Rating: Summary: Something different, nothing new Review: The book was a very good read...excellent subway material. I really hate to make the comparison between the book and Douglas Adams, as, aside from both being tongue-in-cheek, it's really like comparing apples and oranges...somewhat similiar, but completely different texture and taste. Mixing it together with Gaimen provides a book with the cheeky comments commonly experienced in Pratchett books with the odd characters common to Gaimen's tales...but - I must say - Pratchett retains the largest portion of flavor in the mix, in my opinion. The main thesis of the book seems to be that through it all, it's the journey and the challenge that means something - the rest is just a label...and doesn't mean anything. It provides a nice context and reflections on western religon - providing an eastern take within the western framework...something more and more common. But it provides something different, and worth a read.
Rating: Summary: I laughed so hard milk came out of my nose! Review: The premise is the end of the world, which, under normal circumstances should not be all that humorous. With Gaiman and Pratchett at the helm, however, these are not normal circumstances. This book almost could not fail since Gaiman and Pratchett are two of my favorite authors. This book has the interesting characters and dialog that I love about Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett's snappy wit (after all that he's written, how can he keep coming up with stuff that's so funny?!) I laughed out loud several times while reading Good Omens, something I've not done since reading Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I've read (and enjoyed) a lot of books by both authors, and I think that this book is better than either of them had written by themselves. Get it and read it! Just don't do it while drinking milk.
Rating: Summary: Funny but... Review: I must admit I never got to appreciate Pratchett: to me, he seems to try hard to be the Douglas Adams of the fantasy genre, thus failing to find his own voice. Then we have Gaiman, who is the writer I love the most in the world - but who can't seem to be any good at writing novels as wonderful as his short stories or comics. (Note: this means his novels are just great, with Stardust possibly Most Great). Put the two together, and you get a very clever but basically "normal" humorous fantasy book. A few parts of it are very very nice, that's true, but it's basically "Two nice guy doing Douglas Adams goes esoteric". If you want to laugh with Pratchett try "Mort"; if you want to be amazed by Gaiman get "Stardust" and if you want to really understand what a lousy writer you are, go for "Smoke and Mirrors" by Gaiman. Unsurpassable.
Rating: Summary: What can I say? Review: I've nothing profound to say here: this is, quite simply, my favorite book. Not my favorite British book, or my favorite fantasy book, or my favorite Gaiman/Pratchett book. Just... my favorite book. In the universe. There are absolutely no drawbacks to this book. Am I making myself clear? Also makes a sure-fire Christmas gift. (I don't bother lending mine to people, my copy is signed. For which I waited -- willingly and merrily -- in a six-hour line on two separate occasions in two different countries. And may I add, both authors are kind, delightful, and down to earth in person.) [Aside: I'm not quite sure I agree with all the comparisons to Douglas Adams, though I do love (and miss!!!) Adams -- I find that all three have a distinctly British humor -- that characteristic deadpan understatement and irony -- which is fine but not really profound as far as similarities go, as they *are* all British. Also, I'm pretty sure Pratchett predates Adams by quite a bit -- he is older than Adams was, and began publishing at age 13.] I've had a lot of fun trying to decipher which bits are Terry's and which are Neil's. :-) The end result is so seamless. It's hilarious and heartbreaking (often simultaneously) and affirms the worth of humanity (even to those cynics like myself who might sometimes question it). Can you ask for more? This book is what the movie "DOGMA" *wishes* it could even begin to approach. These guys are couple of geniuses who should be long remembered.
Rating: Summary: Its all just so... so... ineffable Review: How can you go wrong with the demon who designed the M25 and the angel who felt bad enough for Adam and Eve to give them his flaming sword? As a winning combination of wit, style and thouroughbred insanity, this romp through and beyond Armageddon had me grinning like Crowley and guarding my copy as Aziraphale would his own (first ed. mint of course!) Regular secret agents these two aren't but they sure do get to have more fun! (plus Crowley gets the flash car!) read Good Omens if you don't mind crippling stitches in your sides and, in the odd parts, a new way of thinking about life and how we mortals live it.
Rating: Summary: Funniest Book You'll Ever Read Review: I loved this book. It gets better each time I read it! I have trouble getting it back once I loan it to people, so I've bought it 4 times so far. The one copy that'll never be loaned out is the one I was lucky enough to have Neil Gaiman sign. There are rumors of a movie directed by Terry Gilliam and I really hope it happens. This book is outstandingly funny. The story of a demon and an angel who've been on Earth so long that they've actually begun to like Humans - and each other. Who could blame them for misplacing the Anti-Christ...
Rating: Summary: Good Omens: Great Fun Review: From the first to the last page of this book, you will find yourself laughing out loud. The cast of characters is eccentric. You have "Adam (An Antichrist)", "Aziraphale (An angel, and part-time rare book dealer)", "Crowly (An Angel who did not so much Fall as Saunter Vaguely Downwards.)", "Dog (Satanical hellhound and cat-worrier)" and so much more! Good Omens, by the talented Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett is a book to tickle that funny bone and make you think. If you've liked The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, you'll love this!
Rating: Summary: Brilliant humor, masterful storytelling Review: This is the funniest book I've ever read. Period. Nothing better. Hitchhiker's guide is great. I love the Princess Bridge. There's lots of others. But they don't touch this book. Neil Gaiman is one of our best storytellers. Pratchet has a handle on Adams' style humor. Together they've created the single most insightful, intelligent and hilarious take on Armageddon out there. My ribs hurt after reading this book. In the good way. This book should be the cure for suicidal tendicies. You can't hate life after reading this book.
Rating: Summary: Forget the 'Left Behind' series... this is for real Review: Pratchett of Discworld fame and Sandman Gaiman team up to bring us Armageddon, and the Endtimes have never been so much fun before. The Antichrist has been misplaced by a Satanic Nun, and the forces of Good and Evil only find out four days before the Armageddon. All Hell breaks loose to find the Antichrist who grew up in a small English middle class family, and behold: the Antichrist isn't that evil at all. Angels, Demons, God, Satan and even the Four Horsemen (or Bikers) of the Apocalypse show up, and somehow they are a lot different from what our fundamentalist Christian friends imagined. Gaiman's wickedness adds a dark touch to the looniness of typical Pratchett humor, and every paragraph offers at least one laugh. The numerous footnotes are hilarious, too. So will Armageddon happen like Pratchett and Gaiman predict it? Who knows, but their vision offers a lot more heart, soul, fun and humor than the uptightness of the evangelical Left Behind novels, and that should be reason enough to purchase 'Good Omens'. More reason is of course the wackiness that will make you wet your undergarments.
Rating: Summary: Fast Paced Comedy Review: If you thought that by simply leaving Discworld Terry Pratchett's ability to make you laugh out loud would somehow change (Ok Ok, I know, but I thought it somehow would...or maybe I just didn't think about it and read this one on faith too), guess again! This story had me laughing out loud, to the consternation of family members who just don't get it, and that is Ok by me, because I have found a writer in whom I can trust when it comes to spending a moment in a world a little bit to the left of my own--or to the right...I don't know, I love him though!
