Rating: Summary: The End of the World!!! Review: After reading everything I could find by Neil Gaiman, a bookseller suggested this book -- he said it was hilarious, and he was right! What a joy to read! This story was a delightful relief, an escape from the 6 o'clock news where the line between the good guys and the bad guys is presented as having a crisp black and white line (no matter what side you're on, "They" are 100% Evil, and "We" are 100% Good.) In this story, the division is not that pristine. Armageddon and the end of the human race is supposed to be underway on Saturday -- but everything's been a bit mixed up because eleven years ago, the Antichrist was accidentally switched at birth by one of the Sisters from the Chattering Order. The young Lord to Be of the Underworld was supposed to have been named Warlock, and raised by an American ambassador. Instead, he's just a country boy, riding his bicycle with his three good friends and faithful hound (a downsized dog from you-know-where), living a rather wholesome life in the small village of Tadfield, with no properly evil training. Long time arch rivals and good friends Crowley and Aziraphale will be in deep trouble with the Devil and God, their respective bosses, unless they find the missing child. These two oddfellows have mixed feelings about the ending of the earthly world -- they've come to like the human race, and have found earthly things they will sorely miss -- things you can't get in Heaven or the Underworld! So, get this book and go with them as they frantically search for the missing leader of the end of the world, while the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse approach on their Harleys. Try to sort out the good guys from the bad guys. Newton Pulsifer, the scientific minded descendant of the main witchfinder who centuries ago burned the last real witch and prophetess Agnes Nutter is about to meet Anathema Device, Agnes's descendant, a young occultist. They are both moving toward Tadfield to destroy or support the only living person who can save the human race from absolute destruction. Who will find whom, when, where and how? And will good triumph over evil -- or is there a bit of good in even the nicest earthbound angel, and a touch of good in the most evil demon on earth? An irreverent, witty, charmingly twisted view of that eternal battle between good and evil. Now I'll have to start reading books by Terry Pratchett, too!
Rating: Summary: An outstanding work of comedy! Review: I love this book! I re-read it every year or so. I've never seen such a giddy-paced or tight comedy. Every so often, just to show you they can, the authors throw in a zinger (as in their discussion of how old the Earth is, a dry essay which ends with "This also proves that the Earth is a Libra"). The writing is for the most part easy to follow with careful reading, with an interesting assortment of characters. The book is a fast read, which isn't so great because at the end, I wanted WAY more. The religious theories espoused here won't deeply offend anybody, I don't think (they're pretty absurd, on the whole), but they *will* make one think. I was Pentecostal when I first found "Good Omens", and while I cannot claim it is wholly responsible for my unconversion, it gave me quite a bit of food for thought. I really couldn't find any holes in their logic. They start with a fairly tight premise and roll on from there. There are neat little touches that make perfect sense (like demons having the same wings angels have, "except better groomed"). I do hope these authors collaborate again, if not on "Good Omens" related works then somewhere. They're clearly a force to be reckoned with.
Rating: Summary: Insightful and humerous Review: This is one of the better books I have had the pleasure to read. The characters bring the philosophical concepts of religious and historical beliefs into a different light. The only part of the book that slows the reader down is "young Adam." I wish these two great writers would have done something different with that. Other than that, I will and have most certainly recommended this book. Not only is it hilarious, but it does offer, and even forces, the reader to think about established teachings and ideas.
Rating: Summary: Brillian and hilarious Review: The Apocalypse and the Antichrist might not seem like fruitful topics for a comedy, but this book succeeds in making them just that. The devils have the wrong antichrist, the snake from the garden and his opposite don't really want the world to end, and the Four Horsemen ride motorcycles. Absolutely hilarious, and rumor is that Terry Gillian may soon be directing a film adaptation. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious Review: Everyone else has already said it, but I'll say it again. This book was hysterical. I couldn't put it down and I couldn't stop laughing. It's kind of a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Armageddon. The conversations between Aziraphale and Crowley, the THEM, the other 4 bikers of the Apocalypse. There are so many things that make this book what it is. Neil and terry make an incredible team.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant Comedy Review: Writeing a laugh out loud book thats not out right silly is no easy task but Neil Gaiman and Tery Pratchet succede in just that with Good Omens. Though the subject matter may be sacred the humor is light and fun instead of being offencive as most comedies dealing with cristianity tend to be. I recomend this book to anyone looking for a fun read that will leave you feeling a little better about the universe than you did when you started.
Rating: Summary: Good Omens Bodes Well Review: Wonderful book. I'd been a Gaiman fan for a long time when I found this gem. If you've ever wondered what happens Good and Evil talk shop in a pub, this is a book for you. Carries things off to absurdist conclusions and I can't recommend it enough, especially if you've enjoyed smart satires from Joseph Heller or Kurt Vonnegut.
Rating: Summary: One of my all-time favorites Review: This is one of my all-time favorite books. Hilariously funny, it tells the story of the Anti-Christ (totally spoofing "The Omen") except Heaven and Hell screw up and lose track of him. They start watching the wrong kid, while off in a different town, the Anti-Christ is happily growing up a normal little boy. The Apocalypse is coming, and by the time the Powers That Be (in the form of an angel and a demon--who, by the way, are friends) realize their mistake, they rush off to fix it, only to get in more and more trouble. A wonderful, wonderful book.
Rating: Summary: Witty, humorous, but BORING. Review: Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors... i LOVED "Neverwhere," "Stardust," & "American Gods." But i just recently decided to read "Good Omens," one of Gaiman's older works. It is a witty, humorous version of the apocalypse. I appreciate Gaiman & Pratchett's knowledge and creative attempt at the subject... However the book is very long-winded and hard to get through... And watch out Americans, you may not get some of the British humor... i think i missed some of it.
Rating: Summary: You must read this book! Review: I just recommended this book to a friend and thought that this would be a good time to write a review for it. This is one of my all-time favorite books. Ever. Ever-ever!! I own every copy of The Sandman (the comic book written by Neil Gaiman) and several of his books. I own every Discworld book written by Terry Pratchett. It is actually because of Good Omens that I became a Terry Pratchett fan and started reading the Discworld series. I was already a Neil Gaiman fan when I read this. Neil Gaiman is extremely knowledgeable about mythology, religion (depending on your point of view this could also fall into mythology), and history. His humor is dark and twisted...just the way I like it. Terry Pratchett is also extremely knowledgeable about mythology and history. His art is social commentary disguised as comic fantasy. His humor is twisted, but usually not so dark. I kind of think that if he had ever taken to the stage, he would do vaudeville. At any rate, I don't know who had the idea for these two to collaborate...but it was pure genius. I never stopped laughing the entire way through this book. I've recommended this book to dozens of friends and have frequently loaned my copy out. They usually end up buying a copy of their own. It's just a book you want to read again and again. Speaking of which...I think it's time for me to do just that.
