Rating: Summary: Not since Tolkien.. Review: Not since I first read the Lord of the Rings so many years ago have I been so deeply immersed in a fantasy world. Pern, with its complex characters, rich, diverse culture and its wonderful dragons comes more to life with each page. Its mix of science fiction, fantasy and medieval culture make the Pern novels unlike most popular fiction. The heroes must take on challenges both from space and from within their own society. These books are required rading for any fantasy fan.
Rating: Summary: A powerful character rises from nothing to reclaim her life. Review: Rising from the lowest ranks of the weyr, Lessa attempted to reclaim her birthright, the now run down Ruatha Hold. F'lar prevents this by claiming the young girl for search, brinning her back to Benden Weyr to stand for impression. And not just for any egg, for the queen. She nervously stands and impresses the gold. Instead of claiming Ruatha Hold, Lessa of Ruatha is now Lessa, rider of gold Ramoth, Weyrwoman of Benden Weyr. McCaffrey's characters in Dragonflight each exemplify a quality that each of us desires in some way or another. Lessa personifies ambition and bravery. F'lar and the others force her into new situations and she succeeds at each one, better than anyone expects her to. She braved the first onslaught of thread in hundreds of years and fought traditions that had been upheld for years. And succeeded in each. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of science fiction, fantasy, or someone who just loves a wonderful story. Dragonflight is a wonderful book for any age.
Rating: Summary: The Best Fantasy Fiction Story Ever! Review: This book started it all! Anne McCaffrey brings to life characters so rich and deep that you will find yourself expecting to meet them as you walk down the street. You will laugh and cry with Lessa and F'lar as they, along with their magnificent Dragons, struggle to bring the citizens of Pern together to face the ancient threat of Thread, which is capable of destroying all organic material. You will cheer with them as they succeed in meeting Thread on time and destroying it mid-air. Journey through a beautiful time on a beautiful planet. Ride on your dragon along side the heros and lose yourself in the wonderful world of Pern. You will find yourself thanking Anne McCaffrey for her wonderful imagination!
Rating: Summary: Dragonflight is an exciting book. Review: Basically, the book is about the Dragons of Pern, where Thread falls. For 400 Turns preceding this, there has been no Threadfall and people do not believe that it even exists any more. We learn this through the eyes of Lessa, a woman who has ceded her right to be Lord of Ruatha Hold. She Impresses a queen dragon, Ramoth, and makes Mnementh's rider F'lar Weyrleader. He prepares the Weyr for Threadfall. Sure enough, Thread does fall and F'lar is justified. I found this exciting and suspenseful, and full of the magic of Pern.
Rating: Summary: The book that started one of the finest sci-fi series ever. Review: Well this is the one. The one that started it all. I first read this book when i was in high school, and thanks to this book and the others in the series i soon became an avid reader. Not of just sci-fi/fantasy but of all genres. I liked the series so much that i went out and bought all the books. It took me a while to find them (years) but in the process i have built up my own private library of over 700 books. Though the shining star series of my collection is the Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey. Thanks to her writing i turned to reading instead of other less appropriate activities.... I hope everyone else has enjoyed these book as much as I, and I eagerly await each new installment to the series.
Rating: Summary: Challenge for the Narnia Chronicles? Review: I had stumbled on to this webpage and will be ordering my very own copy on the weekend. I love these type of "medieval" settings, Dragonflight sounds like the spoiler. Stay tuned.
Rating: Summary: This book is like nothing else... Review: I loved this book. I read it over and over. I can't wait until Christmas when I can get anouther of her books. This book makes me wish there was such a thing as mind to mind talking. I recomend this book to one and all or are you to hidebound?
Rating: Summary: I love Anne McCaffrey's style Review: She makes you want to live on Pern and abandon Earth. Go on a "flight" of fancy with graceful dragon wings and leave the world behind. Please keep writing . We love your books.
Rating: Summary: A World of Dragons Review: The Pern books are one of the best stories out there. This first book in the wonderful series takes you to adventure and danger from the skies, all from a top a Dragon. Not just a typical fantasy story, Dragonflight is a journrey through time and space. The read for any century.
Rating: Summary: Pern is Real - Go There! Review: Anne McCaffrey has created a truely magical world, filled with a richness that rivals Tolken`s and Donaldson`s. One has only to open the pages of this wonderous book to be transported to a world that few would willingly leave. This is but the first of a (wishfully) unending series that is sure to keep readers begging for more.
