Rating: Summary: A Good Read Review: It was 1977, and I was stuck in a hospital for six weeks. The Sword of Shannara came across my hands. I had never been much of a fantasy fan. However, this book turned me into one. Shannara took me away from my daily routine of hospital life. And for that I am thankful that Terry Brooks started writing. I have been a fan since.
Rating: Summary: The ending is terribly quick Review: I though this book was great! It had me reading all the time. But there were a few things I didn't like that might help you... - too wordy - characters traveled across the map too quickly, was almost unrealistic - the ending came within 50 pages and was distastefully terrible I liked the book all except for the ending. I do recomend you read it because you might appreaciate it more than I did.
Rating: Summary: Could it take longer to get interesting? Review: I read this book, finally. I tried starting it 3 separate times. I finally got past page 200 and my god, something happened. It slowed down again, but something happened briefly anyway. If you have a lot of patience for verbose descriptions enjoy.
Rating: Summary: The Sword of Shannara: Best Novel Ever? Review: In my opinion, it is certainly one of them. The plot flowed very nicely, extraordinary characters were introduced, and the concept of the world's fate resting on the shoulders of one simple man was very exciting. I recommend this book to any one with a love for fantasy.
Rating: Summary: A comparison Review: OK I HAVE REALLY JUST STARTED THIS BOOK. BUT I AM ENJOYING IT. NOT UP TO THE SPEED OF JORDAN GOODKIND OR WILLIAMS BUT WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO TALK ABOUT IS THIS TOLKIEN GUY. WHO IS HE. I MEAN HE WROTE HIS BOOKS SO LONG AGO MOST OF THE PEOPLE I KNOW WERNT EVEN ALIVE YET, SO WHY IS EVERYTHING ABOUT FANTASY COMPARIED TO HIM. I READ ONE OF HIS BOOKS AND IT WAS SO BAD I THREW IT AWAY. I HATED EVERY WORD OF IT. ON A BAD DAY JORDAN COULD OUT WRITE THIS GUY. UGH. STOP TALKING ABOUT TOLKEIN AS IF HE IS GOD OR SOMETHING. SO HE WAS THE FIRST TO WRITE ON FANTASY. SO WHAT. SOMEONE ELSE WOULD HAVE COME ALONG. SO STOP WITH THE TOLKIEN. OH THE SWORD WAS A GREAT BOOK, BUT I RECOMMEND WoT OR THE SWORD OF TRUTH SERIES. AND TAD WILLIAMS.. IS JUSTAS GOOD
Rating: Summary: Beautifully Written!! A masterpiece of Fantasy Writing! Review: This book is awsome. It redefines everything you think you know about the world of fantasy. It is slow to begin but it is definatly worth it. It is one of those book series you wish would not end.
Rating: Summary: I just have one thing to say: Review: This book is very good! I loved it, I also loved The Lord of the Rings. There is something that bothers me about these reviews: the way they compare the two books. There is one review that says that the shire is like the Shady Vale, and that a young unknown character is suddenly whipped into the middle of something big. Just let me say this: Frodo is exactly 50 years old when he leaves the shire. is 50 young? And unlike the shire, the shady vale is known about, people know that the boys are Valemen. Now since we see that some people are not capable of noticing these things, I find it hard to believe anything that they have to say: their opinions are not worth hearing. P.S. my email address is from Tolkien, so I am not a blithering, idiotic Brooks hound.
Rating: Summary: Very good book, not a rip off. Here is why: Review: I dare anybody right here and now to tell me exactly what elements of this book were exactly copied off of Tolkien. I have read Tolkien three times, and I love it, I have read most of the Brooks books more than once, and I love them too, how come I don't think that Brooks has copied of Tolkien while others do? I'll tell you why: because they try not to like it; they start reading it thinking that it isn't going to be as good as Tolkien, and they keep telling themselves this, and because of what they tell themselves, it becomes a truth for them. The only possible way that this book is copied off Tolkien is in the genre, this type of book didn't exist until the Lord of the Rings, so I guess you could say that all fantasy books are rip-offs from Tolkien, and that none of them are worth reading. There is a review on this list that refers to Cullhaven as being the Same as Rivindell. Rivindell is not inhabited by people who are actively at war with the enemy, Cullhaven is. Cullhaven is a Dwarvish capital, and the only reason that they are heading there, is because it is the arranged meeting place. Yes, I know that Rivindell was also the arranged meeting place, but are you telling me that fantasy writers are not allowed to have meeting places in their stories without being accused of plagarism? No offense, but that's really stupid. And ok, Allanon can be compared to Gandalf, but he is different. Allanon is dark and secretive and keeps all that he can to himself, Gandalf is a free speaker, and is a good friend of Bilbo, and later of Frodo. Allanon is a caretaker of the World, who only appears to the characters when there is something that he needs from them. Gandalf does not need anything from Frodo, he is merely a friend, who happens to be a Wizard giving advice to a comrade of his. And if you are determined on thinking that Allanon is a rip-off, then consider the same point again: all Fantasy novels have a Gandalf-like character: Allanon for Terry Brooks, Moiraine Sedei for the Eye of the World, and Zedd for Wizard's first rule. And just by saying this: "They go to Cullhaven or whatever: just like Rivindell." How is Cullhaven like rivindell? Other than both of the places being meeting points, there are no similarities. The Bottom line is that this book is excellent, I love it. don't get me wrong, I am a Tolkien lover too, but the difference between me and some other people is that I don't start into a book think in advance that it is going to be bad, because this book isn't!
Rating: Summary: Amazing: If you like Tolkien, you SHOULD like Brooks... Review: I've read this novel about 10 times now in the past five years. It seems new each time, the same Tolkien does. Reading about Allanon the Druid putting his pawns into place to find the Sword of Shannara and put an end to the Warlock Lord is good, and fresh. Our comic relief is Flick Ohmsford and Menion Leah bantering back and forth, in a similar manner to Tolkien's Gimli the Dwarf and Legolas the Elf. I HIGHLY recommend this book.... If you buy it and never read it before, enjoy every last drop of wording...
