Rating: Summary: Among the Betrayed Review: Aladin Library, 2003, 176pp., ISBN 0-440-22672-4 Among the Betrayed Margaret Peterson HaddixEverything was going pretty well at Hendricks School for Boys and at Harlow School for Girls, until a boy named Jason slips a note under the door to Harlow School for Girls. The note was an invitation to meet in the woods, right outside Hendricks, a couple times each week to discuss issues on what's going on at each of the schools. The most popular topic was the discussion about third children, who In this series of books are illegal, because the government is afraid of a food shortage. Jason is a betrayer and tricks all of them into confessing they have fake I.D. cards. This is a very dangerous for the third child and the family of the third child, if Jason tells the Population Police. The Population Police can kill you if you are an illegal child and for having a fake I.D. card. Nina is one of the kids who were betrayed and something and might happen to her and maybe even Jason. Luke might be accused too; for being a third child. To find out what happens to Luke, Nina and Jason read Among the Betrayed, a third book in the Shadow Children Series. (It is recommended that you read the first two books.)
Rating: Summary: Among The Betrayed Review: Among the Betrayed by Margaret Peterson Haddix is a science fiction book where families are forbidden to have more than two children. Nina, the main character and also the third child, is betrayed by someone she loves, and later falsely accused of treason and imprisoned by the Population Police. The Population Police are in charge of capturing third illegal children. Nina is put into a no win situation where she has to choose to betray the friends she has come to trust or be executed. When Nina has an opportunity to escape, she takes her three new friends, Matthias, Percy, and Alia along with her. When they run out of food, the decision is made for Nina to find help in a school she knew, Hendrix School for Boys. Nina is captured and taken to Mr. Talbot for interagation. What does Nina soon learn? Nina soon realizes that everything is not what it seems, and she realizes that she has been put to a test by the people who are trying to save her. Does Nina pass the test? I like the way Haddox made Nina a believable character, and showed how she agonized over her decisions she had to make. I believe teens today can related to Nina in that, they also, have tuff decisions in their life to make. Read the book, it's awesome!
Rating: Summary: Among the Betrayed Review: Among the Betrayed by Margret Peterson Haddix is an awesome book. It takes pace in a cold, wet, and dark cell. One of the main characters is Nina, an illegal third child. You can see everything in this book in your mind because of Margret P. Haddix's good use of descriptive language. This book is a tricky math problem. Everyone is setting everyone else up. If you are good at math this would be an awesome book. Margret haddix is a wonderfull author and I give this book 5 Stars.

Rating: Summary: Among the Betrayed Review: Hey! ... this book by Margret Peterson Haddix is a story about love, hatred, betrayal, and surivivsl. the main character is Nina Idi, or is it? Nina ( thats is her fake ID name) is an illegal third child. her real name is Elodie. The setting takes place at a prison. It adds to the mood because everyone acts depressed. It is not a normal jail it is a jail for illegal third children. Unfortunatly Nina was found at Harlow school for girls. I love this book! I would recommed this to anyone! That's why I gave it 5 stars
Rating: Summary: Among the Betrayed Review: I read this book a few years ago, but my opinion on it stands. Perhaps I was expecting too much from a book aimed at 5th graders and below- but then, considering I was a 5th grader at the time, I feel somewhat insulted that books such as this series is what is thought as prime literature for students at that age. True, I was more gulliable and accepting of unexplained plot devices when I was younger- but to think that modern society underestimates the intelligence of an average 10-12 year old to this level-I feel embaressed. The main character gave me chills. Her personality is best described as jittery and ignorant, both in common sense and conviction. And yet from every conceivable faucet she was only given praise and consideration, as if in the real world "ninnies" like her are treated like members of MENSA. Everytime I read about her berating herself using her self-given nickname, ninny, I couldn't help but agree with her. She is a weak protagonist and makes a horrible example for what children should aspire to be.
Perhaps author's on children's books are thinking only of thier simple enjoyment of the book; that's all well and good, but I think at this point some other things could be beneficial to both writer and reader. For one, a well-thought out story could very well improve the book. Gratuitous randomness, as much as it makes the unthinking reader fawn over the "coolness" as the heroine, is just a cheap shortcut substitute for character development and plot. Nina disables a security camera, steals food supplies, etc random military tasks that somehow an untrained and quite dull grade-school girl accomplishes...and in the end, it turns out that it was all a grandiose scheme of ensuring her loyalty. And somehow, it justified exposing several children to extreme danger and discovery by the enemy, as well as investing a vast organization's resources on one dumb, useless waif. The explanation stinks of Deus ex Machina, and if anyone values the quality of thier child's reading material, I strongly disadvise reading this book. Or maybe it is a perfect read for kids, if, as the author seems to think, kids are low-intelligence and so naive they'll swallow any junk that can be printed on paper and called a gripping novel.
Rating: Summary: Among the Betrayed Review: I really liked this book. It put you on edge to see if Nina is going to betray the three other kids. Because Jason bertays her she has a chance to redeam herself. If she could just get the three to talk and tell her serects she is free. You cannot wait to turn the page. I like this book and I recommend you read this book.I like how she put in the world of fiction books. Haddix is a great writer and I like how she has a creative touch to make a good book. If you have not read the first two books you might want to read them because you would be left in the dark. Its a book about heartbreaks, betrayal, suspense, adventures, and secrects. Find out if Nina becomes a betrayer.
Rating: Summary: Among the Betrayed: A Review Review: If this book were part of a series, I would understand the way it seems to badly need a prequel and/or sequel better, but it stands alone. In my opinion, it shouldn't. It's repetitive and seems to be desperate for another book to explain it's weak plot!
Rating: Summary: Not as good as the first but still good Review: In Among the Betrayed by Margaret Haddix, Nina is accused of telling the government that certain people were shadow children when they really weren't. When Nina meets her interegator, he gives her a choice, she can die or make the other three prisoners in her cell tell her where they are from and where did they get those fake ID's. Nina doesn't know what to do. Should she squel or die? But when (conveniently)a guard is poisin and drops his keys to Nina's cell next to Nina's feet, Nina takes the keys. When Nina comes back, Matthias, Percy, and Alia (the other three prisoners) are huddled next each other sleeping. Nina wakes them up and tells them her plan. They would run as far away as they can from the prison, and when safe they would visit Luke (main character from first book). During their journey, Nina learns of her friends "streetsmarts". When they reach Luke she learns that he didn't trust her and niether did the whole school (which was full of shadow childs). Later on Nina meets with the interogator again and he tells Nina the he is Mr. Talbot father of Jen Talbot who tried to make a huge protest so the government would take away the two kids limit law. She also learns that the whole prison/runaway was all a big test to see if Nina could really be trusted. I recommend this book for people who like realistic fiction. I also recommend this book for people 7-14.
