Rating: Summary: HUH? Why titled double helix? Review: Only after page 200 did the mention of a virus even come up except for one sentence before that. Doesn't belong in the double helix series. Ridiculous, and not even much of a plot but more about sex and dumb jokes.
Rating: Summary: Double or nothing, indeed! Review: Peter David has writen another amazing New Frontier story. Completely filled with twists and surprises all the way to the end. Also it has numerous familar guest stars. Particularly like the ongoing conflict between Riker and Shelby.
Rating: Summary: It was about time - Riker finally gets his own command. Review: Peter David is a genius in writing. Honestly. Once again he's managed to come up with an interesting story plus numerous b-events that all fit together in one big, exiting and thrilling piece of literature.Even though this book is stated to be a novel from "The Next Generation", it can hardly be connected to Picard's adventures. However, for me personally the most fun was to see how much Commander Riker is suffering under his first real command. It reveals a lot of his motivation and why he has never accepted commanding a vessel of his own. Shelby gives him a wilful adversary as she'd done before when she was assigned as his First Officer back in the days of "The Best Of Both Worlds". Also, Peter David again manages to include a lot of guest stars, such as the admirals Nechayev and Jellico, who both have become leading characters in the word of "Star Trek: New Frontier". Jellico again gets a much bigger character now, not only being the madman. Not to forget, the James Bond-theme of an unknown technician, creating lots of little toys! I really had a hard laugh on that one! The only negative fact I found is the revealing of Burgoyne's pregnancy or better to say non-pregnancy. For fans, it is sad being forced to buy this book in order to get to know how the story between Burgoyne and McHenry. For Peter David, it's again a good way of getting more money out of his enjoyable novels. But all in all, it's a solid book with a challenging storyline, filled with tons of double-meaning remarks!
Rating: Summary: WONDERFUL Review: THE BEST OF THE DOUBLE HELIX SERIES. I CERTAINLY HOPE THAT THE FOLKS AT PARAMOUNT RELIZE THAT NEW FRONTIER IS THE NEXT GREAT STAR TREK SERIES. THE CREW OF THE EXCALABIR IS A COMBINATION OF ALL OF THE SERIES. PETER DAVID SET IT UP WITH THE STARFLEET ACADEMY SERIES. THEN COMBINES ALL OF IT WITH SEXY, QUIRKY, INTERESTING CHARACTERS.
Rating: Summary: More nothing than doubling your pleasure, but readable Review: The Plot: This is the fifth in the series about a vengeful attack on the universe by an "unknown" assailant who uses biological weapons to wipe out races in the Federation. This book puts: Riker on the Excalibur, dealing with Shelby et al (not well-written although the one-liners are occasionally funny); Mackenzie on a secret undercover mission to infiltrate the assailant's lair (really interesting at the start, but grows a tad repetitive near the end); and, Picard undercover to do the same thing, eventually linking up with Mackenzie (and making little to no sense for most of it!). What I Liked: Calhoun is great, and there is an interesting interplay between Admirals at one point. What I Didn't Like: My real problem with this story is the sequencing...up until now in the series, you haven't known why the assailant is doing what he is doing, or even who it is. This one reveals all, and the motives are kind of a cliché. Oh well, they had to come to a "revelation" at some point, just didn't live up to the suspense. The Bottom Line: In short, the New Frontier portion stays true to form while the rest of the interactions with The Next Generation universe is more of a caricature than reality: 3.00 lilypads out of 5.00. Rating: Summary: Falls flat Review: The rest of the Double Helix series has been a blast, but this one took me forever to read. To tell the truth, I haven't even finished it, and I'm not sure I will. I loved Imzadi, that was a killer book, but David's portrayal of Riker is horrid, and I'm two thirds through the book and have yet to see Picard. The way his New Frontier crew interacts is similar to a 90210 episode, and, I'm glad to say, has made up my mind as to whether or not to check out the real series. David's character Calhoun is disgusting. Does the guy have ANY weaknessess? I thought the novel said "Star Trek: The Next Generation" on the front, not "Peter David's Pet Character". Still, if you're going to read the whole Double Helix series, you should go ahead and read this. Though it doesn't seem to be going anywhere towards the next book. *sigh* Oh well. If you want a good example of how a seperate, new crew can be brought in and work excellently with TNG folks, try Diane Carey's Ship of The Line. It's great. I'll agree with one of the previous posters, the Q - Continuum trilogy was excellent! Anyway, here's hoping that David's next one will be better!
Rating: Summary: Peter David - same old Review: This book was just like nearly all the other Peter David books - very interesting, very well-written, very funny and packed with a few two many plugs for David's other books. Although the book is classified TNG, it's really about Calahoun and the Excalibur crew. This is the climax of the Double Helix series (I've read all but the third and the sixth), and it seems to be the important one. Ironically, David deals with the Double Helix virus as just another super-galaxy-threatening weapon, which is kind of disapointing - one of the things I liked about the series was seeing the crew deal with a less physical threat. I wasn't impressed by the mysterious villain lurking around in the shadows until this book. You can buy this book without the rest of the Double Helix series without a problem. I also want to add that it seems David watched one too many James Bond flicks while he was writing this.
Rating: Summary: Best Of The Double Helix Review: This book was the best of the Double Helix series and one of the best Star Trek books yet. I also enjoyed how the book combined some of the crews from ST:TNG and ST:NF. About the layout of the book though, the beginning of the book really seemed slow but the excitement really built up and just exploded at the end of the book. Even though this si true, the end and the middle buildup makes it all worthwhile.
Rating: Summary: Ok but doesn't belong in double helix Review: This book would have been a good book as a regular book w/o being in the double helix series. I really hated Calhoun and how he seemed to be ale to do anything. I mean c'mon thats not realistic
Rating: Summary: Peter David does it again! Review: This is another great installment to the New Frontier and the Double Helix series. Not having read the last of the Double Helix books yet, it seems that this one pretty much finishes the Double Helix???? A favorite quote from the book, Riker - "I've got to get off this ship." Peter David did an excellent job of integrating Picard and Riker into the New Frontier. It's really interesting and well done how he brought Riker and Shelby together again. That portion was done very well and even better than I'd expected another meeting of those two. Overall another great book by Peter David.
