Rating: Summary: The greatest Brook's novel to date! Review: This book, takes off where the last one left off. I don't know how many of you read any of Terry Brook's Shannara series, but I will confidently say his Shannara series is a bench mark in quality fantasy, mind you I read lots of fantasy books. He doesn't bore you with details, he entertains you with details. You really feel intoned to all the characters, even after reading his previous nine Shannara books, I still find that I want him to write more and more. He should make a role-playing game like final fantasy, I mean his story telling far exceeds anything they would write and it would be fun to go through the books. anyway I'm just pleased Terry is still writing his great shannara epic, and I'll buy the next one as soon as its available.
Rating: Summary: Computers in a fantasy novel? Review: If you thought that Isle Witch left you hanging, wait until you read the ending of Antrax, you'll be tearing out your hair until September of 2002. Yet again characters are split into different groups, each one left hanging in some comprimising situation where someone isn't going to make it out in one piece, but you'll have to wait a whole year to see who comes out alive.I was a little wary of a fantasy novel that deals with science and technology, the flying ships really disappointed me in Isle Witch, but I got used to them, and focused on a great story. After a while it didn't even bother me that there was a 2500 year old computer still in working condition... If I could get a computer to last that long. If anyone can pull off mixing technology and magic, it's Terry Brooks. Brooks has already shown us a world in where a little bit of magic can exist in a modern world (Word and the Void), now it is time to show the reverse. A little bit of science in a world of magic. Well, it isn't the first time we've seen technology in the Shannara series, remember the creeper in The Sword of Shannara? Oh yeah, and if you pay real close attention, you find out the origin of the creepers, and how they managed to survive the 2000 years or so since the Great Wars. It took me a while to remember who everyone was from Isle Witch. There are so many characters, and it has been a year since I had read the first book. But I eventually figured it all out. Now that a lot of the minor characters have been weeded out, and there is some sembelence of groups again, maybe the next book won't be so trying on my memory.
Rating: Summary: alright....where's the fantasy Review: I enjoyed the book, but it felt too short for me. Terry Brooks is a splendid author, and I like fantasy and science fiction novels, but its weird when you put the two together. To me they do not mix very well. Magic versus science and machinery, its hard to imagine.
Rating: Summary: Worst Shannara Book ever Review: I have been reading the Shannara series faithfully for 10 years, and I have never been disappointed with a Shannara novel until now. The book lacked any form of character development and was seemingly devoid of any advancement in the story until the last 50 pages when it is too late. I have been hoping for a character to emerge and capture my heart in this series, but none have. There is no Balinor, no Garet Jax, no powerful Leah, Quinten is a huge disappointment. I will buy Morgawr only because I am dedicated fan--I only hope that the next book, the conclusion, will not leave me disappointed with the series.
Rating: Summary: A solid work by one of the best..... Review: In his new installemnt in the Voyage of the Jerle Shannara series, Terry Brooks offers up a very unusual spin on his world of the Four Lands. Science and technology, hinted at and looming in the shadows of the readers perception is presented boldly here. The book is in many ways almost a science fiction with magic. It is this element which both intigued me and bothered me at different points. The investigation of the band of companions into the city of Castledown continues from the first book, Isle Witch, and we learn that the technological marvels of the place are more sophisticated and far reaching than we first thought. The characters are plunged into a world so completely alien to them that you feel them being transported to another world. This blend of high fantasy and science provides the intrigue and the basis for much of the riveting action sequences. The story is fast paced enough to hold your nose to the page and the characters deeply defined enough to keep you from feeling like you are reading a comic book. In that respecta nd others, Mr. Brooks has found a perfect balance. Why then do i only give it 3 stars? A personal preference actually. I am not or have I ever been a fan of the the magic-meets-science theme. Fantasy novels are pure escape for me and having something like a computer present never sits quite right with me. If science and technology are hinted at or used in the background in some way, I usually find it easier to swallow. As I said, just a personal peev. That said, I must admit I found the book hard to put down and while I hold some of Terry Brooks' other novels in higher regard, I do not hesitate to recommend this one to an interested fan.
Rating: Summary: Shannara Takes a Turn for the Dark Side Review: This is the second book of the latest installment in the Voyage of Jerle Shannara series, a masterpiece in and of itself, those with queasy stomachs might find this book a little difficult to deal with. This book is not so much a work of Science Fiction or Fantasy as it is a work of Horror. It is well done--and the elements of Science Fiction and Fantasy both are still readily present--but the tone is similar to one of Stephen King's novels. Be forewarned: there are aspects of this story that make Morrowindle (in Elf Queen of Shannara) look like Disney World. That being said, this is an increadible masterpiece of fantasy (bordering Science Fiction in some parts) that is absolutely engrossing. It catches you up in its story and carries you in its current. I found it difficult to easily put down once I had been caught up in it and would have finished it earlier if it had not been for engineering classes. As is true to Brooks's style, there are multiple stories running simultaneously that switch to other stories on cliffhangers. This leads to the last sentance of every chapter bringing you up to the cliff and sending chills down your spine for what it reveals, which is mildly annoying since my eye developed a tendancy to jump and I had to cover up the last page till I was actually on it to savor the effect of the words. An excellent book that I highly recommend, but if you couldn't stomach The Stand (by Stephen King) it probobly isn't for you.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic! Review: A fantastic novel! If you've read Shannara before, you'll love this! It's quite a bit darker than his other books, but that only adds to the experience! If you've read Terry's Ilse Witch, then buy this book right now, you won't be disappointed!
Rating: Summary: Fantastic! Review: A fantastic novel! If you've read Shannara before, you might be surprised by what you see in this book. It's quite a bit darker than his previous books, but that takes nothing away from the experience! If you've already read Terry's Ilse Witch, then get this now! You won't be disappointed!
Rating: Summary: Antrax Review: I am 14 years old and have been reading the shannarah series since I was 10. It is one of the best series I have ever read. I cant wait until I get the new boook!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Book! Review: This book was excelent! When I got the book, I kept thinking of your typical 2nd book in a trilogy (slow, boring) and this book was the total opposite. The action is as intense as the first book and it leaves you wanting the third book even more than before. I dont want to say too much, but there are lots of subplots, revelations about characters, and even the death of more than a few of the expeditions. But, I have already said too much! So, go buy the book already so you can see what I mean!
