Rating: Summary: where dragonlance and ravenloft meet. Review: As the intro tells us, I have been wondering about lord Soth since I read the chronicles. The chronicles where what I wanted in a fantasy book and since then, Dragonlance has been my game setting. After reading this book and some pushing from my friens, I finally crossed over to Ravenloft. Eric
Rating: Summary: Describing the conflict Review: Characters so deep you actually grow attached to them the vampire lord Strahd is wickedly diabolique, and Lord Soth the hero(or antihero)is intimidating just by reading about him,one of the best of the Ravenloft series
Rating: Summary: A shallow story with little resolution Review: First, let me say that this is my first exposure to Lord Soth, as I have never read a Dragonlance novel. If anyone beleives that my opinion is thus invalidated, read no further. As you know, Soth is the central character in this story. Though I know nothing of his exploits as an undead warrior, this book does shed light upon his past, revealing the events that led to his spiritual downfall and consequent death. While this insight might prove interesting to Soth fans, the plot as a whole leaves MUCH to be desired. Upon reaching the end of the book, I realized that there really wasn't a point to the story beyond the initial set-up. Imagine The Wizard of Oz, with Dorothy & friends following the yellow brick road and enduring all the obstacles in their way, but instead of reaching the Emerald City, they discover that the road looped in a circle and they were right back where they started. Ugh. The supporting characters are poorly used as well. They lack depth, and seem inconsequential to the story. One character seems as if they might play a part in the resolution of the story, only to quietly exit the story very late in the book. I kept waiting for their inevitable return, but it never came. Why was a seemingly important supporting character thrown haphazardly away? Who knows. Strahd is also poorly portrayed in my opinion. I loved him in Vampire of the Mists. He was a deep and fascinating character with a rich backstory and a calculatingly smooth personality. Here, he is presented as excessively arrogant and crude, with nary a hint of the elegance or cool logic he displayed in the previous novel. If you are a Ravenloft fan, or a fantasy fan in general, please avoid this book and check out Vampire of the Mists instead. Soth fans may find sufficient enjoyment here, but I found myself feeling completely unfulfilled.
Rating: Summary: Lord Soth rules Review: He could take over ravenloft any time he wants too
Rating: Summary: information only Review: I am a huge fan of ravenloft fantasy and soth, this is why im having trouble writing this but its the truth(mine anyway):The book though it gives a great insight into soths charecter is very poorly writen,my 3 year old sister can write a more sofistaceted plot and with much less holes(the dark keeper of the gate? please)it is completly void of all meaning and purpose... But to sum it up,if you are a soth fan you should try to read the book.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: I am a strong fan of Forgotten Realms novels and bought this Ravenloft book by mistake. I am very happy that I made that mistake because this book was great. It got me into Ravenloft and is still the best along with I, Strahd.
Rating: Summary: ALMOST great. Review: I don;t really think of this as a Ravenloft book. It's a Dragonlance book that stumbled into Ravenloft. Now, since I like BOTH, I was prepared to love this book. The problem comes when Soth turns from a Death Knight into a kind of weak spellcaster. Not to mention that everybody involved acts out of character. And what in the heck is that DRAGON doing in Strahd's castle?
Rating: Summary: The best fantasy horror book I've read... really! Review: I have only read a couple other fantasy horror books but NOTHING like this one. I would have to say that this is a start of a new bookcase for me. If your interested in anything related to D&D, magic, or death (lol) you will absolutely love the Ravenloft series. The story is fantastic, it never slows down. It is seamless and easy to follow. I felt like I acctually knew the charicters by the end of the book(thats how good the charicter development is!). And the way Lowder(the writer) describes all of the spells and the way everyone looks and sometimes just the absolute terror written on someones face... oh man you feel like you're there! well this is a fantastic book with many others before and after it. (if your trying to read the whole serise in order good luck!) I greatly recomend this book to ALL people who are interested in this topic. -§mee
Rating: Summary: excellent book Review: i love i
