Rating: Summary: This is the king of fantasy books!! Review: I don't see what these Tolkien fanatics have against Terry Brooks. Sure he uses the same ideas, but imagine all the Stephen King rip offs there are. The charecters are far more interesting than Tolkiens everyone is happy and wants to help out style. I love Tolkien, but not nearly as much as Brooks.
Rating: Summary: tolkien rippoff Review: Come on, Allanon. Please this is Gandalf. The only differce in that this guy is the most boring and stupid Gandalf copy i have ever seen. The hero has to go on a quest to destroy the Skull dude. To do this he has to find a sword that will enable him to do this. He has only a few companions. Everything stinks. The characters arent developed, the plot is boring and the bad guy is barely mentioned. This is the worst Tolkien ripoff i have ever seen.
Rating: Summary: great book, amazing Review: I recently read the Sword of Shannara, and I thought is was the best book I have ever read. I couldn't put it down! I highly recommend this book for everyone at its reading level.
Rating: Summary: This is the all-time best book I've ever read. Review: When I first read this book two months ago, I didn't know what to think. It really did get my attention with stuff that I wanted to read. Especially all of the magic and battle scenes. Because I like this book so much, I've written shcool papers on it and I've also read the next 4 that go with it. I think that if you read anything at all it will not surpass this.
Rating: Summary: Should be six stars. Review: I don't know why Tolkien zealots have such a problem with Brooks. They say things like, "No plot" when they don't even mean it. All just in an attempt to put down Brooks. One of the other reviews I read said Robert Jordan is better than Brooks, yet his themes and characters are stolen from many different places... including Brooks' Shannara series. Yes, Tolkien started this genre, but that doesn't mean other authors can't use the same concepts and still write a good story. This book is my favorite book. It's highly entertaining and worth 10 times the money one would pay for it. If I had to pick one book that everyone should read, it's this one.
Rating: Summary: Extremely Entertaining!!! Review: I look below and see all the comparisons to a Lord of the Rings. Well, hang me, but I haven't read the Lord of the Rings, so I can't make that comparison. The main reason I picked up this book was for two reasons: One: I've heard others I know speak highly of it. Two: Brooks is writing the novelization of the next Star Wars novel and after reading an interview with him about that, I knew I had to pick it up. Once again, I don't know about all this comparison stuff, all I know is that I wanted to be entertained, and this book delivered that big time! Personally I could relate to Shea, he's probably about the age I am right now and he made some of the same desicions I probably would have made in his situation. So I felt like I was there with them, and I cared deeply about each and every character. Despite their flaws, each proved to be heroic by the end. The battles were well described and I never bored while reading the action scenes. So, all I'm saying is that if you're not worried about the comparisons to other certain works and merely wished to be entertained, I could hardly recommend a better book. After all, no one ever gripes at George Lucas for lifting from other works and ancient myths to put in his Star Wars movies, because they are so entertaining on their own, like this book.
Rating: Summary: I like this book. I am NOT an "inexperienced reader". Review: First of all, let me say that I am NOT an inexperienced reader. I have read David Eddings. I have read Robert Jordan. I have read Tolkien. I am NOT an inexperienced reader. All of the authors listed perviously are excellent. They are incredibly gifted authors, and I am not taking any of their credit away. Yes, I've read my share of fantasy, I'm 13, and I read this entire series while I was 9. Whup-de-do. Just read this book, it really is good.
Rating: Summary: I LOVE THIS BOOK! Review: This is one of my two fave. authors. (The other is Morgan Llewelyn, for those interested :). I love this book, I really do. Sure, it has lots of similarities with Lord of the Rings, but it's still a good book. BTW, Shea is NOT pronounced as "she", but as "shay". It's Irish, and it can be find in the family name "O'Shea". ("son of shea". If there's a son of Shea, there also has to be a Shea, I suppose.) Besided, it's really childish to judge a book by the names of its characters! Once again, GREAT BOOK!
Rating: Summary: An excellent fantasy adventure novel Review: I am quite surprised to see the number of negative reviews of this book. Sure there are similarities to Lord of the Rings. The book should be appreciated as a separate work perhaps in praise of Tolkien. Furthermore, as a physician in training, I don't have time to read a huge trilogy like LOTR. It took me 3 weeks to read SOS and I loved every bit of it.
Rating: Summary: This book is long, but very good. Review: While the version I read was 714 pages long, it is one of the best books I have ever read. This is weighed against such classics as The Three Musketeers, The Iliad and The Odyssey. This book, like many others, is of the Tolkien breed, but it is better then most. A good book to read if you have lots of time on your hands.
