Rating: Summary: The good old Kirk is back... maybe not that good! Review: Avenger brings us the best of Star Trek, comedy(Spock x McCoy), a challenge(The end of Federation), and a smart solution(buy the book and read it!)
The story starts on Kirk's ends, more precisely the last one, then the scenario's background begins to be set up:
A plague is dissiminating through the Federation which infects any clorophyla based plant, there is no food on affected planets, replicators aren't fast or reliable enough. Enterprise E starts to investigate, Spock with his aide starts to investigate, a stranger(guess who) shows up with a possible cure, and also starts to investigate. Maybe they all have the same enemy, maybe it is whitin the Federation, but they also have their own clues, and everyone starts light years way from one another.
There's also a new crew, in another ship, that resembles the good old days of Classic Star Trek, and the chief of their mission, is the good old stranger(the same one) that's somehow different, not so good at all.
When everybody meets, things just don't happen how you should think they would, although Kirk, Spock and McCoy shall be together again, things change!
(final note: will they succed!?)
Rating: Summary: Can it get much better than this? Review: Each of Shatner's books is markedly better than
the previous one. Having enjoyed the first two
very much, I was on the edge of my seat this time around.
"Avenger" solidly connects events from ST, ST:TNG and the previous books. The backstories connecting the events did not seem contrived as they often can.
This might seem a silly statement, but Shatner writes Kirk very well. Sure, he played the part once or twice :-) but to me, being able to portray the character and being able to write the lines are two separate skills. I wouldn't expect an actor to be able to write any more than I would expect a writer to act. Shatner does an excellent job not only with Kirk but with the rest of the characters.
While others might argue that having Kirk go Zen is a step in the wrong direction, I think it gives him a greater depth than anyone might have imagined he had. For those of you who watch _Babylon 5_, the Kirk in "Avenger" has changed about as much as Commander Sinclair did between "Chrysalis" and "War Without End." It looked good on Sinclair and it also looks good on Kirk. Don't worry, though -- the Kirk you know and love comes out at the right moments.
If you haven't read the first two books, hurry up and do so. Then sit down with "Avenger" and enjoy...
Rating: Summary: a great novel by shtaner Review: it tells why kirk has alaways knew he was going to die alone.is comanding techniqus are also shown as he recks havok on the new enterprise e.and then joins forces with picard.and spock lerns his young helper killed his father and attemted to kill him,all in all this is a graet boo
Rating: Summary: He's back again. Review: Here we go again. When Shatner wrote "The Return" he actually did a better job than "Generations", but now he's just riding this horse a little too long. Kirk is back and he lives all the way through this one too. That's no surprise, because Shatner himself tells you on the first page that he's signed to do two more. If Kirk had died at the end of "The Return", then it would have been a masterpiece. "Avenger" is nothing more than fluff with a few NG characters thrown in to grab you
Rating: Summary: An Excellent Read for Any Sci-Fi Fan Review: It's nice to read a Star Trek book that takes the time to develop some depth in a plot. Avenger is no "one episode" book with a story line that spans the entire Star Trek universe from the very beginning to "present time." The return of Kirk, Spock and McCoy to Picard's Federation (in trouble as usual) is done in an entertaining, "believable" way. But what will they all do next in the 24th Century? The action is fast-paced and confirms the Shatner/Reeves-Stevens trio really knows how to write a good book
Rating: Summary: A must read for classic Trek fans! Review: No surprise that Kirk survived the Borg homeworld (The Return) and learns that the Federation is collapsing. We have seen this story many times before, however, what is refresheningly different is the way in which Shatner connects currents events to those that have happened in the past. It turns out that the Federation has been under attack by it's closest neighbor for a very long time. This alone gives Shatner the freedom he needs to make those very necessary connections. Kirk is on the trail first, finds Spock, and finally meets up with Picard and the crew of the Enterprise-E. Together they do the only thing they know how, save the Federation and it's populus from certain death. Regardless of the events, this novel will be remembered for the character development of Kirk and Spock. Both have changed immensely since the original five-year mission, and no where is it more noticeable than in Avenger. Perhaps the underlying theme here is that no matter how long an individual lives, like the galaxy, they are constantly evolving. Shatner has successfully proven his point that legends never die nor do they, as it appears, ever stop being heroes
Rating: Summary: Star Trek Avenger - A great conclusion to the first trilogy! Review: Star Trek "Avenger" is a good conclusion to William Shatner and Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens first Star Trek trilogy that spans well over a century of "Star Trek" time. The first two, "The Ashes of Eden" and "The Return" were absolutely phenomenal in so much as telling a good story about Captain Kirk just before the events of Star Trek "Generations" and after the events of that movie with his return from the dead in "The Return" bringing this compelling character back to Star Trek readers if not moviegoers. The one unfortunate aspect of "Avenger" is that while it is a very good novel it doesn't quite live up to its two predecessors. The story in and of itself is a pretty good one, it just reaches into some areas of Star Trek that leaves one wondering where the authors were going; by that I mean in the areas where the dialogue more or less puts Captain Kirk in such a glorious light and in doing so demeaning such STNG icons as Captain Picard and Commander Riker. That being said, the overall story is still a very good one where all three authors deftly put together a truly good story that is in good fashion in Gene Roddenberry's universe. The pacing of the novel is exceptional and the overall plot set up and execution is well on the mark. The cover art for "Avenger" is pretty much more of the same bland stuff that was very typical of Star Trek novels at the time of its publishing. The Premise: In true Star Trek style and fashion, William Shatner and the Stevens brought together a story that clearly ties up many of the loose ends set up in the first two novels and set up a reunion between Captain Kirk and Spock. The two storied heroes eventually come together when Captain Kirk, long thought to be dead, sets out to discover the source of a lethal virus that is destroying crops all over the Federation causing famine throughout the Federation with the situation worsened by over population. At the same time, Spock returns home to Vulcan to investigate whether his father died of natural causes or could there have been foul play involved. Both investigations lead them into a long awaited reunion that is told extremely well... What follows is an exceptionally well written novel with only few technical errors that aren't too difficult to overcome. Overall, I would highly recommend this and the first two novels in this, the first Shatner/Stevens trilogy to any and all fans of good Star Trek fiction! {ssintrepid}
Rating: Summary: Shatner RULES!!! Review: This is real good ST and real good Sci-Fi. Lets see, Picard is what, about 50, Ricker about 19 and Data 8 years old. Alone come Captain Kirk, who has been in star fleet for 100 years, spock 150 year and Shatner (WHO IS KirK!!!) is attacked for writing a book where Kirk and Spock outshine Picard. Why Shatner haters even read Shatner books (maybe they don't?). I know why they should read this one. Even if you hate Shatner, this is a good stuff. Shatner and his friends, and I don't care how much Shatner actually writes, tell good stories. I wish they would keep writing ST books and include the characters from DS9, TNG and Voyager. Maybe even get caught in a time warp and go back to visit Capt. Archer. Also, Picard thinks enough of Kirk that he went into the stream to get him, an event that ended in kirk dieing again. Might not Picard defer to Kirk for a plausible rational when he lacked one? I think so. Picard was great at sounding out his officers before acting. Once they are finally on the same side, Picard and Kirk are a great team. This book has a lot in it. If you like the pacing and style of this book, try Shatner's Tek War books for the adventures of a futuristic PI Jake Cardigan.
Rating: Summary: It is The Best!!! Review: I love listening to this book. It has so much action in it. I hope you enjoy it.
