Rating: Summary: Very funny book Review: What a great zany comedy. Those familiar with the book of Revelations will appreciate many of the in-jokes. Famine is a corporate businessman that sells synthetic food that tastes the same but kills people through obesity And malnutrition. War is a war correspondent that always appears to be the first on the scene to report a skirmish. Pollution is, well, a dirty person that litters a lot. Death is the Fourth, and he is never seen without his dark-visored motorcycle helmet on. Yes, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse-Famine, War, Pollution, and Death- are Hell's Angels. The plot circles around an antichrist (raised by a normal family because of a mix-up with satanist nuns), a witch-hunter (looking for excitement away from his mundane office work by looking at newspapers for triple-breasted occultists), a witch (No comment), and a not-too-good Angel and a not-too-bad demon that happen to be best friends. Together, they create a very funny (albeit a bit cliched, formulaic) screwball comedy. I like this book very much, with few yet compounding reservations. Douglas Adams' writing style is mimiced to the T, but y'know, try something different, guys. The main reason, however, that I didn't like this is, I admit, purely subjective. This is simply that I couldn't read this book without getting the shoddy aftertaste of Dogma, End of Days, Armageddon, or any other roaches I may have stepped on in 1999. If you want to read this book, wait until later. Wait until you forget.
Rating: Summary: a really great twist on the book of revalations Review: This book definatly ranks in the top five most entertaining books that I've ever read. It has an enjoyable cast of characters (Crowely being my personal favorite), a great plot, a morbid sense of humor, and most importantly luagh out loud hillarity. Most books that I read only ever make me chuckle, but this book actually made me cackle with laughter in some parts. I mean it honestly that it is extremely funny. This great sense of humor is brought about by the cast of characters constantly playing off of each other's personalities, and quirks. Plus there's the dead serious subject matter that the book deals with being portrayed in such an off-handed manner. It deffinatly leads to some great moments. This novel will keep you reading (i finished it in about three days). I you want a memorable book that will make you want to read it over and over again get this masterpeice, you won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: A very difficult book to keep! Review: "Good Omens" is without a doubt, one of the funniest books that I have ever read. My one pet peeve about it is that I loan it to people and then they REFUSE to give it back! I've bought this book 7 times, and have made six of my so-called friends delighted by donating it to them. Oh, well, it's a small price to pay for a few more people who have been introduced to this brilliant book. I will warn you, however, that if you aren't already laughing by the end of the first page, the humor involved is probably not for you. Much of the humor is writen in a throwaway style. Instead of hitting you over the head with a joke, the authors seem to prefer to state things in such a matter-of-fact tone that some of their best lines try to sidle right past you. By the way, even if you normally only read a book once, try and reread Agnus Nutter's predictions after you've finished the book. The misinterpretations made by years of her relatives are much more amusing when you really know what happens. Definitely buy this book, but be careful of loaning it out!
Rating: Summary: My favorite book Review: I discovered this book when I was in middle school and re-read it when I was in college. Now, years later, it's still one of my favorites. Tons of people have borrowed my battered copy. When they see me re-reading it (something I do at least once a year) and snickering over the jokes, they can't help but try it for themselves. I've never found anyone who didn't like it.
Rating: Summary: WHAT IF MONTY PYTHON DID THE APOCALYPSE? Review: This is a hilarious take on the end of the world (king james version). If you're a fan of 'Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy' or don't buy into the whole religion scene, this book is for you. There were times when I had to put the book down because I was too busy laughing out loud. But hurry and read this book, because the latest news is that Terry Gilliam is going to be directing the big screen movie version of this book. And if you don't know who Terry Gilliam is, then don't read this book. You will not like it. Of course, if you don't like this book, then you have the personality of a rock.
Rating: Summary: It should be "6" stars Review: This book is great! It's a satireical look at Armageddon. These two master story-tellers weave a tangled web of words that serve to entertain and baffle the reader. The characters are well rounded--you could see yourself sitting in London drinking tea with any and/or all of them. Terry Pratchett makes it a point to drop in his endless footnotes, poking fun at the nuances of British culture. If you like the works of either of these two, like (or don't like) the British, or just like a good "end of the world" story, this is one book that should be picked up, and not put down again until its been fully absorbed.
Rating: Summary: Witty and Intelligent Review: As a long-time cynic and a skeptic of organized religion, this book was a mind-blowing delight for me to read. When I was finished, I literally skipped around my house for a few minutes before sitting down and just savoring the information I had so recently devoured. Perhaps my only criticism of the tale is that the authors (Gaiman and Pratchett) have now said everything I've ever wanted to say about God and the Universe in general, and now I can't publish it in a witty, scathing book. The characters are well-defined, the interaction between Crowley and Aziraphale amusing. The story is fast-paced, managing to have a hundred things going on at once without confusing the reader. I would hope for it to be turned into a film, only that that medium could never do every word justice. A must read!
Rating: Summary: the only book I bought twice Review: I once lent this book to I don't remember who, never got it back - but I wasn't angry. I was actually GLAD that somebody else obviously loved it as much as I do. well, the thing is, everything has been said. I just read all the reviews, and was glad to see I'm not the only one who loved the horsepersons of the apocalypse. But I think old Agnes Nutter (witch), the delivery guy and Thou-shalt-not-commit-adultery Pulsifer deserve at least some honorary mention. I mean, all the characters are hilarious! Pratchett and Gaiman know where it's at! They answer fundamental questions, like ...what happens when a US-tv preacher actually meets a real archangel? ...how can answering machines help a fallen angel in his fight against the dukes of hell? ... who is responsible for Milton Keynes? ... what does the hellhound look like? ... what's the plan behind London transport? And for those who compare this to Douglas Adams' hitch-hikers series: you are clueless. I mean, you might as well state that Finnegan's Wake was inferior to Mickey Mouse, or that Bach's concertos don't quite live up to "Cats" . Good Omens has genuine esprit. Intellectuals can enjoy it. But my 86-year old, working class, staunchly catholic grandma enjoyed it, too. Try to beat that. So: read it! I once had the fortune to attend a lecture held by Terry Pratchett. That was before I read "Good Omens" (back then, I only knes his discworld books). If I ever meet him again, I'll buy him all the banana daiquiries he asks for.
Rating: Summary: my favorite gift Review: When I first read good omens, I finished it, put it down and picked it right back up to read again. The overall view the book took of the world and the people in it was so close to the truth it was almost painful. I make a point now to constantly keep it on my book shelf and whenever I meet someone new who would be able to appreciate it I give it away, and go buy a new one. I firmly believe it is the one book that anyone with a sense of humor should read.
Rating: Summary: Excellent read- Entertaining and intelligent Review: This book is great-very funny and entertaining, but also very intelligent in its criticism of religious beliefs. Has a humanist look at life. Highly recommended-read other reviews for plot summaries.
