Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Make sure you read the whole series!
Review: This is not a book to read by itself. If you do then you're missing a BIG chunk of the story. Oh and the reason I only gave it 4 stars is because of all the sex. =)

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Young Adult, I think not.
Review: I read this in college & it had more psychobabble & sex then I felt comfortable with. This is one of the most overrated books in science fiction. The protagonist belonged on Jerry Springer, the world described was bleak to the point of parody, & the psychology seemed bogus. If psychology is that moronic then I'm glad I don't believe in it.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: One of the best
Review: Loved this dramatic era of pseudo middle-aged explorations of fortune and glory. Pohl is the only SF writer i know who delt, in this book, with the psychological effect of General Theory of Relativity and it's time dilation. read it!!! (and the sequels too)

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Am I missing something??????????
Review: Along with tau zero this is my least favorite classic science fiction book. It won so many awards & is so highly praised that it is ,I admit, a classic. It did have good ideas, which it mostly ignored. Instead it talked about bleak characters, in a bleak world, doing bleak things in a bleak way, etc. Also this book gave me way too much information on the main character's sexual dysfunctions. Maybe my personal prejudices got in the way of my enjoyment of this book. For instance I dislike unrelenting bleakness & don't believe in psychology. Still I do not understand why I am the only person who disliked this book.

Summary: The best scifi book after Blade runner !!!
Review: I really, really liked this one. I can't describe why, but...if you like scifi you'll love this!

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: I guess tastes vary ... for me this was a mediocre "5"
Review: Most of the reviews for this novel seem to be 9s and 10s. Well, offering further proof that tastes differ, I found this book to be a mediocre 5. The world the author created wasn't terribly interesting, the lead character became tiresome by the middle of the story, and the sense of suspense the author tried to create wasn't justified by the ending. An OK read, but only if you're facing a long flight and don't have a better SF novel in your briefcase.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: What sci-fi should be...
Review: This is the book that made me love science fiction. It wasn't just space age technology and fantasy, but a fiction story with real characters. Pohl brilliantly explored Robinette Broadhead and his mechanical psycho-analytic machine Sigfreud in a displaced reality. This is what sci-fi should be focused on - the human reaction and interaction in alternate realities.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: The Best science fiction I have ever read
Review: Truly the best science fiction novel I have ever read. I made sure everyone I knew read this book as well so that we could discuss the many intricacies involved in this tale. I highly recommend the sequels as well.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Dave said "My God, it's full of stars" - If he'd only knew!
Review: The Gateway Asteroid reminded me of the narrative of Arthur C. Clarke regarding Dave's trip outward through the galaxy passing the ancient architectures of long lost space faring civilizations. Here in Space we find the ultimate Pandora's box: The Gateway Asteroid.. but instead of a single box to open we have a collection of ships with pre-designated destinations that may end in glory, wonder or death. Opening each chapter, each secret box, blasting out into space in each pod was a was a revelation and a delight. Like randomly picking a treat out of a chocolate assortment. Sometimes you get the nuts, sometimes the caramel, but now again you bite down into the sweet escape of a maple creme! Yum! I loved this book

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: An excellent merging of Science Fiction and Science Fantasy
Review: I also read this book in JR. High. I re discovered it more that 10 years later, and there are Sequals! A facinating world where people risk death to win fortune in a Blade Runner like environment. The earth is dying, and only the rich live well. One way to get rich, take an alien spacecraft to an unknown destination. You could starve, emerge in a star, or not find anything. Or, you can find riches that could save the Earth, and make you rich beyond your wildest dreams!!! Cool Book.
