Rating: Summary: Loved it Review: I have read other Card books and picked up "Memory of Earth" just based on reading the back. I ended up loving it and am now halfway through the 3rd in the series. It definitely kept my attention and was a refreshing change from the "Hard" Sci fi I sometimes read. I had no idea it was a retelling of the Book of Mormon as these other reviews suggest. That doesn't change my opinion, I still thought it was great.
Rating: Summary: Not his best Review: i just recently found out that this book is a paraphrase of the book of mormon and it finally made sense to me. Orson Scott Card is far and away my favorite writer and i've read all of his books - even Saints. However, i could never understand how he could manage to write such a boring book, now that i know it's based on the book of mormon it makes a lot more sense. Not to put Card down, this is his only series (i think) where the books get better towards the end of the series, usually things get worse as the characters grow up, but here they only get more interesting, probably as he gets farther from mormonism. i'd recommend the whole series, but i don't feel that this book is worth reading on its own.
Rating: Summary: YES!!! Review: This whole cycle is my all-time favorite work of Card's, and that's saying a lot. Entirely marvelous. Read it.
Rating: Summary: A tough beginning - a 6 so far. Review: I am about 1/3 of the way though this book. I usually baze through a Card book, but this one has a slow start and is taking me longer due to my lack of interest. I would not normally finish a book like this (hard to stay with). But, it is an ORSON SCOTT CARD book, and his other books have shown me to be full of surprises and to be GREAT reads. Reviews indicate this to be a very good series overall.
Rating: Summary: Great Series - What'd you expect from Card anyway? Review: I'm not Mormon and after reading the reviews here, found it amusing that this story is a paraphrase of the book of Mormon. Regardless, it weaves nicely into a sci-fi tale. Perhaps my favorite part of the saga is "the road to Damascus" scenario where God is described as the connection between all living things and Hell is described as being cast out of, or cut off from, that connection. As usual, Card tells a great story and makes you think about the bigger picture at the same time.
Rating: Summary: Wierd, but great. Review: This was a great book. I am a die-hard OSC fan and I have never read anything this thought provoking and powerful. I only recently found out after reading the series that the first few books of the Book of Mormon were used in the first chapters. I think that this only adds to to the book's greatness. Although I have never read the Book of Mormon, I assume it is similar to the Bible in that it's huge and not to easy to understand. The fact that Card could transform the Book into an awesome science fiction story only makes me admire the man all the more.
Rating: Summary: Great Book. Very Basic yet complex story line all wraped int Review: o 1. I really enjoyed reading The Memory Of Earth. It is the second Card series I have read (The Ender series being my first). I liked the ideas of being 50 million years into the future and not havind destroyed ourselves and not having any weapons of mass destruction (nuclear bombs, atomic bombs, hydrogen bombs, chemichal weaponry,etc.). I am kind of amazed though that the original descendants of Harmony actually expected human kind to progress so much in 20 million years as proven in the book they were double that and ready to utterly destroy each other.Over all one of the best books I have ever read.
Rating: Summary: Card's philosophical perspective gets lost in the jargon Review: After reading the Enders series, I was prepared for a novel with a tight story line, a philosophical perspective and characters that have such a definitive moral and intellectual position that a consistant fair conflict was fesible. Instead, I was bombarded with a barage of misleading evidence and a plot development that had the makings of a high schooler. The characters power struggles usually ended up with either a fist-fight, or an unended conflict that resulted no where. These characters learned nothing from their mistakes, and continued to perform as a 5 year old when scolded. It seemed that Card wants to carry these small conflicts into each novel to bring familiarity, but all it brings is a sense of immaturity from even the God-like being. All in all, this book is hardly worth the $5.95.
Rating: Summary: A Good Seminary Teaching Tool Review: I thought that this was a great book with a good storyline. I'd recommend this book to anyone who like sf. If you're a Mormon, though, you may find the plot a little predictable. I thought that Nephi (pardon me, Nafai) could have been less of a wimp. In the original version (and I mean ORIGINAL version) I didn't see him as being so obsessed with 'being a man'. It is a good story, and with a few modifications, it might be fit to write in gold!
Rating: Summary: Don't be put off! Keep reading the rest of the series. Review: I'm a big Card fan but Memory is a bit of a dissapointment. However don't give up on the series as no. 2 and 3 are really gripping.
