Summary: Fun Romance about a Greek General Turned Love Slave
Review: FANTASY LOVER is silly fun. In one sentence, it's about a modern-day sex therapist who, as a joke, beckons forth gorgeous Julian of Macedon (the mortal son of Aphrodite) to serve her as a love slave - and when he actually appears, what she goes through to help him break the curse.

Yeah, it has some incredibly cheesy moments, but I liked those moments simply because I liked the book. I think it's the first romance I've ever read that had an Ancient Greek (or rather, Macedonian) hero and dealt with Greek mythology. That alone made it a worthwhile read (as opposed to the millions of cookie-cutter romances about the ton, pirates, Vikings, knights, Native Americans, etc.). I think the dopiest moments in FANTASY LOVER are when the modern-day heroine utters "Holy guacamole!" The best, however, revolve around Julian, the 2,000-year old general-turned-love-slave who is trapped by a curse to serve the women who summon him. He is, in turns, gorgeously wicked and painfully vulnerable. I loved how the author let us into his psyche (no pun intended), letting us see just how tormented and lonely he is. And just how much he loves Grace.

Grace was a good heroine. She is described as slightly unattractive, but she is so great to him that I never even noticed. When her looks were insulted, I was just as outraged as Julian. The author did a fantastic job of making Grace a most sympathetic, easy-to-relate-to heroine. I imagine her as someone I'd actually like to be friends with.

A couple of footnotes. FANTASY LOVER is apparently a "prologue" to the Dark-Hunter series, which I have never read. From the reviews, however, the books in the Dark-Hunter series are a lot better than FANTASY LOVER. This was good news for me, because I will definitely now begin reading the series.

And, yes, there are some bizarre plotlines and coincidences in FANTASY LOVER. The Greek gods also have no problem using American slang. And there is a serious obsession with sex in this book (Julian IS a love slave). But, you know what, I forgave all that (which, for the record, I rarely do - just see my review of KISS OF THE HIGHLANDER or some of Johanna Lindsey's books for proof). There was something about FANTASY LOVER that charmed me, regardless its problems. Maybe it was the writing style. Or the fun characters. Or the fact that it's about Greek gods. I don't know. I think you'll just have to read it and decide for yourself. Have fun! I did.

Summary: Not her best story, still a very good read
Review: I have read nearly all of her books in the Dark Hunter series and even though its not the type of book i normally read, i LOVED the series instantly. Because of how well written her other books are i bought this one. It was good, but not as good as the others. There were certain things in the book that i could have done without, such as the out-of-nowhere-nothing-to-do-with-the-story-stalker. And the ending left a little bit to be desired. But all in all it was a good story and i would recommend it as it does tie into the dark hunter series. I particularly liked the way she tied in Keiran.

Summary: Ms. Kenyon Wrote This Story Back in High School in 1988
Review: Uh, I should have known just from the title that this book was going to be ridiculous. However, first off, l will tell you what was good about this book. The hero is a Spartan Warrior. Awesome! Remember Brad Pitt as Achilles in "Troy"? I have not come across a book in this genre before that has as its hero and as part of its plot Greek mythology. I'm sure they're there, I just have not come across any.

Back to the point, Ms. Kenyon did not do the winning hero or the winning plot justice. I don't know if she plainly just isn't a good writer, or perhaps this was a bad item among her other and well written books. (I will do more research & read further from her, starting w/book 2 of this series.) When I was in high school, I thought myself a budding novelist and wrote these ridiculous, overly wordy (kind of like this review, eh?), fantastical and predictable stories. Fantasy Lover could have been one of mine from HIGH SCHOOL. The whole idea of Julian being this gigantic beefcake (he was totally described like Fabio & Fabio is so disgusting!) was just so over the top and ridiculous. Also, this book was printed in 2002 but there is barely any evidence within its pages of this fact. The only item dating it near the new millenium is the mention of "The Matrix". I believe this is a sign that Ms. Kenyon is out of touch with current/popular culture. Grace is 29, she a sex therapist, she owns her own house. But she is dowdy and sounds completely stuck in the early 90's. I appreciate authors like Sophie Kinsella who totally hit pop culture and relatively current fashion (but not TRENDY fashion) on the nose. Ms. Kenyon needs to do some research to get into the minds of conscientious young women. She could start by regularly reading young women periodicals, ie Glamour, In Style. I find it annoying when authors write about women my age who do not sound like any women I know. Any self-respecting 29 year old would drop dead before wearing their scrunchy in any other place other than the privacy of their own bathroom. And what was with the psycho patient? That whole part came completely out of nowhere and made no sense. The way it was thrown in the story completely stilted the flow.

Ms. Kenyon does not accurately portray women of a certain age. Her plot lines are only superficially developed, leaving gaping holes and questions in the minds of attentive readers.

Summary: Oh...My...God....
Review: First,a question: Where can I get my own Julian of Macedon? I want! Okay, now that I've let the hormones do the talking: the review.

This was an incredibly inspired and imaginitive book. I read it in about six hours, taking into account bathroom breaks and snack attacks, because I was so sucked in. I couldn't put it down.

Basically, Julian of Macedon is the son of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. After the murder of his family, his jealous brother cursed him into a scroll, that was later bound to become a book. The terms of his curse are that whenever a woman holds the book to her chest and calls his name three times under the light of a full moon, he is destined to be her full-time love slave until the next full moon.

Now, enter Grace Alexander: sex therapist who hasn't had sex in four years. For her 29th birthday, her friend buys her the book, hoping it will help her and her case of what Selene (the friend) refers to as Teflon panties. Grace doesn't believe it, but calls him anyway. And boy, does she get him.

Sherrylin does a good job of developing the story from there, showing how poorly Julian has been treated since being cursed, why Grace doesn't want sex, and the developing relationship between the two. It isn't always a happy story, and is even very painful at parts, but I'm sure you will love the book every bit as much as I did.

Happy Reading!

Summary: Not your typical romance - But I loved it !!
Review: My exposure to romance novels has been sparse, I just wasn't drawn to them too much. Somehow, I stumbled across this and wow, it was great! The snappy dialogue and humor really was fun as well as the overall premise. I hadn't heard of paranormal romance and I am enjoying it more as I explore the authors in this genre. Sherrilyn Kenyon writes with witty bantor and her use of mythology is fun as well. This isn't a "typical" romance novel, so dive in like I did and enjoy !!
