Summary: If this is Science Fiction, I want more!
Review: I am entering the world of science fiction reading as an adult, and Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead have provided a challenging, inspiring entryway. My stereotypes about SF have been shattererd--while Ender's Game had the action I expected, it also had more brains and heart. I applaud OSC's skill in continuing Ender's story into adulthood. I wanted to know more about Ender after the first book. Due to his obsessive military training he had little chance to interact with other people. Here we see him as he's evolved into his role as speaker for the dead. I was amazed by the complex combination of character relationships, religion and philosophy, and cross-cultural issues that Card successfully weaves together. This book is challenging, and well worth the effort.

Summary: Loved it!
Review: This is the second Orson Scott Card novel I've read; I read it to find out if I like his work or not. The first novel that I read (The Treasure Box) was so fantastically weird that I immediately went to the library to find more. I started reading it last night about 9:00. Bad call, since I stayed up until 12:30 to finish it. I was impressed with his characterization. The people and piggies in the book were so real to me that they haunted my dreams, only fragments of which I still remember. By the way, I've decided that I like his books, and plan to read more!

Summary: People can say whatever they want . . .
Review: Unless they agree that this book is awesome they're wrong. Speaker was a little slow in the beginning because I had no idea to to pronounce the Portugeuse names and because I was wondering what had happened to Ender. But believe me it picks up and it's JUST AS GOOD AS THE FIRST. 'Nuff said.

Summary: Great book!!
Review: After reading Ender's Game, I was a little suprised. Speaker took a slightly wider world view. In Ender everything focused completly and soley on Ender. In Speaker, the view paned out and evcompased Valentine, and Novhina, and the other inhabitants of Luistania. The delima woth the Piggies ws handled well, and Card did an exelent job portraying the moral dilema's within all of the characters (as usual). I would recomed this book to any SF reader and definately all Card finatics.

Summary: This book was BORING.
Review: I loved Ender's Game but this book was just too boring. The first time I started reading Speaker for the Dead I didn't even finish it. The second time I read the whole book and I was sorry afterwards because it nearly spoiled the effect that Orson Scott Card had made on me with the first book. If you haven't read Ender's Game don't even think about reading this one because you will be dissapointed, and you won't understand the plot.

Summary: Speaker for the Dead-fabulous and even better than the first
Review: I recently read Ender's game followed by Speaker for the Dead. I found Card to better himself in an even nore brilliant than Ender's game. It broadens the relationships between Ender and those he interacts with and even establishes more relationships. The tradgedy occurs not only to Ender but to others. What Novihna and her family go through is tougher than what Ender goes through. I feel strong bonds with Pipo, Libo, and Milo than with Alai or Bean. Ender's game seems to appeal to children and how can children be that brilliant(not only Ender). In Speaker the characters have flaws and are not intended to be brilliant. Anyway I'm just blabbing. I felt more emotion in Speaker than in Ender and Card was was strong in explaining Scientific terms and knowledge. Thank you Card for giving me a better sequel and I hope (contridicatory to what was said of Speaker for the Dead as a sequel) that Xenocide is even better.

Summary: Slow to start, but impossible to put down later
Review: I didn't like it that much at first, but the second half really picked up. Then it gets REALLY good. Much better than Ender's Game, and the 2nd best in the entire Ender Quartet (second to Xenocide)

Summary: The BEST book ever
Review: To put it simply, I have never read a better book than Speaker for the Dead. I was lying on the floor in my room, my head on my pillow, the book in my hands. When I turned to the last page and completed reading, I rolled over, stared at the ceiling and said, "Wow." I was amazed at how effectively this book got its point across and got me to re-examine myself and my values.

Summary: No OSC it is not your best
Review: No, Orson, it is not your best book. It is perhaps your most religious book. It is certainly your most "preachy" work that I have read. I would liken it somewhat to the Scarlett letter. It beats you over the head with its symbolism. Nothing is left to the imagination, and there is no intriguing plot -- only symbolism. Ender's Game and Treason (suprisingly enough) are far better.

Summary: Great book for Sci-Fi Newcomers
Review: Before reading Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead, my interest in Science Fiction was limited to your basic Star Trek storylines. When I read the first few pages of both books, I was hooked. The writing style, the plot, everything was great!
Speaker for the Dead really captivated me because it was more philosophical and alot like the social science issues I've studied.I think anthropologists, political scientists, and others could really relate to this book and get into science fiction. The ideas and concepts are brilliant, and Card's words just flow. It should certainly be a part of high school and college learning materials!
