Rating: Summary: Meet the REAL Zefram Cochrane Review: Amazing! This book portrays Zefram Cochrane in a much different light than the otherwise excellent FIRST CONTACT. This portrayal certainly makes much more sense. Cochrane, a scientist who is just trying to better the world by his invention, only to be pursued by a homocidal maniac trying to get a weapon that doesn't exist. The drama that unfolds in Cochrane's life is truly a great epic. Much better than a drunken man hoping to make money so he can 'retire to an island full of naked women', wouldn't you say? And, it is truly great to see how this story is masterfully woven into real Star Trek episodes. And, even at the end, the movie GENERATIONS is not forgotten. This is a book that any Star Trek fan can enjoy. Hey, let's make this into a movie..
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book Review: Incredible Book, reflects 3 Generations. Great Plot. 5 Stars, a 11 on a chart of 1 to 10. The Best book I ever read. VERY RECOMMENDED
Rating: Summary: This is truly a book like no other that I have read before. Review: After reading "Federation" for the fourth time, I have come to realize that this truly is a book like no other I have read before. It spans the generations going back to Zefram Cochrane's invention of the warp drive, taking in one of Captain Kirk's many, many adventures, and even going on to include Captain Picard and the Enterprise D. The way that Judith and Garfield bring the whole story together at the ending in one gigantic adventure combining all three timelines is something that blew me out of the water. This is definately a Star Trek masterpiece
Rating: Summary: Learn how the Federation ideals affect 3 generations Review: Not only do original Star Trek fans get a real treat with this book, but also fans of The Next Generation. Anyone who has read or watched Star Trek Generations will love the inclusion of Zephram Cochram and the beginning of the Federation in this delightful novel. Spanning 400 years of Federation history, Judith Reeves-Stevens, Garfield Reeves-Stevens provide an excellent insight into the development of Federation ideals. You do not have to be an avid fan to enjoy this novel
Rating: Summary: A great Star Trek book... Review: I don't read Trek books compulsively, and those I have read, I haven't been too impressed with. Most read like novellizations of episodes, or just get silly. But this may have been the best one I've read yet. It has a wonderful plot that spans over three hundred years of Trek lore, from Zephram Cochraine, up to the Next Generation, and even a little beyond. Along the way, the Stevenses combine the plots of quite a few of the episodes, classic and new. The downside? The authors made a lot of interesting guesses about Trek prehistory which, unfortunately, turned out to be dead wrong. The recent release of First Contact negates much of what they say about Cochraine. But, if you can put that from your mind, you'll have a great time with this book. Heartily recommended to any Trek fan
Rating: Summary: A creative, yet believable book. Review: In this great piece of literature, a great writing team puts forth an excellent and complex storyline.
Both authors consummate their usage of Star Trek lore, their own creative ideas, and their ability to replicate each character's individuality.
The story begins as three separate plots. The first takes place in the mid-twentyfirst century, and describes how Zephram Cochrane used his warp drive to foil, and escape from the earth-dominating Optimum Movement. The second outlines Kirk's discovery of Cohrane himself on a barren planet. The third describes how the Enterprise-D discovers an interesting artifact from one of their most dangerous enemies.
These plots are combined ingeniously and unexpectedly. In order to find out how though, you have to read the book. I give it a 9. which as the story progresses, slowly and steadily intertwine.
The plot is slow to develop, but it is interesting to read about
Rating: Summary: A solid story suitable to become a part of Trek lore Review: A good story, albeit an admittedly 'unauthorized' one which has since been superceded to an extent by the First Contact movie. Much is said in this book about the ideology behind the United Federation of Planets that relates to duty, honor, and character and how that impacts upon the human condition. This is different from the usual IDIC philosophy which Trek primarily puts forth.
Well thought out, historically compelling work of Trek fiction. The only reason I can't give it a 10 is because of the usual problem with old Trek and its focus on the three main characters.
Rating: Summary: Incredible Star Trek read !! Review: Except for a little slowness at the beginning, Federation was one of the most exciting Trek novels I have read. The fusion of the three time lines involved in the book was fun to read. The only drawback to the book was that if the reader has seen the movie Satr Trek:First Contact, then they are left to wonder why TNG (The Next Generation) crew did not "recall" this (the books) previous contact with Cochrane. Nevertheless, Federation was an excellently written book
Rating: Summary: An excellent Trek novel Review: This is best written Trek novel I have ever read. It is greatly detailed and exciting to the last page. I recommend it to all Trekkies or someone who just wants a good science-fiction read. A
Rating: Summary: Excellent plot by two gifted authors. Review: First, of all, the reason I give this book a 7 is because for the first 60 pages or so the plot seems to go nowhere. Although after it began to pick up the storyline was relentlessly exciting. The tale of both of the ships was woven masterfully along with a truly evil villain. The plot centers around Zefram Cochrane, inventor of the "warp drive", and the mission of both Enterprises. The story is neatly tied toghether with no ends left undone. All in all, Federation is a great book that you don't have to be a fan of Star Trek to enjoy
