Summary: Pretty good!
Review: Nina Idi, who played a part in Among the Imposters, is the main character in this book. It begins after she has been arrested by the population police and put in prison. She is offered the chance to work for the population police by finding out information from three illegal third children who have been arrested. She is to gain their confidence, and when they tell her what their real names are, any other third-children they know of, etc, she is to give that infromation to the population police. If she dosen't do it, she will be put to death. She dosen't want to betray them, but she dosen't want to die either. Finally, she manages to escape, and takes the three other children with her. She plans for them to go to the woods between the school she used to go to before she was arrested, and the boy's school, where they can grow food and hide. They get there safely, but then Nina realizes that she has no idea how to plant a garden. Then they find a garden someone has planted in the woods, and begin stealing food from it. However, one night, Nina goes to get food, and gets caught....I won't tell any more, 'cause I don't want to spoil the end. It's a pretty good book. Not as good as Among the Hidden, but I still liked it.

Summary: Elodie's dilemma
Review: Nina, who thinks of herself as a "ninny" (she hates her new name) for falling in love with Jason, who it is proven has betrayed her in hopes of saving his own skin, faces a new dilemma when she realizes her nightmare is reality and she wakes up on a hard, damp prison floor with her hands handcuffed: should she take the "deal" which is offered to her by a Population Police interrogator who she has named "The Hating One," and betray three young exnays (illegal third children), or should she die? Why not betray these children, she sometimes wonders - after all, no one made any moves to come to HER defense, and these kids don't seem to want anything to do with her. Nina struggles with losing her identity as Elodie, as well - as Elodie, she was someone precious and protected. As Nina, she's just an abandoned ninny. Nina decides to at least pretend to go along with the hating one's "deal," though she really doesn't want to. When a chance to escape presents itself, Nina debates whether to take the three children with her. She fears they will only slow her down, but if she doesn't take them, they will surely die because the hating one has only given her 24 hours to betray them. The children's escape leads to a startling discovery about who exactly is betraying (as well as who is protecting) whom, and why.

Summary: Hey, This book is great!
Review: Okay, It's obvious that Margaret Peterson Haddix likes subjects about the Population Police. She's written many books about it. But this one's by far the best one. You might be a bit bored in the beginning because you don't understand. But that feeling doesn't last very long. Okay, so Nina Idi is an illigal 3rd child, hiding with her grandma. Soon enough she is caught. To save her life, she must betray 3 children... or so she thinks. Read the book to find out what happens!

Summary: The 3rd best book ever written
Review: The first and second best book are the 2 books that before this one: Among the Hidden and Among the Impostors. I absolutely LOVE the series. READ ALL 3!

Summary: Truly a betrayal.
Review: The issue of population control is one of real concern for the planet, and should be a topic with plenty of meat to dig into from all perspectives. The author could have used this series to create a powerful story encouraging real reflection on the part of her young readers. Instead she has sensationalized it. This is nothing more than a cheap thriller pandering to the lowest marketing strategy.

What will our world do when our resources will not support human population? Try various different methods to resolve the issue while maintaining respect and dignity for people? Or create laws and enforcers to murder innocents? What story line would be a more productive use of young readers' time? Exploring the use of cooperation and responsible behavior to solve global problems, or exploring the use of fear, threat, force, and destruction? Which adds more depth and complexity to the plot; gray areas that explore rights and responsibilities, or a black/white evil enforcer/innocent victims scenario?

This book won't make it's way to my classroom, and I'll pass on the rest of the series.

Summary: Better, but needs some work
Review: The third in a sci-fi series (Among the Hidden, Among the Impostors, Among the Betrayed), Among the Betrayed is a futuristic story about a society in which population is limited. Families are only allowed to have two children each as a result of food shortage, and "shadow" (or third) children are hunted down by the Population Police and killed. Nina is a shadow child that has been betrayed by her friend, Jason, and put into jail. Though she believes she has been arrested for being a third child with a fake ID, she soon learns that the Population Police think that she has been turning in shadow children and is not actually one herself. Though her Jason is killed for the same charges, the Population Police feel that Nina can help them in finding out the background of arrested shadow children. Thus, a deal is proposed. Nina can help the Population Police by betraying other shadow children, or she can die. Faced with the dilemma of her lifetime, Nina must decide what is more important - her life or her honor?

Among the Betrayed is a well-written novel with an interesting plot that is full of surprising twists. However, I can not be fully satisfied with the book because I feel that it doesn't live up to the standards set by Among the Hidden (though it was much better than Among the Impostors) I think that Haddix's idea is a good one, but she needs to come up with something a little more interesting if she wants to hold the reader's attention for much longer.

Summary: Among The Betrayed is a wonderful book!!
Review: This book is great!! It is very exciting and it never leaves you without something to think
about. Margaret Peterson Haddix is an excellent writer and she definitely showed her skills
off in this book. I love how she makes this alternate reality seem so real. When you're
reading it's like a movie is playing inside your head because the story is so awesome! Can
you imagine what would happen if you were an illegal child? What if this was happening
to you? You HAVE to read this book and put yourself in Nina's shoes! What would you
do? Think about it while you read Among The Betrayed for yourself!

Summary: Bring Back Luke!
Review: This book is just fine, but definitely not as good as its predecessors ("Among the Hidden" and "Among the Imposters"). The story turns slightly from the original story which we were introduced to in the first two books by shifting the focus onto a new main character, Nina (Elodie) instead of Lee (Luke). This would have been fine except that I didn't find her character nearly as interesting as Luke. Not only that, but Nina is constantly bemoaning a failed romance, which is annoying and overblown (you just want to slap her and tell her to get a life). Over the course of reading the first two books I've become rather attached to Luke and missed learning more about him. While he is mentioned near the end of the novel, his presence is really minor...and sorely missed. The plot of this book is also a bit more transparent then the first two books, it did not surprise me or keep me on my toes, I could see the end before it happened. However, the plot still leaves open the room for more sequels so there is hope for another book in the future that is better then this one. "Among the Betrayed" is a fine effort and I recommended it if you have enjoyed "Among the Hidden" and "Among the Imposters", but don't expect it to be as good.
