Rating: Summary: Well worth the read. Review: I really enjoyed this book. It was very faithful to the original series, right down to the interaction of the four main chacters. Kirk is the main player, along with a Klingon General. These strange bedfellows make for some spicy dialogue and intrigue. This is a very good start to a series of four books set in the Star Trek universe. I reommend is highly for its originality and fast pace
Rating: Summary: another good one Review: I really enjoyed this one...and you certainly don't have to read the other three to get the pay off from this one...though I may eventually. I loved seeing how Kirk's reputation is with the Klingons and how people from other cultures can see others. The Villians are certainly interesting, and I am certainly curious how others in ST universe deal with them. Though you do have to wonder, are they really villians? or just missunderstood? hmmmm...
Rating: Summary: Exciting and Scary Review: Imagine for a moment, the scariest and most foul thing you can think of. Now, take that to the power of 100 and you will have the creatures in the Invasion Book series. First Strike is the first book in a 4 book series which travels over all 4 Star Trek shows. The Enterprise crew comes across a species so foul looking, that they can't even bare to look at them. This species, appears to come in peace, but as we know, that always isn't the case. I don't want to give too much away, but this book is very exciting and well written. All 4 of these are unique, but I felt that Book # 1 was the best. Even if you don't care for Star Trek books, you should read these. I could hardly put the books down.
Rating: Summary: Kirk Redeems Himself Review: Kirk is often seen as less diplomatic or intellectual than Picard, but this book proves otherwise; Diane L. Carey paints Kirk in a very positive light as a skilled diplomat, determined to find peaceful solutions to extremely difficult situations. Yet despite his impressive efforts, when the time comes for Kirk to switch into warrior mode, he does so in a manner that demands respect even from the Klingons. Kirk's heroism is rarely well captured in print, but this is one of the few exceptions. "Invasion: First Strike" shows him to be a hero in both peace and war -- and provides a story worthy of his heroism.
Rating: Summary: Was Glad I Did.... Review: Not being a TOS fan, I had no intention of reading this book, but I wanted very badly to read the DS9 and Voyager books of this series. Having found the entire series on ebay for the price that I could get one book on Amazon, I got them all. So I started with the first one, this one. I am now very glad that I did. This book started off fantastic with the almighty Klingons scared to death of what they saw and experienced. Kept my attention throughout the book as the Klingon General begged Kirk for assistance and offered great insight into exactly how Kirk would handle such dire situations, his ability to lead and his diplomatic flare. I especially enjoyed how the book described the Klingon's views of Kirk as well as the Furies. This is a story of Kirks successes and failures, because in this book he does both. Definitely a worthwhile read for fans and non-fans alike.

Rating: Summary: variations on Trek themes Review: Thanks to all who read and bothered to send comments--I'm seeing stars. You might like to know that FIRST STRIKE was the result of two forces in what makes a book: 1) I had just come off the heavy hard-core science of FIRST FRONTIER (I know, too many "F" books, but I didn't title either of these) which involved collaboration with Dr. Jim Kirkland of Dynamation and much specific real science detail. As such, I wanted very much to do something with a different flavor, hence I bent toward something decidedly unscientific--mythology. I selected Celtic mythology, as well as Greek influences, which did crossover each other. Celtic mythology is particularly rich and earth-connected. There was not a separation between the spiritual world and the earthly world, as many other mythologies and religions developed. The poppets and the Holocaust of the Straw Colossus were real aspects of history. I wish I'd made them up. They were envigorating to describe and use. James Kirk discovers Hell. 2) this book was the first in a four-book experimental series that involved all four Star Trek crews. Greg Brodeur and I were charged with inventing a situation that could credibly need handling by everyone from James Kirk in the Trek "past" to Kathryn Janeway in the Delta Quadrant. Knowing we were developing a story line that involved three other authors or teams, we felt obliged to allow for as much flexibility as possible. Hence, the Pandora's box of bad guys allowed each author to fly in his own imaginary space. After all, variety is everything. Otherwise we would all wear brown. Well, I have a ship to tend to (1609 Dutch East Indiaman) . . . au revoir.
Rating: Summary: Talk, Talk, Talk... Review: That's what Klingon General Kellen thinks of Kirk upon meeting him. This is a great opportunity to see the Diplomatic Kirk who receives the chance for first contact with a new (or old) alien race. This book really captured my attention after someone had told me the Invasion series wasn't that great. This one was extremely well written as most of Carey's books tend to be.
