Summary: Awful
Review: I had to force myself to finish this book. It was so unoriginal and boring, I almost just gave up completely.

Summary: Start of a brilliant Series
Review: I just have to say that The Sword of Shannara is an out standing book. I have been a big fan of fantasy for all my life and one day decided to pick up a diferent author. Well i did, and i can say that Terry Brooks has opened up a complete new world with his Shannara series and despite all the critism frim other reveiws saying the is a rip off of Tolkiens Lord of the Rings, is completely wrong. Of course there are som simularities, but almost all fantasy novel have the same type of situation, an evil has risen and someone must stop it.

The Sword of Shannara is an enthralling epic of a two young brothers who were drug into a quest to stop the evil Warlock Lord. The characters are all captivating each with compleely different personalties which alot of authors have been failing to achieve. Read this book and you will never be able to pu it down.

I have read all of the Shannara series up to and currently reading, Isle Witch, yet another outstanding peice. Terry has taken fantasy to an all new level.

Summary: The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks
Review: If you thought that the Lord of the Rings (LOTR) books were excellent, then you will LOVE the Sword of Shannara books!...
It starts out with a young lad named Flick Ohmsford meeting a man called Allanon while on a night walk in the forest. He takes Allanon to the inn that his father, Curzad owns. Allanon reveals that his adopted brother, Shea, is the last hope for the entire world. At first, with only the help of the elfstones, they pick up valuable allies and friends as their journey progresses. Finally, they have a showdown with the evil Brona to see who will posses the Sword of Shannara.
I loved this book because you feel that if you put it down, you'll miss the best part. At first, it is kind of hard to keep reading, but once it gets to the part that it grabs you, it really grabs you. Every now and then you'll ask yourself questions like, "will he survive?" or, "will they escape?'' With a unique plot, this book is among the better of Terry Brooks' books.

Summary: i have never actively hated a book this much!
Review: I've been reading fantasy for nigh on a decade now, and never never never have i read a book this horrible! i'm not just talking bad - i actively disliked this book.

I'm serious. Lack of originality is only my first complaint: it is the LoTR story as rewritten by Brooks - but without any true character development, setting, etc. His writing style is bland and un-evocative. even with LoTR as his story basis, Brooks still manages to make the plot line scramble and twist in so many unfeasible ways, that the final mess is unintelligable.

if you're a masochist and enjoy torturing your imagination, then please do read this book, it will be perfect for you.

Summary: Great Book to Read!
Review: As a fantasy lover, i truly recommend this book. It starts out with a catastrophe that changes the lives of two innocent young boys, Shea and Flick, forever. Unwilling, yet with no other choice, Shea starts off on a journey to save the world led by the mysterious druid, Allanon. I really enjoyedthe character build up. Allanon, mysterious as he is, it's hard to tell if he really is on the side of the four lands, or on the side of the Warlock Lord? Shea, normal and weak as he is, how is he going to save the four lands? Starting on a journey with little signs of victory, the greatest excitement is to see how they complete the impossible. Apart from the main quest, the adventures of each individual as they somehow get lost, interests me as well. Each little adventure, if explored enough, has potential to become another book. Although this is a great book, like some other readers i feel that this book has too many repetitive words in it. With some more editing, ths book could have been a lot shorter and sometimes not as irritating. However, other than that, this book is great, and to all fantasy fans, this book is a must read.

Summary: Derivitive Pap
Review: Like many others here, I read the Sword of Shannara at a young age, although after reading the Lord of the Rings. Even then (I must have been about 12 or so), I could see how much of a copy this was. It's as if someone gave an adolescent the Cliff's Notes to Lord of the Rings and told him to write a book based on it. I don't buy the idea that that's OK because 'no one has any original ideas after Tolkien.' Apparently these people have never read A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin, which I HIGHLY recommend.

Review: This is another awesome book by Terry Brooks.. This whole series really works with your imagination.

Summary: Don't Compare It To Anything....Just Enjoy!
Review: Terry Brooks' 'Sword of Shannara' is an epic fantasy work that deserves to stand on its own without comparisons to Tolkien or anyone else. Brooks' first novel was a major hit when it first appeared in the late 70's. It even made the New York Times Bestseller list, which was very rare in those days for a fantasy novel. The reason why it made the list and is still read widely today is simple. It's an exciting, thrilling adventure that's well written.

Shea Ormsford is a boy from a quiet village where not much ever happens. Shea doubts he will ever leave the village, but things change when a mysterious traveller named Allanon arrives and meets young Shea. An evil has come to the village and Shea soon realizes that it is in his power to stop it....if he lives long enough.

'Sword of Shannara' is a delightful story that mainly appeals to teenagers, but lots of adults enjoy it as well. A treat for the imagination, 'Sword' contains lots of action, adventure, and strange creatures. If you are a fantasy fan and have never read 'Sword,' you won't want to miss this one. If you've never read a good fantasy yarn, this is a great place to start. Sequels abound, but the second book 'Elfstones of Shannara' is the only one worth your time.

Summary: A must read.
Review: If you are a fan of the fantasy genre, and you must be if you are reading this review then read The Sword of Shannara. It is a classic fantasy tale. It doesn't trick or surprise you but the characters are fun to root for and the story flows nicely. Terry Brooks is an excellent fantasy author.

Summary: Half-elves, Druids, Gnomes, Dwarves & Elves, Oh My!
Review: By the time this review is made, well over 200 people have already put in their two cents on this book. I won't gripe about it being a Tolkein knock-off. It is, but Tolkein's work should be imitated. I won't gripe about it being in the typical "quest to save the world against incredible odds" format. It is, but it makes for good entertainment.

My take on this genre of literature is that it should be judged on the basis of whether it captures the reader and brings him/her into another world, if only for a short time. This book does just that.

Brooks develops the characters quite well. The battle scenes are magnificently wrought. Lastly, Brooks has a great skill for weaving four to five story lines together. Not one of the story lines is boring. In fact, each one made me hope that Brooks would dwell just a bit longer on that story before shifting to one of the others.

In short, this is a fine example of fantasy literature, and I recommend it to all.
