ill give you that but has this author read the jedi apprentice books and or the episode I novel! this just isnt Obi-Wan at all hes so dull in this book there is no adventurous spirit at all plus hes so focused in on Anikin that you barely get any of his feelings on anything else! i was dissapointed in that one aspect everything and everyone else was wounderfully portrayed and Anikin was unbelievebly well done and the story was great but lets put some UMPH! into the Obi-Wan charicter

ps im only 13 and im dislexic so im sorry for and misspellings or type-os

Summary: What a Waste of Time!
Review: I was really looking forward to this book, and thought it would be an interesting addition to the new Star Wars saga. Boy, was I wrong.

The characters were barely recognizable to me. Obi-Wan was treated as though he were an idiot who was just along for the ride, and Anakin as a kid, who after 3 years of training, has about as much knowledge of the Force as he did in the Phantom Menace. The so-called teacher/student relationship between them was pretty much limited to Obi-Wan constantly saying "Anakin, settle down and pay attention." Needless to say I was not overwhelmed.

The "villians" were weak and pointless, and I felt they detracted from the story rather than helped it. The Raith Sienar character was a moron who, for being a so-called "genius", could have been outsmarted by a chimp.

The story had no plot, and spent entirely about half the time trying to discuss the building of a ship and describing the planet. The ending was rushed, and overall left me wondering how this book even got published.

Don't even bother wasting your time on this clunker.

Summary: A Pitiful Effort at Best - Bear Let Us Down
Review: A plodding, lackluster effort that does little or nothing to develop the characters of Anakin or Obi-Wan. Sheds virtually no light whatsoever on the training methods of the Jedi or on the conflict building up in Anakin that will eventually cause him to turn to the Dark Side. A complete waste of paper and ink! Avoid this like the plague!

Summary: I've got mixed emotions...
Review: This review is going to be a little complicated. Bear with me. The author did a good job on the writing of the book, but the storyline sucks. To his credit, he didn't have much choice. The post Episode 1 universe is going to have to be severely limited until we know just what George Lucas wants to retain for the movies. Greg Bear, the author, had to find a storyline that was FAR outside the Episode One (and two and three) realm. He did, but it just wasn't as good as it could have been.

I have to say, however, that it should not have been written, in my opinion. After the original trilogy, noone was permitted to write books in the Star Wars universe until Timothy Zahn was permitted to. I think a similar "ban" should be in place on the new series until it is better defined. Read the book, I think you'll understand.

Summary: Worst SW Book ever
Review: I am a big star wars fan and let me tell you if you like star wars you will hate this book. This author wrote the most boring book I have ever read. He needs to stick to Star Trek because he can't handle Star Wars. It's too late for me but save yourself and don't buy this book.

Summary: Right up there with Vision of the Future!
Review: I just finished the book, and it was wonderful! To those of you who disagree, let's get one thing straight: this book wasnt intended to outline a huge adventure and turning point in the star wars timeline--that's what episode 2 is for--it was written to further character personalities and relationships. And further this it did beautifully!

First, I really liked that we see the Jedi Masters, Mace especially, as people.

I enjoyed very much the look at Obi-Wan and Anakin's relationship as master/apprentice and friend/friend alike. I also loved the personal struggles that we see each one go through--it shows they're very alive and very real, such as Obi-Wan's love for Anakin and his lonliness for Qui-gon, and Anakin's battle with himself and the voice he hears and the dreams he dreams. It's also interesting to observe the great power that he cannot yet control.

The appearance of Tarkin was very interesting as well. It is nice to see him as a young man, but he is little changed from when we see him in A New Hope. I thought it ironic that he makes the same mistake of underestimating his enemy, only this time it did not lead him to death. I thought it was a little confusing in the book when it says he came up with the initial idea for the death star, but if you remember, so did the scientists in the maw installation.

This book also does some major foreshadowing and linking. It hints, or more like shouts, that the world of Zonama Sekot has been attacked by the Yuuzhan Vong. From this, and the second Dark Tide novel, we gather that the Vong have been planning to attack for decades...I wonder what would have happened if they had striked the Old Republic, or the Empire... And speaking of the Empire, Tarkin constantly hints that a great change in power and ways of the government are about to take place in the future. He also hints at what we know as the Empire's ways, telling Sienar that humans are the race of the future and so on.

In my opinion, the book also links Anakin Skywalker with his grandson, Anakin Solo. Notice how they both are incredibly strong in the Force, have a knack for dealing with machines, and want adventure and excitement.

Overall, this was a wonderful book that bridged the gap between the first two episodes of the Star Wars prequels perfectly, and provides exactly what Episode 1 lacked the most--character developement.

Summary: I expected better
Review: I had a hard time with this book. I wanted to like it, but it kept letting me down. I found Anakin to be as annoying in this book as Jake Lloyd was in the movie. Obi-Wan was a weak character. He seemed to be too unsure and amaturish. I thought that Sonama Sekot had some interesting qualities that were wasted. The shipbuilding part seems to go on and on and on. The action rises, finally, to an uninspired "battle." The book set itself up as a mystery, to find out what happened to Vergere, and didn't even utilize it. In fact, it is as if Obi-Wan and Anakin went on vacation. Maybe that is what this book should have been called, "Jedi Vacation." The solution to the Veregre "mystery" seems to be tacked on and is completely lackluster. Finally the ending is a complete let-down. It's not cliffhanger-ish or anything, the book just ends.

Now to the good points. The Blood Carver character was very interesting. I also liked Raith and the few times Tarkin was with him. The set-up to the story is great, and the book is good... until they arrive at the planet.

Three stars is about as low as I go. I did enjoy some of this novel, and fortunately it's not very long. It's worth reading if you need a new star wars fix, but you might just get the paperback(when it becomes available).

Summary: Good Book, Bad Star Wars
Review: Greg Bear is an excellent author, and I have enjoyed several of his books. On the whole, this is a good novel, but Star Wars it is not. Star Wars movies and books are supposed to be action packed and exciting Space Opera, not hard sci-fi. This one, while interesting, is neither exciting nor action packed. It hammers plot developments into your head without the proper action framework to keep you interested. While I am sick to death of every Star Wars novel involving some super weapon or new menace to the Republic, I was disappointed with this effort at doing something different.
