Summary: The Best Book I Have Ever Read, so far!
Review: People say that this book is boring at the start, but I found it interesting the whole way through. The book is very imaginative, and do not worry if you do not always understand what they are talking when they refer to 'dust', it will become more clear towards the end. After reading the book I am sure you will want to read the next in the series, 'The Subtle Knife'.

Please note: If purchasing abroad you may find that, 'The Golden Compass' is titled 'Northern Lights' instead.

Summary: The Golden Compass
Review: This is a beautifully written book. It is the best book I've ever read. I loved the Harry Potter Series so I came to ( ) to look for books like it. The Golden Compass popped up so I decided to buy it. It was great from the beginning. The idea of daemons is so cool. I'm on the third of the series and I wish it was a longer series(hint hint)!

Summary: NOT for children, excellent book.
Review: Like this book needs another review! But I think one more cautionary comment regarding the grim atmosphere is warrented. I grabbed it from the children's section of the book store. This story is heart breaking in its treatment of children. Not what I expected!

Once I got past the slow start, I couldn't put it down. I also compared it to "Chronicles of Narnia", sort of a dark, cynical response to C.S. Lewis' view of the Church. Also, there's a scene in Lewis' "Great Divorce" (I think) where the angels slice off *demons* that have attached themselves to the newly deceased arrivals in heaven. An interesting connection, I think.

Pullman is an excellent writer. One grammatical error I noticed through out, though! He says so-and-so will "try and do" such-and-such, which implies two different actions. The correct phrasing is "try TO do". Nit picking, I know.

Summary: One of the best
Review: The Golden Compass is one of the best books I've ever read. It tells a tale of a young girl (Lyra) who goes through adventorus journeys to the North. She meets a variety of people (if that's what you'd call them) from witches to polar bears to kidnappers (or Gobblers). She befriends some people and makes enemies out of others. As she journeys into the North she learns some secrets about her life that shocks her very bones. From starting out in Oxford and landing in the North it turns into quite a story and I hope you read it!

Summary: James's Review
Review: I'm not going to tell you what it is about because there are other reviews to tell you that. I'm going to tell you how good it is. I read books this size and they take me about 3 weeks. This one took about 7. It is so boring at the beginning and slow starting. But once you get too about page 250 (lucky I had nothing else to read) it gets so exciting it is impossible do anything but read it. I forced other people to read it by taking away the books they're reading and not give them back to the people until they've finished Northern Lights (which is what it is called here) and by the time they've finished they don't want to read the book I hid from them. His Dark Materials is a fantastic series with avery slow start an exciting middle and a tragic, heart-pounding adrenaline-pumping end.

Summary: YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK!!!
Review: Last week, there was a book burning sponsored by a church in the United States. Among other things consumed were some Harry Potter books. Well, I think that if the Dark Materials trilogy had the same level of popularity as the Harry Potter series (and I think it much deserves it), then The Golden Compass, etc. would be more likely than Harry Potter to show up in any book burning.

These books are deep. They deal with mystery, adventure, sadness, energy and delight, growing up, life and death, moral ambiguity, betrayal, destiny, power, elementary particles, the Church, and much more. It all adds up to the most purely fun (and emotionally evocative) read I have found in a long while, maybe ever.

Summary: This book rocks!!!!
Review: I had never read a book by Philip Pullman before this one. At first it was kind of boring and I didn't think I'd get into it, but then it got exciting and all those synonyms of exciting.

Summary: Fine if you are under 18...
Review: What can I say: the characters were flat and the story linear. There was just no depth to it, and after all the hype I was very disappointed.

Summary: A great book for teenagers and adults of all ages
Review: This is just a recommendation. I really enjoyed the book and ever since have wanted a daemon of my own. If you enjoy good quality fantasy novels this is well worth a look.

Summary: Excelente!
Review: I did the all time no-no of book reading: judging the book by it's cover. I was short on time at the library and the book I wanted wasn't in, so I grabbed a book with an interesting cover and proceeded to read. And it was awesome! The book was better than the cover! The reader can really relate to Lyra and her pain and struggles. You cry, laugh, and plot along with her. I would recommend this book to anyone.
