Rating: Summary: Cute, sugary and predictable. Review: A very cute book. Talia is very cute, but poor and misunderstood by her family. Her magical horse person is cute and helps her, and from that point everything is just pink sugary happiness. I did not find a single plot twist in this book. The whole chain of events is very predictable. When someone's a bad guy, they're a bad guy for good, devillish, menacing, power-hungry and without any kind of thoughts, doubts or feelings. When someone's a good guy however, they will be nice to Talia, help her all the way, and have their own personality consisting of only good things. Then they'll have some minor emotional troubles but nothing Talia couldn't cure with her awesome power. Early teen girls who like horses, heartthrobs and happy endings, this is the book for you.
Rating: Summary: A great intro to Ms. Lackey's books. Review: Never having read anything by Mercedes Lackey, I wanted to start with the first one. Lo and behold, it was a wonderful experience. Unlike a lot of fantasy, there wasn't much action in this series, but the character development was unsurpassed. Each character was unique and Ms. Lackey showed great ability in their interactions. The lack of action was more than made up for by the political intrigue and she actually makes you care for the main character and feel for her plight. All in all, a very good book.
Rating: Summary: THE best out there! You feel like you're really in Valdemar Review: I absoluteley LOVED this book! A nice librarian showed me to it, and I've read them 3 times already!
Rating: Summary: Talia is an inspiration for women of all ages!! Review: The three book trilogy is a great read for anyone! While it maybe classified as fantasy-fiction, alot of the subject matter is grounded in reality of our everyday lives. As Talia goes through her jouney of becoming a herald as well as maturing into a woman, the reader can't help but to fall in love with her and her life and be inspired!
Rating: Summary: One of the Best! Review: I got into Mercedes Lackey with Owlflight, but I was hooked with this series. I have never found anything quite like Mercedes Lackey. Her charachters are so real. I love the charachters in this series especially-Talia and Dirk almost become friends. An all around excellent series, and an excellent book. I can't praise it enough!
Rating: Summary: utopian societies are boring Review: Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of Lackey's books, but this is quite obviously an early attempt. The characters are pretty flat and fall under two categories: 1) perfectly humble and ethical shining warriors of light, or 2) power hungry evil monsters in human form. Talia is far too capable a person to nurse any kind of sympathy out of the reader past page 80 or so. I did like Lackey's explination of mind-magic and the imagery to go with it. The herald-companion link is perhaps TOO reminiscent of the dragonriders of pern series. Overall a nice entertaining read, but I prefer the Vanyel or Tarma and Kethry stories.
Rating: Summary: Awesome, incredible new world very creative and strong Review: I love all Mercedes Lackey books and this book is an example of why. Creative ideas mixed so well in a story that carries you all the way through the entire three book set. Mrs. Lackey's books intertwine so well, that the story of Talia can even be found as a sidestory in the rest of the Heralds of Valdemar series.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful Characters Review: This book was a great intro for me into Valdemar. I have to admit that Mecedes Lackey has a way of drawing you into her stories. I felt like I was part of Talia's Life. I can't wait to read the rest of Valdemar.
Rating: Summary: One of the WORST Valdemar books she has written Review: Can't you see "PERFECT LITTLE FAIRY TALE" more clearly if it had been written on the cover in bold letters? Ok I admit not bad for a first book, but her other books are better. ok so it wasn't TOO bad but it was too cliched for my tastes. But I guess i read the book after all her other BETTER ones so it's not as good...
Rating: Summary: For those who dream of wearing whites... Review: This book is a wonderful, easy read. I'd definately recommend it to fans of Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar novels as well as to young readers who are just getting into fantasy. Talia's plight is one so many people can relate to. This book is definately a must-read for those who long to wear Herald's Whites.
