Rating: Summary: My highest praise Review: My highest praise for a book includes three criteria points 1) can not put the book down from first page 2)lingers and 3)has become real to you. This book is suitable for juveniles and adults.
Rating: Summary: I entirely fell in love with this book! Review: This book was one of my all time favorites! I read it withen two days, I just couldn't put it down! Had it not been for school I would have read it in a day. Talia's so down to earth. But a couple things I noticed were, as said in review's of arrow's flight (which I have not yet read) there is only black and white, no greys. The only character that was somewhat inbetween was Skif. Something else I noticed when I read it was: It moves way too fast. the alternitive beign slow, I like it that way. But she goes from country girl to one of the highest ranking people in no more that 25 pages. But overall it was one of the best books I have ever read.
Rating: Summary: An interesting coming-to-age story I LOVED IT! Review: This was the first Misty book I read, and it was this book that captivated me and made me into the Misty fan i am today. Talia's character is extremely well-defined and brilliantly portrayed. It is easy to sympathize with the vulnerable and sensitive Talia, one of the only demure female characters Misty wrote about. (i mean- compare her to kerowyn or tarma and kethry!!) Despite the rather simplistic and uneventful plot, this story poignantly crafts the land of Valdemar, the heralds and the companions. The land of Valdemar completely engulfs you, and Misty seems to make the land completely realistic to you. Read this book, as well as the others in this trilogy, it'll be well worth your time!!
Rating: Summary: This is one of the best Young-Adult novels I Know Review: I Have read 2 copies of this book to pieces, it is so good. It is a classic story with some new touches, and deserves it's stars. When my own 3-year-old is 12 I will give it to her.
Rating: Summary: I have read this book four times over and still do not tire. Review: I have read this book(and the rest in the series) four times over, and I still do not tire of reading it. The characters such as Talia, are alive here, and very impressionable. Not only are the characters magnificent, but the Land of Valdermar is unique with mind magic, heralds, and companions. I recommend this book and any other Mercedes Lackey has written. Another author I recommend is Elizabeth Moon with the series, The Deeds of Paksenarrion.
Rating: Summary: This book was the best! Review: I'm 14, and when I was 12, my dad got me hooked with 'By The Sword', another book in this series. This book is one of my favs by lackey. I have now read and own all of the heralds of valdemar books, and this trilogy is still my fav! If you want a really well-written fantasy with well-developed characters, this is defanetly for you!
Rating: Summary: I absolutely loved this book!!! Review: I love this book so much I often reread it once a month. After the first chapter I knew I would have to read all of Mercedes books. I was drawn into Talia's world in an instant, and often imagining such a world did exist. I see things and think to myself wouldn't Talia love that, and often have to remind myself it's not real. Mercedes has a way of making her books seem so real. I can't say how much I enjoy this book.
Rating: Summary: This is one of the best fantasy series I have ever read. Review: When I was about 15 or so, I was really hungering for a good fantasy novel. My sister got me hooked on Misty Lackey's Heralds of Valdemar series. I simply could not put the book down. Some fantasy novels have you saying, "Yeah, like that could really happen." However, Misty Lackey has you sayting, "Really? Could that actually happen?!" Her blend of the everyday and the fantastic makes for interesting, yet believable fantasy. Who wouldn't dream of being carried off by a magical creature from their everyday life? Who wouldn't want to battle selflessly for a righteous cause. In short, who wouldn't want to be a Herald? I am hungrily awaiting any new entries in Misty Lackey's Valdemar series.
Rating: Summary: "Too perfect" is the point! Review: Yeah, the good/evil dichotomy is very black & white, and the Heralds are uniformly brave and selfles and so on, but hey, that's the whole point--right? Companions go out looking for the best & the brightest, and the Queen's Own is the best in the kingdom--that's the setup for the whole story. And with all that as a given, Lackey does a good job of making the main characters less than perfect -- come on, don't you want to yell at Talia sometimes and say "Yes, people like you!"? -- especially Talia's long process of getting over her abusive background. Plus the whole idea taps directly into the teenage (especially teenage girl) longing to have someone who understands you completely AND a beautiful white horse AND escape from the mundane. It may not stand up to Lackey's later, more adult works, but as a young adult novel, or an escape for any age, it does exactly what it's supposed to. Plus it's gotta be the only first-fantasy-novel for young adults with positively-portrayed lesbian relationships, and I can't tell you how good THAT is for a young woman trying to find something to relate to other than "Ellen" or "Basic Instinct."
Rating: Summary: I've loved it for years Review: This particular Mercedes Lackey book is one of the first fantasy novels I read, a number of years ago. I loved it then and I still do, even though I no longer consider it her best work, although I really can't decide which novel or set of novels is. Just read them all and you will have a much fuller appreciation of the world she has created.
