Rating: Summary: Another best seller that lives up to Trek expectation! Review: I have read all of Shatner's Star Trek novels. Why not give this one six stars? Each one is progressively better than the previous. The Mirror Universe concept is great and developes Shatner's continuing exploration of Trek history. My only suggestion is that I would like to see the art work involve more than just the repeated Shatner and Patrick Stewart form cover. I think the publisher has used the concept to the point of exhaustion. Why not put other related characters on the cover; such as, Kirk's betrothed, Teilani? Just something more to lead on the imagination. Anyway. Shatner's writing continuously progresses in style. This lends itself to the credibility of the story. The Mirror Universe concept is only going to open up more doors for Shatner's plots. Can't wait for the next novel-Dark Victory.
Rating: Summary: Shatner, Reeves-Stevenses Deliver with 'Spectre' Review: Old legends never die, and it's no exception with Capt. James T. Kirk. 'Spectre' chonicles the resurrection of Kirk and picks up where 'The Return' and 'Avenger' left off. Shatner and company continue the quick-paced, easy-to-read style of the previous books while also maintaining the "big-movie, monumental-event" feel when bringing in characters from various 'Trek' series. It's the closest 'Trek' fans will get to seeing characters from all the series in one story, and a definite must-read for anyone who considers themselves a semi-serious fan of the series. Tidbits referring back to events in the different series are also some wonderful rewards that 'Trek' readers will delight to. I'm not going to debate some of the plot flaws that others point to -- 'Trek' has such a long and rich "official" lore between four TV series and nine movies, that there is bound to be some contradictions. (Novels, comic books, cartoons, etc. are not considered by Paramount Studios as part of the official 'Star Trek' history, for those of you playing along at home.) Better to let each reader decide what is or isn't contradictory or true 'Trek' than to debate it in a review. Perhaps my only comment about the book is Kirk's increasing whining about his love. I think it's great to finally see Kirk as a three-dimensional character who feels pain, remorse, anger, and love like everyone else does, as well as watch him grow older. But Shatner's constant insistence on reminding the reader how much Kirk misses his woman makes Kirk sound like some loved-starved teenager in "Dawson's Creek," rather than a middle-aged hero who just wants to settle down. Be that as it may, 'Spectre' is a treat for 'Trek' fans that will have them eagerly awaiting its sequel.
Rating: Summary: Exciting! Review: The best Star Trek book ever! It was exciting all the way to the end. The "to be continued" disappointed me. I can't wait for the sequel, "Dark Victory"!! I highly recommend this book!
Rating: Summary: the best trek book to date Review: Mr. Shatner's trek novels have all been wonderful with each volume being better than the last with Spectre being no exception. This is an excellent novel. Everything is tightly plotted, everyones lanugage and tone captured to their true trek personalities. I especially enjoyed the mirrored Janeway. I am counting the days until Dark Victory. ( That's a slight exaggeration since I don't know exactly when the release date will be.)
Rating: Summary: Points up flaws in DS9 "Mirror" premise. Review: In DS9's "Crossover" Intendant Kira Nerys claimed that mirror-Spock's reforms left the Terran Empire open to conquest by an alliance of Klingons and Cardassians. A disarmed empire would have been carved up by the Klingons and Cardassians;it would not have caused the Klingons to feel they needed to form an alliance with the Cardassians, and if mirror-Spock had attempted to disarm the Earth Empire the human-dominated Imperial Starfleet would have overthrown him in a coup. Shatner indirectly makes the first point by having mirror-Spock relate:"It is in the Cardassian nature to seek alliances. It is not a common Klingon trait, except under unusual circumstances." There have been a number of suggestions for making Spectre and Shatner's other Star Trek novels into movies. If it's not feasible to return Kirk to life on the big screen Paramount should at least consider bringing a post-"Relics" Scotty into a movie or DS9 episode.
Rating: Summary: Points up flaws in DS9 "Mirror" premise Review: In the review by RHAAS@SI.EDU. Aug. 27 the author appears to be referring to Intendant Kira Nerys' claim in DS9's "Crossover" that mirror-Spock disarmed the Terran Empire and left it open to conquest by the alliance of Klingons and Cardassians. An empire that embraced disarmament would have been carved up by the Klingons and Cardassians. It would not have caused the Klingons to feel they needed to form an alliance with the Cardassians, and if Spock had attempted to disarm the Earth Empire the human-dominated Imperial Starfleet would have overthrown him in a coup. Rating: Summary: Star Trek Review: Star Trek: Spectre I think this book is book rates a 5 because I like all the details and it was very attractive. I couldn't stop, I had to finish reading it. This book was one of a sequel of Star Trek books beginning with Star Trek: Avenger and Star Trek: The Return. I also like this book because it relates to the current series and movies allowing you to visualize what is being described. I have read other Star Trek novels that made no sense at all such as the novel, Star Trek: Dark Mirror that contradicted what was going on in both series of Star Trek DS9 and Voyager. This book describes how Captain Kirk now retired from Star Fleet journeys to rescue his wife who was abducted and how Captain Picard must try to retake the Enterprise from terrorist who have commandeered it. This book takes place during the current Dominion War and 5 years since the lost of the starship, Voyager. This book starts out when Captain Kirk's wife was kidnapped and Kirk was confronted by an old friend but one from an alternate universe. And during about the same time, the lost starship, Voyager returns to the Federation. The Voyager was in fact a reproduction of the real one from another universe. They wanted to commandeer the Enterprise E in order to transport it to the other universe and to defeat the Terran Resistance. The alternate universes all started out back when Kirk was on his Enterprise about 200 years ago when he went through a transporter accident and traded places with his counterpart. This lead to a change that weakened the Terran Empire, allowing it to be conquered and enslaved while the other universe progressed into a beautiful United Federation of Planets. Any body who is curios about the future should read any science fiction books because they hypothesize the future and all the possibilities. This book is one of which that was interesting to me. The word that would capture peoples attention would be action and adventure; want adventure, curious about the future, read and let your . imagination let you fantasize.
Rating: Summary: Why William Shatner Should Write more Star Trek Novels Review: I have read and enjoyed all of Bills Star Trek Novels. Because he isn't like a lot of the other authors who make up history to suit their books. He uses events from previous episodes of classic trek and current episodes or movies to give his work more credibilty. His works should be considered cannon for Paramount and I think there is whole universe of stories left to tell involving Kirk in the 24th century.
Rating: Summary: An improvement Review: Finally I discovered a reason why I purchased the Shatner Trek novels - sooner or later one would be a decent read. After the woeful "The Return" and "Avenger" novels, Spectre was a breath of fresh air. Shatner seems to have focused more on writing a good book than stroking his ego.
Rating: Summary: Star trek to the fullest it deserves 10 gold stars. Review: It could only take a person like Bill Shatner to write such an amazing adventure from the startrek universe. It has everything, love, adventure, technology and three out of four of the startrek cast (although Ben Sisko does get mentioned)I could not put the book down, because I wanted to know what was going to happen next, a brilliant story with a sequel to come I hope. If in the future they make a film staring all of the four startrek seires then they should base it on this book. In a word FANTASTIC......
