Summary: David strikes again!!!
Review: Peter David (one of the best ST writers) scores again with an entirely new storyline with a new captain and new ship. He weaves the beginning of the story VERY well with existing elements from ST:TNG, and introduces the new characters without detracting from the action.... Only drawback -- it was only 160 pages... bring me more!!!

Summary: Intriguing....
Review: Peter David does it again. The book steps away from everything one got used to watching ST:TNG. First of all, the captain is a maverick. He has no love for Starfleet protocol. The crew is no doubt one of the stranges mixes of people possible. The book contains a fair amount of sexual content, which adds a little more spice to the experience. I read the books in a few hours without pausing, so this is definitely recommended lecture. Still, I found that "To be continued..." somewhat annoying. They should have waited and released the entire thing

Summary: Start of a superior series of books
Review: Peter David has created his own starship captain with some familiar faces in the crew. My favorite is Shelby from the episode "Best of Both Worlds". She had a relationship with the lead character, Mac. Now she's the first officer. Lots of exciting plot twists and we actually read about Jellio trying to bring them down in scandal....

Summary: Watch the house of cards topple
Review: Peter David has given Star Trek fans a whole new series of fun, fantasy and excitement. Some of the characters are new, but most are ones encountered before in the Next Generation series. Don't start reading this novel without the next 3 ready! You won't be able to put them down.

Summary: Excellent new series
Review: Peter David has incorporated the "old' with new characters spliced with gripping storylines and humor. I highly suggest this entire series to any trekker.

Summary: Outstanding beginning to a new Star Trek Series
Review: Peter David has succeeded in bringing a new Star Trek Saga into the family. The new characters are intruiging and yet somehow familiar ie.LT Selar. Also, the old characters are refreshingly and acurately portraid as we all know them from the ST:TNG series(Peter David has always been the best at maintaining Character personalities unlike other ST authors....). I'm looking forward to the series, my only dispariging comment was the mention Ambassador Spock made to Kirk as "I once knew a friend who would agree with you". This doesn't really follow the ST history since the massively popular storys of Kirks resurecction in William Shatners ongoing series of books. Star Trek could learn a good lesson from Star Wars & George Lucas about maintaining continuity in their Universe, (although any true Trekkie knows this is an ongoing problem of Star Trek Books and Movies relating to each other, going all the way back to the first mention of the USS Excelsior & its sucessfull and unsucessfull use of the transwarp drive......confusing eh?)However all general gripes aside this is an Excellent beginning to a new Saga in our beloved Star Trek Universe!!!

Summary: Creation of another great charactor for Star Trek Fans!
Review: Peter David has uniquely developed a new Captain to go where no one has gone before! Capt. Calhoun is a strong, bold and experianced commander who has now taken the reins of the USS Excalibur. With some old charactors from the Next Generation mixed in with the almost unbelieveable new charactors, makes this story the begining of the New Frontiers! It's an excelant story that makes your imagination go wild.

Summary: Review of New Frontier Book One:
Review: Peter David is, without question, the best author of Star Trek books there is. His "New Frontier" series looks like it will be a very enjoyable, very well-done series.

That being said, book one really wasn't one of his better efforts. (Granted, his "off day" is better than most writers' best, but still...) There are a couple of places where his language is a little clumsy, the first time I've ever seen that in his work, and this book is just a "setting the table" book, that doesn't really go anywhere, just prepares us for the following stories that presumably WILL accomplish something. Worst of all, it lets off on a cliffhanger ending, something that I despise and will almost always dock a book one star for.

However, the characters look fascinating, and as usual, David manages to write a fast-moving plot with no hint of the spoof to it (unlike, say, "How Much For Just The Planet") that nonetheless has a marvellous sense of the tongue in cheek to it. That's what makes David the best: he can tell a dramatic plot while still maintaining a sense of humor.
