Rating: Summary: Factual , not hype Review: This book sticks with the facts, which in a case like this is what everyone unfamiliar with it needs to hear. You get the details and a feeling for the actual place as opposed to just imagining it and thinking of it as another horror movie. It is certainly nothing like hyped movies such as The Blair Witch, and the reader who suggested so obviously does not know enough about this case or the reality of it to those who experienced it. This book comes from a standpoint of careful review and documentation , letting the reader evaluate the events for themselves, and hopefully with an open mind.
Rating: Summary: Very disappointing book Review: This book was incredibly disappointing. Much of the book is wasted on tangents (history of the area, snapshots of abandoned buildings in the area). Even more is wasted on redundancies: Newspaper clippings are repeated, in different sizes. What could have taken one page is, in one instance, stretched out to four pages! Also, there are photos of handwritten notes, with the text of the notes on the next page. The essence of this book would have filled a book one-third the size (and price) of this book. In my opinion, this book was a complete waste of money.
Rating: Summary: Decent Review: This book was informative and interesting, but it only took me a few hours to read the entire thing. It probably should be noted that the book is written with about a 14point size font, so it should be categorized in "Large Print". It also becomes a little repetitive afterwhile, when they are just reviewing the same eyewitness account over and over again. Also, a large portion of the book is just scanned newspaper clippings of mothman or ufo sightings. Some are so small that they are hard to read, so you may need some proper reading spectacles. You can't help but to feel that the authors are just cashing in on the new "Mothman" craze while they can, and didn't put the kind of research into it that you might expect for twenty something dollars.
Rating: Summary: Mothman: The Facts Behind the Legend Review: This is NOT the Blair Witch all over again! This is a true story that occurred in Pt. Pleasant, WV. I know. I'm from this area and know the people who lived through this. When you hear their voices crack and see the terror in their eyes after 30 years, you know it was real. This book, as well as "The Mothman Prophecies" by John Keel will give you the real story, not the Hollywood hype.
Rating: Summary: DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY...one star is too high of a rating. Review: This is poorly written and poorly documented book which is little more than a sparce collection of newspaper clippings and handwritten accounts from 4 "eyewitnesses". Mothman's crowning glory is a mind numbingly boring interview with a woman who appears to be a paranoid schizophrenic. I can't believe someone published this.
Rating: Summary: Just what I've been searching for Review: What a treasure! This book is substantial. It is physically large (8.5 x 11 inches); it is easy to read, and I can tell that pains were taken to make sure the clippings were as legible as possible. There is quite a collection of clippings here -- these are from the original eyewitnesses, not the later eyewitnesses who were able to read these same clippings and THEN saw the Mothman. These are the first, and therefore render the other clippings and reports as secondary to what these first eyewitnesses saw. (Who cares what someone eight months later saw? If they got caught up in the hysteria surrounding the sightings, their testimonies would not be as pure as the first eyewitnesses -- they would be tainted with preconceptions!) I imagine it took quite a bit of work to compile this book; I showed it my brother-in-law, who works as a researcher for a publisher, and he felt it was quite a value for the price. I know how hard and tedious it is to do research, and here are the fruits of the labor of Wamsley and Sergent. I have read many accounts of the Mothman, especially from cryptozoologist authors, and I REALLY like this book for my permanent collection; I get easily bored with someone telling me "what to believe the Mothman was". I can think for myself; don't tell me what to believe, I don't need to be spoon-fed theories on what the original eyewitnesses saw. The authors did everyone a great service by keeping their opinions out of the mix. Lastly, how else am I going to have access to this information? I simply DO NOT have the time to research and compile this information; the authors have done it for me. Now everyone can share this information. I highly encourage the purchase of this book. You will not be disappointed!
Rating: Summary: I thought it would have more content.... Review: When I chose this particular book, I surpased the Mothman Prophecies by Keel, thinking this book would be better and with more info. All this is is articles from some people who saw it in 1966. Article after article, again stating the same comments over and over from the same people. I was very disappointed. Think next time I'll check out the book Mothman Prophecies book by Keel. There's GOT to be more info. out there....this book was a waste of money and I buy from Amazon bookstore quite often and for many years.
Rating: Summary: FASCINATING READING! Review: Whether one does or does not believe in alien forces, readers will likely enjoy this book for the interesting facts it contains on the Mothman. The authors present the book in this light, relying on the reader to come to their own conclusions about what or how much is fact versus fiction. The legend of the Mothman has been intriguing people since the first appearance in the 1960's. Depending on one's source of information, the physical discription of the Mothman varies from one report to another and may not actually match the one shown on the cover of this book. The book is quite short; however, it is worth reading. I understand this legend is soon to be released as a motion picture; however, in many cases, the actual story told throughout the pages of a book often surpasses the movie. In a book, one can conjure up their own speculative images of the characters which, personally, I prefer to do. This is an enlightening, fascinating read, particularly the newspaper articles found in the book; they are remarkably chilling.
Rating: Summary: This book is the one to buy Review: Why is it that some people cannot accept the truth? That some cannot see the forest for the trees? This is the coolest book available on Mothman, bar none. I like the fact that the authors include the information about the Point Pleasant and Mason County area, what another reviewer refers to as "tangents". My cousin is from Point Pleasant. We spent time rummaging through the TNT area that is described in the book. It is really creepy up there, and the thought of toxic chemicals in the ground makes your mind scream about the possibilities of just what is out there -- and what it does to the genetics of living things in the area. So that information, and the information about the terrible battle that took place in town, opens up the possibility of all sorts of explanations, including hauntings, government interference, chemical genetic alterations, and mass hysteria. The town itself is friendly and so are the people. They are not idiots, not running scared, and certainly not living in fear as some books by so-called "experts" portray them. My guess is that the friends of these experts are posting negative reviews about this book because it is so good. I praise this book for the following reasons: 1) It is large and easy to read. There are only so many ways you can present the clippings, and they are shown in small format (so that you can see the layout as it appeared in the newspaper) and then enlarged to read the details. Otherwise, the authors would have to package a magnifying glass with each book.... duh. 2) The authors refuse to let their own opinions get in the way. Obviously the reviewers that think the authors are hiding something or didn't tell everything are just looking to pick a fight, and they miss the point of this book by a mile. 3) That the authors are local men, not outsiders. 4) That the authors took the time to put this book together. I certainly might stop back in town next time I drive through, but I don't have time to spend a week's vacation tracking down all these clippings and compiling this information. So the fact that this has been done for me makes this book a tremendous value. Thank you, Jeff and Donnie! 5) That this book tells the story from the night the legend started, and I can see firsthand how all the legend grew and grew from a few scared kids into a movie that has little to do with the true story. Lastly, I notice some of the so-called expert reviewers either rate something with 5 stars or 1 star. How does that make you an expert? A must-have book for every collection. You may come to a conclusion different from everyone else... and you can thank the authors for that.
