Rating: Summary: This is not a sequel to Rendezvous with Rama Review: In the introduction, Mr. Clarke warns that he never intended a sequel to Rendezvous with Rama. This warning should be heeded. Rendezvous was pure science fiction with a steady pace that could be read in one sitting. While this sort of story is certainly fun to read, a sustainable series must have more depth. Rama II is the first book in a new series that happens to take place in the same fantasy universe as Rendezvous with Rama. Rama II is about people and politics, ambition and integrity. It is vivid and consistent, but leaves enough mysteries unsolved to fire the imagination. Do not sit down with this expecting only a quick read and an evening's entertainment. You will be thinking about Rama long after the series is closed.
Rating: Summary: Keep the science in science fiction Review: This book took everything that was good about the Rendezvous with Rama and clubbed it to death. It was as if someone had said "science is boring, let's put some soap operatic garbage in so that it has more mass appeal". You might like this book if you enjoy reading about sordid personal details, but otherwise skip it.
Rating: Summary: ehhhhh. Review: I must admit, Rendevouz with Rama blew me away. It got me so hooked i went out and bought all of them. I've just finished Rama II to my disappointment. I can understand having some character background and a villain here and there. But Gentry Lee just over did it. What happend to the science fiction? Gentry...take the drama out of Rama and stick to what made it great. Solid science fiction. Something to stimulate the imagination and minds of all us sci-fi lovers.
Rating: Summary: Good, but not the best. Review: If you loved the first one, read this one. But skip the other two. They killed off the good Captain. WHY? Francesca Sabatini is the most repulsive character in anything I have ever seen or read. WHY? The spaceship is called the Newton. WHY? Shouldn't it be called the Endeavour? (Beginning to see a pattern?) Sex, sex, sex. WHY? VIOLENCE, VIOLENCE, VIOLENCE, VIOLENCE. WHY? (If you don't see a pattern, you are quite less intelligent than you should be.) The basic thing, I guess, is they did too many stupid pointless things. Other than that, a good read
Rating: Summary: Why did Clarke have to meet Gentry Lee? Review: I could tell who wrote what in the book. Clarke was the Science Fiction (the good stuff) and Lee wrote the smut. The book would have been a 10 had only Clarke written it!
I think that Gentry Lee has brought a bad name to Science Fiction authors.
But, the book is still readable. I kept me up till 2 in the morning reading!
Rating: Summary: GREAT--keeps ya glued to the pages Review: This was the first where Gentry Lee came in. He keeps his distance here, only dishing out his ideas once in a while to shape the characters. It worked well here, but my review on Garden of Rama overrates the book a lot(I should have given it a seven). This one has a plot slightly more complex than Rendezvous. That makes it a little more interesting, but that is tempered by the fact that Clarke thinks he needs someone else to help him write! Lee gives the characters backgrounds and purpose, but makes them do things not normally seen in science fiction in such detail. I'm more concerned with knowing the purpose of the creatures and land formations and the craft altogether than how people make love in zero-gee. Aisde from that, this book has and interesting way of slighly answering questions proposed by the first one, but gives a dozen questions for every answer.
You get very attached to the characters in this book. I would suggest you don't, a lot of them die. I won't tell ya who does, but one of 'em dies really cool-like...
Rating: Summary: Two words: disapointment!!!!! Review: This book looks like Arthur C. Clarke change all the story that makes Rendesvouz with Rama so good: a whole new type of solar system with differents races em each planet that cannot live outside their environment. And Arthur also forgot those weird cities inside Rama which contains that holografic images of the "builders" of that huge spacecraft. I don't know if Gentry Lee has anything with that or if Clarke just change his mind along the period of time that exist between the two books, the book is relatively good, but the story is completely another
Rating: Summary: Perhaps better as a computer game than a book. Review: I couldn't put this book down. But its not what you may think. I wanted to keep reading to see if the plot was getting somewehere. It didn't and was I relieved when I finished it.
This is not typical A.C. Clark. The story rambled on and on, with excessive detail of the interior of the Rama ship. There were too many characters to hate and too many meaningless deaths. I think contrived is the word I would use to best describe the main and sub-plots. Was it truly necessary to make the media representative so vulgar and unscrupulous? I think not.
When I started to read the story I was sure that it was going to answer some of the imponderable questions left by the first book. It didn't, and by the end it simply left more questions (do I see a Rama III in the offing?).
I suggest a sad pass on this tale.
Rating: Summary: Great! Review: I loved this book. Much more detailed and explicit than the first. It had more of a plot. Excellent! Must Read! But read the first one first or you'll have no idea what's going on
Rating: Summary: An adventure the size of Rama. Review: It is true that a rather large portion of Rama II deals in building a picture of the crew destined to meet with Rama. This at first might discourage some readers who wish to jump the gun and get to the action as quickly as possible, but it's a necessary ingredient in a strong novel. Rama II is a wonderful adventure where one boards an alien vessel and explores a mysterious world of extraterrestrial wonders and science. I thoroughly recommend it
