Rating: Summary: My first Sci Fi book, & 20 yrs later, still my Favorite!! Review: Dragonflight is simply the best book I have ever read! The world and it's people are so fully realized that it's hard to believe that Pern doesn't really exist. When other girls had crushes on singers and movie stars, I fell for F'lar! I didn't want a horse--I wanted a gold dragon! All of McCaffrey's books are spectacular, but this one will always hold a special place in my heart. Read this book--you won't be sorry.
Rating: Summary: user-unfriendliness of the tapes Review: My daughter adores the Pern books and when she saw the opportunity to purchase an audio book so she could listen at will, she jumped at the opportunity. To her chagrin, she discovered that the tapes did not play on her bedroom radio. The explanation was simply that in order to produce an inexpensive tape the cassette were double recorded and a balance mechanism was necessary on the playing device. We could purchase and adapter (which defeats the inexpensive idea) and then use headphones to play the tapes or use our expensive equipment which is located in our living room to play her tapes. Both of these solutions were unacceptable because her interest was to be able to play the tapes wherever and whenever without regard to the high quality of the components. Therefore, we decided to return these cassettes and continue to rely on cassettes from the library until we can locate a source which manufactures userfriendly cassettes
Rating: Summary: Love this one! Review: This book is one of My favorites by Anne McCaffrey. I especially like the way she wrote it:) My favorite parts was when the watch-weyr gave it's life to protect Lessa and then later on when F'lar has the dragonriders make hostages of the ladys when the lords came to the weyr.
Rating: Summary: dragons, dragons, everywhere, first here now(blink) there!!! Review: The Dragon riders of Pern, I just can not say enough about this series. Since I read the first story (This one) I've been hooked, I searched through all the used book stores in my town and the next until I had every last one from this series, and most of the others, Then I spent the next two weeks reading them, it was so hard to put each one down, only to rush through the day to get back to the story,There are not enough to cure me of this reading daydream, I hope there are more to come, Anne mcCaffery must be a genius, or has the strength of Lessa,to brighten each new page with the woven spell of her undeniable style and flair for the unique and unconventional, the characters shine with her inner beauty, wisdom for life. Any title by this brilliant author would be worth the time and the money, since money really plays no roll in pern, but togetherness, friendship, love and trust, help pern to survive misery and heartache. Buy this book, what a movie in your mind. wish this was a movie.
Rating: Summary: One of the greatest books ever!!! Review: It was one of the best books I've ever read and I've read hundreds ( literally HUNDREDS) of books. Stephen King, Robert Jordan, David Eddings, Madeleine L'Engle... I've read 'em all. She brings her world to LIFE. The people act like real people might. If you like science fiction or fantasy fiction or whatever you want to call it you'll LOVE this book. Even if you don't like these types of books you may still like THIS one. Take my advice and check it out from a library if you don't want to buy it. If you do read it I hope you enjoy it...
Rating: Summary: A "MUST READ" over and over Review: Finally, a heorine who has the strength of her mind and will to lead us through a storey full of adventure and pagentry. Lessa is the kind of mentor many young people, not just girls, need today. She is strong of will but able to listen and understand what needs to be done for the greater good. I've read the series of Pern books over and over and never tire of the stories.
Rating: Summary: A good read! McCafferey really lets you know the characters. Review: I started to read the book as a report book. I got so ensconced that when I did my report a week later, I still remembered all of the best parts and the characters. McCafferey really lets you know the characters. I liked the book so much I went out and got the sequel and read it. It is called Dragonquest. It was great, too. Sometimes I had lots of homework because I spent all of my time reading!
Rating: Summary: Thrilling to the point of no return. Review: This was the first time that I had ever read these books, and now I'm hooked. Never boring and never completely dies. Once here never look back to where you were from. Your now part of the planet Pern.
Rating: Summary: The story was great! It's defintely "read more than once"! Review: To follow Lessa from drudgery in a Hold kitchen to her rise as the most influential woman on Pern was thrilling. The interweaving themes and unimaginable perils make you want the story to go on and on!
Rating: Summary: At last a sci-fi heroine who's a force to be reckoned with! Review: OK, from the start, as the sci-fi heroine of the Sixties (who else was there? Scantily clad babes in space from Star Trek?), make way for Lessa, a bright, spirited woman who saves herself and then her world in their time of greatest need. F'lar, our dashing hero...he starts out as something of a strong-jawed, imperturbable, business-like archetype, but his character developes as the story does and these traits actually become character quirks as he does emerge completely three-dimensional and fully realized. And those dragons! Oh, for a dragon of my own! Fighting Thread would not be too great a price to pay if I could have one. Imagine a built-in soul mate, a creature who is forever connected to you in a bond of devotion and love. As for the story itself...if you really examine it, you realize that our heroine's dramatic course of actions are not entirely necessary, however exciting. But the beauty of this book is, YOU DON'T CARE! McCaffrey's prose, her characters, and above all, her wonderful way of bringing an alien world straight into your heart render such trivial matters entirely inconsequential. Read this book!!!
