Rating: Summary: a great book Review: Ender's Game is a great book because Orson Scott Card makes the characters actually belivable. Also he makes Ender grow in so many ways. The story is belivable as well, he makes the world in witch the people live very simalar to our time.
Rating: Summary: An average sci-fi book. Review: Ender's Game is, at best, an avergae sci-fi book. I do not understand those people who say it is the best book they have ever read, and I also don't understand the people who say that it is pointless non-intellectual drivel. After all the hype, I was expecting something truly exceptional, but instead I found overused plots and cliches. The plot was in no way attached to the themes of the rest of the book, which focused on the characters. And the characters weren't much to focus a book on. Ender was the hero who never wanted to hurt anyone, but cruel and manipulative society made him. To make up for it, he shows the truth about the buggers and begins a new cult. The writing was hideous, which detracted from the story a lot. The subplot in which innocent, easily manipulated Val and evil Peter take over the world is ridiculous. This is not classic sci-fi. If you think it is, try "Dune's" thoughtful examination of the mesiah myth, "Hyperion's" thoughts on the definition of a truly supreme being, or "Childood's End's" vivid and strangely beautiful picture of humanity's future.
Rating: Summary: A spiritually moving story. Review: A couple months ago I had this strange calling to read "Ender's Game". It had been a year since I had first read it. I almost went crazy trying to finesh the book I was on so I could read it. The first time I read it I started one evening and fineshed the book the next morning. I cried reading the soul wrenching 9th chapter. (Valentine and McGraff?)A lot of people think this book is very inaccurate with it's depiction of children, but I say it is not. A lot of adults don't think children can think or act like this, but I say they do. This book shows how people are at their deepest levels. It is amazingly and powerfully written. I think everyone should read this book. (Keep in mind when reading the "take over the world with use-net" parts that this story does take place in the future, not the present. Things could be drastically changed by then. Who knows...it could happen.)
Rating: Summary: A book that will always find a space on my bookshelf Review: My brother hates to read--he has dyslexia and it takes him forever to get through any book. And this in our family where everyone's favorite pasttime is visiting the local libraries. But one night he came into the living room where we were all sitting talking with a glow in his eyes. He said: You guys have got to read this book. It is amazing; I couldn't put it down!!! Well, any book that my brother could actually get through had to be worth reading, let alone one he "couldn't put down!" Every member of my family has read and loved this book. We are all huge OSC fans now. Even me, and I do not realy care for SF. I am waiting with bated breath for the movie!!!
Rating: Summary: Worth the read. Review: After working my way through the endless 10's in an attempt to find those 1's and 3's and see the reasons people gave them, I finally decided to respond. Ender's Game is, in one word, awesome. It has been over a year since I read it and I still remember almost every detail. That to me is a sign of how good it was. It has all the trappings of a great novel, in depth characters, an interesting plot, political and social overtones, and the ability to make the reader have to think. Throw into this mess some decent action and nifty sci-fi-esque gadgets and you've got one hell of a book. If you haven't read it, do so now. As for all those 1's and 3's based on the books so called lack of reality. It's a science FICTION novel. No, 6 yearolds aren't that smart...yet. But who knows, it's a big what if. No, we can't take over the planet via the Net yet, well after Microsoft who knows.. But the possibility is there. Use that wonderful gift we humans have, imagination. As for why the 9? It just physically hurts me to give something a 10. :)
Rating: Summary: What is wrong with these people?! Review: I can't understand how anybody could give Ender's Game a score of less than six. It is not unbelieveable as many have claimed, they simply must not have the imagination to comprehend it. A six year old behaving as Ender does is very possible. He has had his childhood stolen from him to save humanity. Look at the experiences he goes through. They aren't simply bad things, which would not neccesarily force him to grow up. He is forced to deal with the responsibility of an adult and he must become, in some ways, an adult to deal with it. And, forgive my bluntness, the person who said Ender was a "weenie" for letting the kids bully him at the beginning should simply be put up against a wall and shot! Ender's game is a masterpiece of humanity.
Rating: Summary: Intense from the first page thru the last. Review: This was the first non-Trek book I read in the sci-fi realm. I wasn't 2 pages in before I went out and bough myself a copy of this book (I was reading a borrowed copy). This book gripped me like no other had in the past, and certainly has maintained it's reputation throughout the times I've been reading sci-fi since. A young boy is taken from home & family, and trained via games, to help save Earth from an invasion/war with a species that the world fears and doesn't understand. As he ages, the games increase intensity and complexity, as one would expect. The thing is, he doesn't realize the real ramifications of the games. Not till the end. Even I wasn't expecting the end. I needed to re-read the last 25-30 pages again, becasue I was sure I'd missed something. That was not the case, Card just wove the plot so well, that I missed the subtlety of the ending. I'd recommend this book to ANYONE, and have recommended it to just about everyone I know! If it's not on your shelf, it SHOULD be!
Rating: Summary: It is simply the best sci-fi book that I have EVER read! Review: This book is just the best I finished it in a day. I also finished Xenocide and Speaker for the Dead in a day which is tough considering that I'm 12 and Xenocide is more than 500 pages. Orson Scott Card is the most Imaginative author that I know of. If you haven't read this book you haven't read. The idea about the battle room is amazing. He came up with the idea in high school. I have had an idea like that for awhile. I loved the ending. It was THE MOST CREATIVE ENDING I HAVE EVER READ IN A BOOK, EVER. The only reason that I gave this wonderful book a nine is that Card didn't explain some things, like what the Warsaw Pact was. READ IT.
Rating: Summary: THE BEST BOOK EVER WRITTEN!!! Review: Next to OSC's Hatrack River series, Ender's Game is the BEST thing since the printing press!!! I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE MOVIE!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Anyone who doesnot likethis book hasno understanding of life Review: This book is incredible. Forget all the "1"'s people give it. They Just don't understand it. But it's the truth, people either really like it or really hate it. I think it IS possible and children can think like that and this is an incredible book on philosophy and life and adventure. Read it! It is good for anyone. yes, it is about a boy, and there are almost no girls in it for us girls who are used to reading books about headstrong girls. But don't let that stop you! This is a great book! (Oh, and Val is an interesting girl charicter) I've read all of the Ender's Game series and thought they were all incredible. But this is my favorite. Read it. Good job, Orson Scott Card.
