Rating: Summary: Extremely Good Book Review: This book gives a very realistic view of the future that
might be. The book may be fiction but the future it potrays
may not.
Rating: Summary: Still a Great Adventure Review: H.G. Wells, in The Time Machine, spins a classic tale full of adventure, vivid landscapes, sci-fi speculation and even a bit of veiled socialist politics. An eccentric scientist, known only as the Time Traveller to us, invents a machine that can travel along the fourth dimension, which he has discovered to be time. He flings himself into the far future. Is there high civilization? No. Is there high technology? No. What he finds in the future is far more curious... Personally, I couldn't put it down. I was reading it on a train trip, and I was so involved, I almost missed my station! Well's style really drew me in. It was like being told the story by an old friend. His descriptions are simple and effective, and you can almost feel the curiousity of the Time Traveller. Like him, you will want to know what happens next, from the speculations at the beginning, to the question filled ending. Though much of it has been imitated and repeated in time travelling stories since, I thought the "scientific" parts of the book were still fresh today, particularly the reasons Wells gives for why we can't naturally go back in time, and why you will never see a person in the process of travelling back in time. Very clever. In some ways, the "future" part of the book is a cautionary tale, in some ways it's a social commentary. Either way, the general message I got is that the actions of the past will have consequences in the future, even if we might not see them. Extensions of this concept have been very well used in science fiction since. If you're looking for a well written adventure to capture you're imagination for a few hours, the Time Machine is a book worth checking out. Exciting and thought provoking all the way.
Rating: Summary: The Time Machine Review: The Time Machine by H.G. Wells depeicts the story of a man known as the time traveler who travels into the distant future with a time machine that he creates. I enjoyed this book pretty well, it is quite short and a quick read. The story is told through the voice of a man who is visiting the time travalers house at one of his many dinner parties. The entire book is written in first person. All and all a good book and an interesting view on what future lies ahead as told in the late 19th century.
Rating: Summary: The Time Machine, an Invention Review: Traveler
The Time Machine, an Invention
By: H. G. Wells/ Modern Library
During the last century time took place in one big controversy when people often debated about its existence. Wells introduces the story by presenting the Time Traveler, who is the protagonist. He is showing his great invention to a group of men that does not share his ideas, the Time Machine. When trying to test his machine the Time Traveler zooms into the future expecting to be emerge into a sort of technological paradise; but the surprise is big when he sees himself into a place populated by some sort of short and round creatures known as Elois. This angelical people who lived in complete leisure, picking flowers and eating only fruit, because they have develop perfect bodies, live together in large houses and seem to thrive on an indifferent communist society. In the other side, however, the Morlocks populate the underground world. They have a pale beastly looking and they provide clothing to The Eloi before eating them.
When the Traveler in his Time Machine, the evil Murlock presence disturbed the peace and stole the Time Machine. It took the Time Traveler about eight days and thousands of discoveries to find the Machine again. Knowing the exact location of the Machine he tries to get it back while being hunt by the Murlocks. The thin plot is just enough to entertain the reader and retain their attention to H. G. Wells' ideas on the development of society. Many of his points of view Wells say that our present generation is leading to a kind of self destruction which I agreed supporting my thoughts with present events that are devastating our life style.
Rating: Summary: Why? Review:
The title of my book is the time machine.
The author is H. G. wells. This book was written over hundred years ago, in the early nineteen hundreds. To me this author is the best. He describes every ting so well that it makes you feel like you were there. For example the meetings that he had with his friends. I thought that I was really sitting with the group and I could watch him trying to convince us that this thing really works. That's how good this story is.
This story is basely about how this guy goes to the future and confronts a new generation. The catch is that there is also anther type of species living under ground in tunnels. They are called lurks they are stronger, faster. Basely the humans stand no chance against the lurks. The only thing is that the lurks can not come out during the day light. It will kill them. Ill live it right there so it can be more interesting, and so you can read it.
Rating: Summary: I have seen tomorrow and..... Review: Wells was a true genius, describing places that are very much real. The descriptions of the Landscape of the earth of tomorrow with all the flora and fauna, and the haunting realism of emotion and character make this book along with his others the most genuine science-fiction to read.
For me, The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds moved me in a way that I will always remember.
Rating: Summary: a dated but still an enjoyable classic.. Review: Written in 1895, 'The Time Machine' has a very dated, musty aspect to it. It's naive and far from realistic. But even if one discounts the over-simplicity of the story it is hard not to get caught into the strange, distant future world (greater London to be exact) created by H. G. Wells. His vision has been copied and arguably improved upon over the past century. However even now the story enthralls. And the compactness of the narrative, in a book scarcely over 100 pages, is remarkable.
Bottom line: yes, it is the sort of science fiction of your great-grandfather's generation. Thankfully it is still worth reading.
Rating: Summary: Time Machine: Are We Then Yet? Review: The Time Machine is a classic novel about an unnamed traveler that adventures to a different, futuristic time. He finds this future has 2 very separate worlds. One made up of the fortunate upper class that is intelligent and small in size. The other a boorish lower class of workers, forced to live underground. This timeless piece outlines the possible consequences of a growingly divided world between the more and less fortunate. And the differences between the physically superior and the mentally superior. Wells paints a vivid picture of this future world with descriptions of the settings and characters appearances. However the one thing that is most vague is the chief character that is not even awarded a name but is called simply "the time traveler." This book outlines the conflict involved with classism and is still relevant in today's society. It is a must read for all people interested in classic literature.
Rating: Summary: Maybe a little dated Review: This novel is a classic for a reason. The writing is excellent and the thought process behind it are even better. This novel was not only about time travel but about consequences of social philosopies. Some of the science in the novel is dated but it does not really detract from the novel very much. It loses one star for length though. Wells could have written an epic here and totally missed his chance.
Do not confuse this with the recent movie. The only similarities are that they both were about men in time machines going forward in time.
I would classify this as appropriate for all ages, although, some of the language and ideas may be hard for younger children to grasp.
Rating: Summary: The Time Machine Review: The Time Machine by Herbert George Wells logs in as one of my favorite books of all time! Every aspect of this novel is captivating and thought-provoking; the storyline is a deeply stirring yarn that skillfully puts forth the amazing premise of time travel. The characters are well-developed, mysterious people; the majority of characters are not named, thus maintaining a style that emphasizes the unknown.
The storyline concerns a man known by his circle of friends as Time Traveller, due to the astounding project he has undertaken. As the story begins, he is teaching to his colleagues his theories of time travel, travel in the Fourth Dimension of space. After his friends reject his outrageous ideas, the Time Traveller undergoes a startling transformation seemingly overnight. Time Traveller then relates to his friends what happened to him, how he got himself into the startling state he was in.
Thus begins the story of one man's astounding journey through time to the future ages of Earth and his intense struggle to survive the many dangers of the unknown in the year 802,701 A.D. In that distant time he discovers that mankind has evolved into two separate species: the peaceful, primitive, and carefree Eloi, and the hostile, barbaric, and monstrous Morlocks, who live under the Earth in a vast underworld community. The Morlocks survive by preying on the helpless Eloi race, who are in constant danger of being devoured. The Eloi live on plant and vegetable life; the entire surface of Earth had become a giant garden.
When the Time Traveller arrives, he suddenly finds himself caught up in this conflict between the two species, as he strives to defend the helpless and ignorant Eloi from the carnivorous and subtle Morlocks. In the midst of this hierarchy conflict, he seeks a way to escape this time and return to his own time. In the end he manages to escape the clutches of the Morlocks and recover his time machine. But instead of returning to his own time, he is driven forward, wanting to uncover the mystery of Earth's destiny. Millions of years later he arrives to find the answer to the mystery before finally returning to his own time countless years into the past.
The Time Machine is a novel that captivated me and fired my imagination. It is one of the most thought-provoking stories I have ever read; it really makes you think. It is very intelligent and believable. Herbert Wells conception of time travel is very professional, he seems to know what he is talking about. One aspect of the ideas put forth in this story concerning time travel is that there is no difference between Time and any of the three planes of Space except that our consciousness progresses recurrently along Time from the beginning to the end of our lives. In that way, the distinction between Time and the other planes of Space does not exist in reality. HG Wells also discusses at length the social condition of his future world as compared to the world of the present. The book is in my mind an attack against Communism and promotes free enterprise. Through this story he expresses his views of society in a very professional and down-to-earth way.
In conclusion, I highly recommend The Time Machine to anyone looking for a captivating, thought-provoking story that will never be forgotten. 5 stars.
