Summary: New Frontier: For newcomers, old friends, and Western fans?!
Review:

The words "Where no man has gone before" have never been truer than in Star Trek: The New Frontier. Following the recent popularity of serial novels by Stephen King and others, science-fiction favorite Peter David delivers a brand new Star Trek ship and crew, lead by the very first alien Star Trek captain.

Something for everyone is included in the New Frontier. For Star Trek fans, this is a chance to see old supporting characters fleshed out along with new, dynamic characters. For science-fiction fans, who may know little or nothing about Star Trek, this is your jumping on point. Most necessary Star Trek knowledge is explained as you go, so allow this to be your first excersion into the Star Trek universe.

Finally, for Western fans, listen up! The captain of New Frontier's Excaliber is Mackenzie Calhoun, the closest thing to a space-cowboy you'll ever meet. Calhoun doesn't ask nicely, he doesn't negotiate with alien races, he rides in with guns a-blazing and takes things by storm. Calhoun is more than willing to bluff an alien race that takes a "town" hostage, and goes down mano-e-mano against the local government to end a blood feud. Part Star Trek, part Low Riders and Magnificent Seven, take the New Frontier along for your summer reading and "boldly go" on an excellent ride

Summary: Peter David can do better
Review: A great concept but a pedestrian story. C'mon Peter David you can do better!

Summary: A good look at true new frontier
Review: A totally new Trek world without the scrutiny of the mass media world via television give a new light to what Star Trek has grown to mean - stories about diverse people coming together to overcome some goal. Granted, some of the characters are truely freaks and outcasts, but thats what gives this crew a littled added character. This isn't going to win any awards, but for any causal fan of ST, this book, and the New Frontier books to come, should give us a cast to root for without worriing about if a tv writer or other author would have done with the same situation.

Summary: Great new star trek series - Lousy publication stunt
Review: After reading the book I was very pleased to find an author who is still capable of sparking some life in the old Star Trek corpse. Why aren't the current Star Trek writers of the several tv series able to tell a story as interesting as this first book in the new series? Isn't it about time that some real writers take the helm of the different ships and stations and tell us some gripping stories as Peter David has done and will be doing. Am I the only one who finds most of the Star Trek books more intresting and entertaining than the several tv-series? Peter David is an author who is capable of giving us each time his best stories possible and I am looking to read some great stories in this series. The book is a very good start for a new series without an tv-series! Read it, you will not be disappointed! The negative side to this new series is the way that Pocket Books has published/is going to publish this series in FOUR books. What has (re)started last year with Stephen Kings'Green Mile is becoming the new publication gimmick. Can we ask 12.00 USD for a story? Are the fans going to pay this amount of money? Yes, they will pay that amount of money because the human drive/Star Trek Fan drive is to collect and satisfy his curriosity! I am against this kind of publication gimmick and hope with me a lot of Star Trek Fans. Books and entertainment in general are becoming more and more expensive, so I don't need another rip-off.

Summary: Awesome pilot for a new series
Review: An AWESOME story. Peter David does a great job of setting the backgound of his new series. He brings old characters from the Next Generation, and new characters, and blends them together great. He leaves you hanging at the end, waiting to start book number 2. I was very impressed!

Summary: exciting new series
Review: first things first. This book is NOT 304 pages long! Volumes 1 & 2 together are 304 pages! a real disappointment. The publishers should have put all 4 volumes together - it would have made 1 great book. Reading volumes 1 & 2 are like reading two chapters of a real book. Very disappointing. Now for the good part - the premise is excellent and should make for a good series - new characters mixed with old - you'll like them immediately. I recommend you all wait til volumes 3 & 4 come out and read them all together. Shame on the publisher - I can't believe this was Peter David's idea.

Summary: Star Trek climbs to "New Frontiers"
Review: For those of you out there that love the Star Trek Universe but want to see more of it...this series is for you. From Peter David, comes the tale of Captain Mackenzie Calhoun, in his quest to help the remains of the Thallonian Empire. There are plenty of turns and twists to easily keep the pages turning. I give this series a hearty "Warp Speed" review

Summary: Fantastic - but...
Review: I just read the book in one sitting and I thought it was phenominal! I had to give this one three stars because it was way too short, not to mention he left a major cliff hanger at the end. I hate it when writers do this - there is absolutely no reason on earth why a Star Trek novel should be put on deadline (money is a poor excuse if you ask me). I guess I'm the biggest sucker of all, since I'm immediately going to get the next books in line.

Summary: GrEaT PoTeNtIaL To Go EiThEr WaY
Review: i loved this book and think that this could be the begining of a very exciting series the character of mackenzie seems a little to one dimensional but it is still early in the series all in all i think that all of the new characters and aliens are very good

i can't wait for the rest of the series

Summary: Hats off to Peter David and John J. Ordover
Review: I was very skittish about a new crew and ship because it's been done very weakly in the past (to wit: Voyager). But as other Peter David entries in the series have been, 'New Frontier' is far superior to the vast majority of Star Trek novels. There is a definite rhythm to his pacing and each chapter plays in the reader's head precisely like a movie scene. Dr. Selar's inclusion was a pleasant surprise. An even bigger surprise was imagining Suzie Plakson playing her in the throes of ponn farr! I must join others in complaining about eventually spending $16 on what could have been put in at least two $5 volumes. If you need any evidence that Paramount bought Pocket, this is a major piece of it
