Rating: Summary: Pretty dang good Review: The main reason I like this book so much is because it gives you a plot that is really interesting, The story is as follows 300 years has passed since the death of Allanon and four lands have changed greatly. The elfs have dissapered, the dwarfs are inslaved by the federation who have gained control over the fourlands. And strange creatures called Shadowen are seeking to destroy all the races. Rating: Summary: Very amazing story! Review: I think that "The Scions of Shannara" was one of the best books that I have read. It was very exciting, had a good plot, and always attracted me to read on. I think this was a great book to start off the Heritage of Shannara series."The Scions of Shannara" is about 3 Scions of Shannara: Par Ohmsford, Wren, and Walker Boh. They are the 3 main characters, but there are other important characters like Coll (Par's brother), Morgan Leah (Par and Coll's good friend), Steff and Teel (two Dwarves that help Par and his friends), Padishar Creel (the leader of the Resistance agains the Federation), Damson Rhee (a very important woman who helps the Resistance, and has a surprise at the end), Cogline (the "failed Druid" that tells all the Scions of Shannara to meet at the Hadeshorn), and Allanon (the dead Druid whose spirit came back and explained to the Scions what they must accomplish in order to rid the world of Shadowen, the evil, magic creatures). Once the Scions meet at the Hadeshorn Allanon reveals a terrible future and tells Par to recover the long-lost Sword of Shannara, Wren to discover the vanished Elves, and Walker Boh to bring back the Druids and thier ancient Paranor that has disappeared. All of these tasks are near to impossible. I think that "The Scions of Shannara" is an excellent book, and I would recommend it to people of all ages. The Shannara series is a great series, and I'm already reading the next book in the series. I would like to congradulate Terry Brooks for an outstanding book.
Rating: Summary: Impossible task(?)-Restore a lost society...rebuild a world Review: The shade of Allanon requests a gathering of the few people in the world that can attempt to prevent certain destruction of all that is known. He reveals the Future...and it is Darkness. Only a tiny band of beings can bring The Light to humankind...before all is lost. They must bring salvation to the masses, or see the end of civilization. Only the last of the Druids can help save the world...with help from a band of chosen ones. I deeply respect and admire Terry Brooks, a man who dissed a career in Law to take-up a quill and parchment. His writing is very enticing...his words draw you into the story, and you cannot escape his world. Tolkien got me through Middle school and Terry Brooks helped me survive High School, although I must admit I read Tolkien again and again--however, Terry Brooks is the only author I feel that I can mention beside the name of the master. This novel is not a "Lord of The Rings" nock-off, it is completely original. If you are looking for copy-cat stories, you should look else-where--although, the series does contain some of the same creatures and humanoids (sort-of), they are very original and exciting. I agree with the Future scenario, because of certain buildings and such that are encountered during the journey....our world devastated and rebuilt with Magick. One aspect of Brook's series that I feel very attracted to is the character Allanon, a Druid that sleeps for centuries or decades and awakens when he is needed. I have always felt a strong connection with this character.... Interestingly, this mysterious character guards a secret Storehouse of Knowledge and strives to save humankind from the Demonic Forces that want the world to live in Ignorance and Despair.
Rating: Summary: One of the better fantasy stories... Review: I purchased this book the day it came out many years ago...it wasn't until I was about finished that I realized that Terry Brooks was in NO way going to be able to tie up all the loose ends, and I was pleasantly surprised to realize that it was just the first in a series of 4-books. I was disappointed that it didn't end all-of-a-sudden...mostly because I am very impatient when it comes to reading books that are not just good, but leave you hanging at the end. This is one such book, VERY good, and it also just ends abruptly with the characters not even close to achieving their goals. The quest that the shade of Allanon tricks them into going on seems at first to be impossible, and well you never get to know the answer because it takes another three books to find out ultimately what happens. This was perhaps my favorite of the 4 in the 'Heritage' series with the possible exception of 'The Elf Queen' which was exceptional as well. I MUST admit that as much as I view Terry Brooks as an amazingly gifted author, I felt that 'The Talismans' wrapped things up a little too quickly. It seemed as though he was trying to reach a deadline by the editor, and wrapped things up almost too neatly. I can't explain it, I just felt this way even after reading it the 2nd time as well. This in NO way means it isn't a great book, it IS! But books 1 and 3 are MY favorite of this series. And if you want a REAL Shannara treat, check out 'The Voyage of The Jerle Shannara' already MY vote as the all-time best novel by Terry Brooks. Long live 'Shannara'!
Rating: Summary: first of four is a sucess Review: A basic overview: The druid Allanon comes back in the form of a spirit long enough to foretell the dreary future and to lay tasks upon Par and Col Ohsmford, Wren Elessidil and Walker Boh. Par must find the Sword of Shannara, Wren bring back the Lost Elves and Walker to find the Black Elfstone. To accompany this intriguing storyline is a cast of characters that are as fascinating as the main characters. This books opens into the same world as all the other books of shannara -only 300 years after the previous book. The wrinting along with characters and amazong storyline come together perfectly to form a great book. Just make sure that you have the ones that follow it already on hand when you finish it.
Rating: Summary: Great start for the next series Review: The Shannara books have always been great, and The Scions arenoexception. It drew me in right away, the elaborate story continuingto unfold into a grand quest which is seemingly impossible for the undertakers. The suspense and the amazing revelations intrigued me greatly....... The fact that Sword was similar to The Lord of the Rings should not discourage anyone from continuing the books. People who say, "Brooks is a terrible writer," etc, have no open mind. Anyway, the Scions of Shannara is an excellent start to a quest which is continued in the succeeding books. A great read!
Rating: Summary: My view Review: I have only read the first 50 pages of the book and i already rate it as the best book i have ever read. it drew me in so fast it took my breath away. I know that sounds kind of weird about a book but it amazed me. i believe that Terry Brooks is a wonderful author and i will continue to read his books as long as he writes them. everyone interested in mystery-suspense-science fiction books should read this.
Rating: Summary: NOT as good... Review: Well, I thought that Druid was boring. I started reading it, and then kept reading it only to get through it. However, at about page 180, there is a part that is very relevant to Elf Queen (SOOO much better) so, just read that part and get to the good half of the series
Rating: Summary: Oh my gosh! What a great book! Review: This is without a doubt one of the top three best books I have read. I was browsing through a library, bored, and picked up this book. I thought, "How can I read a book heavy enough to break my spinal cord by picking it up?" The answer to my question is this simple, this is a great, plot-building book. When the characters weren't fighting demons, there were planning an adventure. I grew to love a lot of the characters, and began to yell at the book whenever something displeasing happened to them. It captured me, and before long I will be attempting the feat of reading The Druid of Shannara...
