Rating: Summary: i actually thought a book was funny! Review: I like reading books but I never read them to make me laugh. I have TV or my friends to do that, however, this book made me laugh OUT LOUD! There were many subtle jokes that when I caught them, made me proud. ANyways, the book is full of plots and subplots that all seem to come together in the end...and then end is great, i loved it...it's worth waitin for
Rating: Summary: Gardening tips from an agent of the underworld Review: Excellent! Fabulous! A little Sinful... This book may not be for everyone, but for those who don't take life too seriously, dig right in! Here good vs. evil is just another day at the office, and the end of the world is just around the corner. This book is entertaining, witty, and intellectually stimulating. Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett play incredibly well off of one another, as do the agents of good and evil in this tale. Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: I laughed so hard, I cried. Review: Phenomenal book. I actually dropped it several times from laughing so hard. Two of my favorite authors in one book. It's a dream come true.
Rating: Summary: I still love this book, and Review: ... and I'd like to add something to my previous statment: If you hate a book, by all means it's your right to say so and why, but it's in general really unecessary to continue by insulting everyone who might have enjoyed the book. The focus should be commenting on the work, not on trying to denigrate people you don't know to make yourself seem cooler. Thanks, and happy reading.
Rating: Summary: Definitely worth several re-readings Review: This book is most likely one of Gaiman's finest works. No matter how many times you have read it, you can always come back and find something new. The story never grows old and the jokes are always amusing. One thing though, I would not recommend it to those who can't look at life lightly. It does have the capability of being offensive to some. This book looks at theology in a way that reminds me of Dogma by Kevin Smith. On the same subject, American Gods is another along the same lines. If you're the type of person who likes to find the humor in subjects most find serious, you'll love either of these books.
Rating: Summary: It was all written... well, almost. Review: Next week is the End of the World. But as Armageddon steadily approaches, as prophecied by Agnes Nutter the Witch, Aziraphale the Good Angel and Crowley the "Angel who did not so much Fall as Saunter Vaguely Downwards" are just starting to realize that maybe it isn't such a good idea.In the meantime, babies are swapped, the Witchfinder Army investigates and the Four Horsem- Bikers of the Apocalypse, Hell's Angels of course, along with the four other Bikers of the Apocalypse and the four teenage Cyclists of the Apocalyse all converge to Lower Tadfield in Southern England where it's all supposed to happen. With a plethora of characters, puns round every corner and hilarious footnotes, Good Omens is not only another version of Good vs. Evil, but is also a pure delight when it comes to train your zygomatics.
Rating: Summary: Nobody Wants Australia! (Kidding) Review: I can't believe that anyone could possibly give this book a bad reveiw! It has everything, humor, romance, humor, danger, humor, paintball, humor, ect. I loved it. I read it in one sitting (18 hours in an airport, don't ask). Beautiful, A-1 stuff, up there with Hitchhiker's Guide!
Rating: Summary: my favorite book ever Review: I've been a fan of Neil Gaiman and his comics for many many years. I first picked this book up in high school 8 years ago. Since then, I have made friends, family, teachers, and even strangers read this book. I've lost a few copies loaning it out and the one I have left is in terrible shape, but it's always worth it to hear "Thank you so much for introducing me to this author!" The story is engaging, the characters are very three dimensional, the pace is fast, and the dialog is witty. Fans of Neil Gaiman will be surprised by the lighter, funnier tone than they would expect from him, but his characteristic references to mythology and religious themes and his iconoclasm are in top form. I was unfamiliar with the work of Terry Pratchet, but I assume that he was the source of much of the humor. If you are a Gaiman fan or just a fan of good fantasy/gothic writing, you will love this book!
Rating: Summary: Hon wa kakkoi desu! Review: This books is without a doubt one of the best I have ever read. My beat up, been to hell and back copy resides beside my bed, in the place of honor. I loved it, in short. While at times the book moves slow, even those few chapters are thoroughly entertaining, and chock full of the mad humor that so often defines the British. The prose, such as it was, was smooth and rarely, if ever, impeded on the story telling aspect. The characters and settings were well developed, even the minor ones. None of the characters were so stupid as to be offensive. None of them were exceedingly bright, persay, but none were stupid. The dialogue between them was smooth and moved the story well.
Rating: Summary: Limbo, Limbo. How Lame can you go? Review: It may be that I read this book after finishing a truly funny one (Flashman). It may be that my world-view is not clouded by any religious hang-ups. It may be that I not only finished pre-K, but Kindergarten as well. Yet, I am afraid that the five-star-legion mistakes moronic silliness for humor. Reading this book gave me the feeling of reading the transcripts of the conversations between to guys spending too much time in a pub together. Good Omens contains approximately two thousands attempts at a joke, and maybe a total number of five successful hits. You would expect that these blokes that grew up on a diet of Catweezle, Monty Python, Are you being served, It ain't half hot Mum, Fawlty Towers, etc. etc., could have come up with something better than this. Oh dear, too bad, never mind. The only virtue of this book is that the scenes directly preceding the Apocalypse come close to being funny in a "Mel Brooks at his least inspired" way.
