Summary: The continuing Star Trek Soap Opera series
Review: The New Frontier series gives you three things you do not get with any other Star Trek series. First, you get a group of mostly original characters, having borrowed a couple of supporting characters from the Next Generation show and the Starfleet Academy books. Second, you get a single writer, Peter David. writing every book. Third, you get what is essentially a continuing story, where if you do not read the books in sequences you are not going to be able to follow what is going on with the various situations and relationships. Of course, this makes sense. After all, this is not a question of being familiar with the characters from the respective series. However, in "Fire on High" we are becoming aware of both the strengths and the weaknesses of these unique facets.

I am not surprised that the New Frontier series is turning into something of a soap opera. Obviously there is greater freedom for romantic entanglements here than in any of the other series, where only television episodes or feature films get to determine who is in love with whom and to what extent. Besides, Peter David has always been just as much of a romantic ("Imzadi" and "Imzadi II") as he has been a master of biting humor ("A Rock and a Hard Place" and "Q-In-Law"). And like a soap opera there is a whole bunch of stuff going on in "Fire on High": Selar and Burgoyne are going to be parents, Robin has found out her mother is not dead, Shelby is in denial about Calhoun, and everybody is going to Soleta for romantic advice. Oh, and by the way, the Tholeian firebird laid an egg in the warp core and on Armista there is a woman with a really big gun who has destroyed ever other living creature on the planet.

Bottom line, I am still enjoying the series although it has yet to produce a really great story. I bought into the idea because I liked how Captain Calhoun was a reincarnation of Commander Quintin Stone, the unforgettable character he created in "A Rock and a Hard Place." But I do not care about the characters enough yet to really be interested in the romantic entanglements and since that is becoming the major thrust of the series, that might be a problem. Still, I must admit he often makes he laugh. We have the same sort of sense of humor, so for now I will continue to work my way through this series.

Summary: Fire on High is a great addition
Review: The original stories that Peter David is coming up with are getting better and better. This one, telling of a woman's quest to find a technologically advanced race, and finding her friend stuck with a machine that has caused the destruction of an entire planet, is great. Also, the way this story continues on from the the last book in the series, Martyr, makes it that much more fun to read. As always, have the next books in the series ready when you finish this one, because you won't be able to put it down.

Summary: Again, another good continuation of the New Frontier series
Review: This book continues the on-going story of the collapse of the Thallonian Empire. The main story focuses on the sudden appearence of Robin Lefler's mother, Morgan, who was thought to be dead. Also appearing in this story is an alien race similar to the Q.

Summary: An improvement over the dismal New Frontier novel: ¿Martyr'
Review: This book is certainly better than 'Martyr' the sexed up quasi religious mess that it was. I liked the Morgan Lefler character, she had a certain grit and earthy charm. The emotional strain between her and her estranged and embittered daughter Lt Robin Lefler was palpable.

The ultimate super-weapon angle spoiled it. Especially when it's in the hands of an emaciated, deranged former travelling companion of Morgan Lefler. Who destroyed all life on the now barren planet she resides on..

It had all the ingredients of typical 'Trek' A god like race; the Prometheans who give 'loaded guns to children' an immortal being, a strange energy creature endangering the Star-ship , a mysterious woman inexpliquably bonded to a superweapon, and a serious contravention of the Prime Directive. The trouble is Peter David over spices the mix and the result is not a palatable as it could have been, nonetheless a good effort.

Summary: Fire on High is lukewarm
Review: This is the sixth in the new series about the U.S.S. Excalbur. This one sheers away from the focus on Captain Calhoun and Shelby, and instead deals with the interactions of Selar, Burgoyne, and McHenry, trying to flesh them out. Even Soleta has some amazing lines. The focus however is on Lefler and the return of her mother. This focus could have been far more detailed than it was, or at least attempted to go for more depth in their relationship. It just wasn't there. The story is interesting, and you get to meet another race, but a lot of it seems to be the laying down of markers for future stories and tying up a few loose ends from previous stories. Although it has a cute ending and I can't wait for #7 as the series continues its slightly irreverent attitude towards all things Starfleet, this one is not one of the best in the series.

Summary: The further adventures of the USS Excalibur
Review: This series has really come into its own by this book. This time, Lt. Robin Lefler comes to centre stage when her mother - thought dead for ten years - shows up alive and well in the Thallonian Sector.

With some themes that mirror some original-series Star Trek, and some good character development on the parts of Dr. Selar, Chief Burgoyne, the enigmatic Si Cwan, and Commander Shelby, this book definately kicks the "New Frontier" series into high gear.

Peter David has done some wonderful crafting here, especially given that he only had a few moments of screen time for three of the characters he has taken from the Next Generation series. Once again, he proves that well-written characters are the real power behind the Star Trek universe, and "New Frontier" has definately earned its place therein.

You will not be disappointed by this series.

Summary: Keep your eyes on Lefler...
Review: Very interesting story... Well done... There were two side stories... 1 with Robin Lefler... and 2 with Burgy in engineering... I am not going to say anything... but please read this book carefully... I did and I enjoyed the surprises.

Summary: fantastic new era in star trek.
Review: Wouldn't miss a book in this series for anything. Am waiting patiently for the next novel. The blend of characterization and story plot is great. The characters are not overdone yet you get a feeling for the species. This would make an excellent tv series if kept in line with the first six books, or several good movies.
