Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Terrific and engaging children's adventure
Review: As a young girl, I probably read "The Wolves of Willoughby Chase" about fifty times. This tells the story of Bonnie Greene and her cousin Sylvia who are left in charge of the evil governess Miss Slighcarp when Bonnie's parents go abroad. Miss Slighcarp's evil machinations, the girls' resourcefulness and actions (particularly feisty Bonnie), and the suspenseful story kept me on the edge of my seat.

For those who enjoyed this book, Ms. Aiken wrote several other stories set in the "alternate England" of the nineteenth century, including "Black Hearts in Battersea."

Summary: Amazing
Review: This book is great if you love adventure. You never know what is going to happen next. It was difficult to read in some places such as when they would say ain't but it is different because it shows what it was like in the 1800's. I recommend this book to people of all ages.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Author retells archetypal tale
Review: There's something pleasantly familiar about this story. Two cousins are left in the care of a nasty governess, who wastes no time in converting the two to Cinderella-ish slaves.

The tale is set in an alternate England, but as it is a historical novel doubtless younger readers will not pick up on the idiosyncracies of the setting.

There is little humour--it's a rather serious book, really--but it's a page-turner. Think of it as a precursor to Snicket's more enthusiastic "A Series of Unfortunate Events."

Note: 3 stars, for me, is a pretty good review. 4 is for extremely distinguished works, and 5 only for those I consider classics. Most of what is published is, unfortunately, a 2 or less.

Summary: Loved it when I was younger - would I now?
Review: I really loved this book when I was younger, and would be interested to read it again to see if it gives me the same pleasure (a lot of books I used to love don't). I remember liking the contrast between Bonnie and Sylvia - one feisty and impetuous, the other sweet and meek - it makes me think now of the contrast between Jane andElizabeth Bennet, or Bella Wilfer and Lizzie Hexam. Of course I always identified with the feisty one, but you need the sweet mild one for balance. I also loved hearing about their escape from Miss Slighcarp and the awful orphanage-type place where they had to stay. It's true the book is sometimes quite scary and disturbing, but then so is a lot of Roald Dahl and some of the "Mary Poppins" books - I don't think children should be scared too much, but a little adds spice to a story.

Summary: Excellent reading!!!
Review: I read this book for the first time 13 years ago and to this day I have fond memories of it. It is an excellent book and would recommend it to any school child.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Excellent Book! I would recommend this book to anyone!
Review: This book was excellent, i have only read it twice but if i could check it out again i would. This book was definately one of the BEST I have ever read. I liked this book because it ranges from exciting, to terror, and then back to happiness. When i was first assigned this book i thought it looked like the stupidest thing i had ever seen. I also thought that Bonnie was a little self-centered snob that was spoiled rotten. As i continued to read i realized that she cared about her cousin and truly cared for the other orphans. I'm one of those people who likes a little bit of blood and gore, throughout the entire book i was waiting for someone to get eaten by a wolf. If someone would have i would have given it 5 stars instead of 4. Overall this was a good book and I look forward to reading other of Joan Aiken's books!

Summary: Worth reading over and over
Review: I was first given this book as a gift when I was 11 or 12, and read it over and over for years. It's gone missing within the past 25 years or so, but I never forgot it. It always totally absorbed my interest and started me on a lifelong love of everything English. Now that I know I can get my hands on it again, I'll buy a new copy to read over and over during the second half of my life.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: An action-packed book that makes you want to keep reading!
Review: This was one of the most enjoyable books I've ever read. I'm not the only one who thinks so either. All of my students in my class also agree. The character development, the adventuresome storyline, and the realism all made this book one that we could not put down. Thank you, Joan Aiken!
